Irish Champions Festival Ante-Post Betting

Two days, two racecourses and an absolute stack of Group 1 quality – there’s plenty to get stuck into with Irish Champions Festival betting before the final fields are known.

The Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown is the obvious headline act, but the ante-post markets will also give us an early look at several of the major races across Leopardstown and the Curragh. I’ll be checking prices with our best horse racing betting sites to see where the early value might be hiding.

As ever with ante-post betting, getting in early can mean snaffling a bigger price before declarations and the market properly settles. It also means taking the risk that your horse might not run, so I won’t be throwing darts simply because there’s a juicy number attached.

We’re a little early to the party here. Only certain entries have been published and there are no ante-post markets to attack just yet, but that should start changing once the Ebor Festival at York is safely in the rear-view mirror.

We can already make a few educated guesses about some of the likely stars, particularly given the usual strength Aidan O’Brien brings to Ireland’s biggest weekend. Once Irish Champion Stakes betting opens, I’ll be digging through the prices to see whether the obvious Ballydoyle contenders deserve their place at the head of the market and, more importantly, whether anything has been underestimated.

Day one at Leopardstown features betting on the Champions Juvenile Stakes, Matron Stakes and Irish Champion Stakes. Attention then switches to the Curragh on Sunday for the Moyglare Stud Stakes, Flying Five Stakes, National Stakes and the Irish St Leger.

There’s no money down yet, then, but plenty worth keeping an eye on.

Irish Champions Festival Day 1 Tips [Saturday] – Irish Champion Stakes Day

We’re still waiting for confirmations, but it doesn’t take Mystic Meg to work out where most of my attention will be on Saturday 12 September. The Irish Champion Stakes is the centrepiece at Leopardstown, and Aidan O’Brien’s Constitution River looks an obvious candidate to play a major role.

The Juddmonte International at York should give us some valuable clues beforehand. I’ll be studying that form closely, although I’d be surprised if Ombudsman subsequently made the trip to Leopardstown.

The really interesting one for me could be Item. Andrew Balding’s three-year-old has the potential to be even better than Constitution River, and if Leopardstown appears on his agenda, I’ll be particularly interested to see what sort of opening price the bookmakers offer. If the ground remains fast, then Blue Bolt will be hard to oppose in the Matron Stakes.

Irish Champions Festival Day 2 Tips [Sunday] – Irish St Leger Day

Sunday takes us to the Curragh, where the Irish St Leger tops another cracking Group 1 card. At this early stage, Scandinavia looks very difficult to oppose. He should be ideally suited by the 1m6f trip and, rather than tying myself in knots trying to get him beaten, I’ll be looking for an each-way angle against him. Dermot Weld’s Purview is one who already interests me on that score.

There are plenty of other races to get excited about. Night Raider ran a cracker in last year’s Flying Five and could return an even better horse, while the National Stakes will help sort out the pecking order among the leading two-year-old colts.

I’ll be watching particularly closely for Charlie Appleby’s representative given his excellent record in the race. Al Hudaiba, Inner City Blues, Jassas and, especially, Desert Castle would all be fascinating candidates if sent across from Newmarket.

Irish Champion Stakes Betting – Facts, Stats & Key Insights

I’m always wary of treating racing trends as gospel. What happened five or ten years ago won’t make this year’s favourite run any faster, but that doesn’t mean the history should be chucked in the bin either. It’s another useful weapon to have in the armoury.

The table below breaks down the last 10 Irish Champion Stakes winners and some of the key facts behind them. I’m particularly interested in the relationship between market position and ground conditions. This has generally been a race in which fancied horses perform extremely well, so do softer conditions make it easier for a surprise result to sneak through? Recent wider trends certainly underline just how strong the leading market contenders have been.

I’ll be looking for those correlations rather than forcing a trend where there isn’t one. The stats are interesting in their own right, but anything genuinely useful could ultimately find its way into my Irish Champions Festival betting tips.

What the Stats Tell Us

Dealing with the anomalies first. Roaring Lion was known as a true iron horse who could handle plenty of racing. Away from him, it seems that if a three-year-old is to win it, and plenty have, they need to be more lightly raced.

Two of the three older winners in this list had plenty of runs that year, while the younger horses tend to need only three to four to remain fresh enough. As for the only non-Group 1 winner, Economics, he was a true star which is expressed in his price – 7/4 favourite.

Decorated Knight (25/1) was a genuine surprise, while Magical was a very smart filly who was getting weight from the colts. Without them, this list would be full of three-year-olds, likely to be already Group 1 winners.

Other patterns on show include:

So, on good ground or faster, a really hot, Group 1-winning three-year-old turning up will be hard to ignore if they finished first or second last time out and haven’t been overworked in 2026. Irish Champions Festival betting may be built around this.

Keep an Eye on the Ground

Many horses have been thriving across this very hot summer and loving the fast ground. If it changes before this weekend, or some horses have done enough for the year, you may need a fresh horse and/or one who can handle rain-softened going which may go against the current trends.

Recent Irish Champions Festival Winners

Across the big juvenile races, the Irish St Leger, and the Irish Champion Stakes, we’ve seen some impressive performances down the years:

2017 – Order Of St George Regains the Leger

Having won the race in 2015, Aidan O’Brien’s Order of St George was beaten by 11/1 shot, Wicklow Brave, in the 2016 renewal before returning a year later to regain the Irish St Leger by nine lengths.

2019 – Pinatubo the Pocket Rocket

Pinatubo was only a little thing, but he was quick. Charlie Appleby’s two-year-old ran the second fastest time ever in the National Stakes in 2019, going on to become champion two-year-old by winning the Dewhurst Stakes.

2021 – Native Blazes the Trail

Charlie Appleby has done well in the Group 1 National Stakes for juveniles, but rarely better than in 2021 when his Native Trail was outstanding. He went on to win the Dewhurst Stakes, and later the Irish 2000 Guineas.

2024 – Kyprios Does an Order Of St George

Kyprios, another Aidan O’Brien charge, took the 2022 Irish St Leger, but was injured in 2023. In ’24, he returned and regained the big prize at the Curragh to emulate one of the stable’s greatest.

2024 – One for Britain as Economics’ Run Counts

After seven wins in a row for Britain and France from 2012 to 2018, William Haggas’ Economics completed an unbeaten season by becoming the first non-Irish winner of the Champion Stakes for six years. Every other winner since 2010 has been trained by Aidan O’Brien, who has also won 13 of the last 25 renewals.
