The Shergar Cup is back at Ascot, and while it's always a cracking watch, let's be honest, most serious punters will be looking elsewhere. That's certainly where I'm heading with my Saturday horse racing tips, as Haydock and Newmarket serve up the sort of quality racing where I think the best betting opportunities are lying in wait.

My latest Saturday horse racing tips offer a strong mix of confidence and value, with the nap Castle Rock the standout play on a cracking afternoon of racing. If you're backing my best bet, don't forget you can also take advantage of a winnings boost with William Hill – I've explained how that works further down.

Horse racing tips today are all priced up by William Hill, one of the best bookmakers in the business, so you know you're getting odds from a firm I trust week in, week out.

Saturday Horse Racing Tips: My Best Bet of the Day

Castle Rock – 3:40 Newmarket

My horse racing nap of the day is Castle Rock, and I think Charlie Appleby has found a lovely opportunity to get this smart colt back in the winner’s enclosure. This seven-furlong Class 2 handicap on Newmarket's July Course should suit him perfectly, especially on quick ground, and Appleby tends to treat this place like his own back garden.

The opposition is solid enough, but I keep coming back to what Castle Rock achieved at the back end of last season. He won twice with plenty in hand, beating rivals who have gone on to earn much higher official ratings, so an opening handicap mark of just 89 looks extremely generous. To me, he's very well treated and looks the type who could make a mockery of that mark before climbing the ladder.

Appleby is in excellent form, he's more than capable of readying one after a break, and I'd be disappointed if this isn't just the first step towards much bigger races later in the season.

The bookmakers aren't giving much away on the price, which tells its own story, but if you're backing Castle Rock with William Hill, you can use their Daily Racing Winnings Boost to squeeze a bit more value out of the odds.

Why I’m backing Castle Rock

  • List Icon

Won his last two, but is very well treated at the weights

  • List Icon

Ground, and especially the course, are perfect

  • List Icon

Trainer Charlie Appleby is in excellent form

Boost Your Odds with William Hill

William Hill's Daily Racing Winnings Boost doesn't offer a fixed percentage increase. Instead, the enhanced odds vary depending on the selection and original price, with the exact boosted odds displayed in your bet slip before you place your bet. Make sure you jump on that one with the Newmarket nap.

Newmarket Racing Tips: My Next Best Bet

Graceful Song – 1:55 Newmarket

The Sweet Solera Stakes has a habit of producing top-class fillies. Fallen Angel landed it three years ago before going on to bigger things (more on her below), while Charlie Appleby and Godolphin struck last season with Dance To The Music, a Dubawi filly who, like Graceful Song, arrived after winning on her debut.

There are some smart Royal Ascot performers in opposition, so this won't be easy, but I think Graceful Song is capable of taking another big step forward. She looked very green when scoring over this same July Course three weeks ago, doing plenty wrong before getting the job done, and that experience should have brought her on massively.

I expect a much more polished performance this time around. Appleby's youngsters often improve sharply from their first run, and I can see Graceful Song adding her name to the Sweet Solera roll of honour before climbing into even better company later on.

If you're backing her with William Hill, it's also worth remembering that new customers can claim free bets when signing up, giving you a little extra ammunition for the rest of the day's racing.

Why I’m backing Graceful Song

  • List Icon

Charlie Appleby is going at 42% (and climbing) over the last fortnight

  • List Icon

Made a nice debut, but is bound to come on a ton

  • List Icon

Shares plenty in common with last year’s winner

Haydock Racing Tips: Value Bet for Saturday

Pacific Mission – 3:00 Haydock

My value play of the day is Pacific Mission, and I think the market may be underestimating her simply because she's taking on the star attraction, Fallen Angel.

Haydock returns this week after losing several fixtures because of the damaged turf, with racing kept to the inside track for safety. The ground is officially good, good to firm in places, and with a Going Stick reading of 6.8 plus a dry, breezy forecast, I expect it to ride on the quick side. That's a big positive for my selection.

There's no doubting Fallen Angel's class. She's a Group 1 winner dropping into Listed company without a penalty, which immediately catches the eye. The concern is the ground. Karl Burke has openly been hoping for rain, or at least plenty of watering, after having her ready to run for a couple of months, and she may just find conditions quicker than ideal.

Pacific Mission, on the other hand, has already shown she thrives on fast ground, and the level of form she kept last season as a juvenile is hard to ignore. She was narrowly beaten in a Group 2 by a filly who was then just two lengths behind the still-unbeaten Diamond Necklace in a Group 1. The third horse went on to win a Group 3 and finished third in the Oaks.

She then flew home for second in a Grade 1 at the Breeders' Cup on similarly quick ground. The winner has since finished fifth at Royal Ascot and third behind Blue Bolt in the Group 1 Falmouth Stakes, while the fourth horse has gone on to win at Grade 2 level. That's rock-solid form.

Things haven't quite fallen her way this season. She was sent off favourite at York during the Dante Festival before finishing third on Derby Day when she was the only three-year-old in the field, and the ground turned out much softer than advertised. Back on a sound surface over a mile, I think we'll see a very different filly.

If Fallen Angel tries to make all, there are enough rivals in here to keep her honest. That could tee the race up perfectly for Pacific Mission, who looks the one most likely to come charging home late if the leaders have gone a stride too quick.

Why I’m backing Pacific Mission

  • List Icon

Trainer Andrew Balding is in irresistible form

  • List Icon

Finally, the ground is now perfect for her

  • List Icon

Simply too big a price to turn down with her form

Horse Racing Tips FAQs

Castle Rock, in the 3:40 at Newmarket, is my best horse racing bet today.

My NAP of the day is my strongest bet, the one I’m most confident about. The word comes from the card game Napolean, where the “Nap” is the strongest bet you can make.

Sacrificing strike-rate for better long-term value is how you come out on top, rather than backing favourites blindly.

No. I focus on quality, with Saturday horse racing tips appearing here, and selections for other major races appearing in my horse racing previews.
