Vuelta a España 2020 Betting Tips & Predictions

Richard Carapaz is a favourite at odds of 4/1 at William Hill. His form has been improving with each race, making him a likely winner, while 888sport is offering odds of 5 on Enric Mas.

Primoz Roglic is the current holder of the Vuelta a España, and the odds-on favourite to repeat the feat with odds of 13/20 at Unibet. The Slovenian has been exceptional the last two seasons and is the man to beat at the Vuelta. He finished in second place at the 2020 Tour de France and skipped the Giro D’Italia this year to concentrate on defending his Vuelta title.

Tom Dumoulin is another favourite at odds of 28/1 at Unibet. He is hoping to claim his second Grand Tour title after winning the 2017 Giro D’Italia. His best performance during the previous two years was a fourth-place finish at the Tirreno–Adriatico 2019. Apart from that, he hasn’t won a race. However, he managed a seventh-place finish at Tour de France 2020.

Chris Froome has been a shadow of himself since his injury setbacks. They prevented him from scaling similar heights as 2018. Despite not achieving success in 2019, Froome enters the Vuelta as a successful competitor, and shouldn't be discounted. He has four Tour de France victories to his name and a long list of impressive accomplishments. He comes in at odds of 425/1 at Bet356.

Popular Vuelta a España Betting Markets

Cycling is becoming increasingly popular, gaining followers and fans with every high profile tour. The Vuelta a España 2020 is especially ripe for betting, offering typical bet types available at most online bookies that provide cycling betting markets. Here are the most popular bet types for Vuelta a España:

Betting on the Outright Winner

Betting on the outright winner of the Vuelta a España is a straightforward betting market that many punters enjoy, and involves betting on the overall winner of the tournament. The odds are typically displayed at online bookmakers offering cycling betting.

Betting on The Stage Winner

The 18 stages at the Vuelta a España serve up betting options for each one. You can pick a cyclist for each stage with different odds, or select other cyclists instead of sticking to just one.

The Cyclist’s Nationality

Betting on the cyclist’s nationality as the tournament winner is another popular Vuelta a España betting market. You should select a nationality for the outright winner of the Vuelta a España, whether a local Spanish, British, French, or Italian cyclist.

Betting on a Top Three, or Top Ten Finish

A top ten, or top-three finish is a bit similar to each-way betting, as in other sports. You are essentially wagering on a particular cyclist to end the tour in the top ten or top three.

Betting on Head-to-Head Performances

Head-to-Head betting is also called matched betting. This bet type pits one cyclist against another, requiring you to predict who will finish better placed in a particular stage or the whole race.

Betting on the Points Winner

Betting on the Points Winner is a stake on who will eventually win the Green or Points Jersey. They are given to the cyclist who accumulates the most points in the intermediate sprints and different stage finishes.

Tournament Structure for the Vuelta a España

For the first time since 1985, the Vuelta a España will not be 21 stages; instead, it will be reduced to 18 stages. The 2020 edition of the Vuelta a España consists of 22 cycling teams, with all nineteen UCI World Teams entitled to enter the race. Additionally, three second-tier UCI Professional Continental teams are invited to the event. Apart from the cancelled stages, the Vuelta a España 2020 will follow the original route, setting off from the town of Irún on the 20th of October. The race then dips into France for a Tourmalet-finish with three mountainous weeks of cycling before finishing, reaching Madrid on the 8th November.

While the race route changes every year, it remained unchanged during the last two time trials through the Pyrenees, ending up in Madrid for the finish. The Vuelta a España usually takes 21 days to complete over 23 days, with two inactive days for rest. Each stage is timed and compounded together for the final points tally, and the cyclist who manages to achieve the lowest aggregate time wins the race, receiving the prestigious red jersey. While the classification attracts the most attention, other contests within the Vuelta are popular as well, such as the classification points for sprinters, mountain climbers, all-round cyclists, and the final classification of the team.

History of the Vuelta a España

The first edition of the Vuelta a España took place in 1935, when fifty men took part in the first Tour of Spain in Madrid. The participants used heavy bikes and fixed their breakdowns with tools and patches. Belgian cyclist Gustaaf Deloor won the first edition which covered 3,425 kilometres started on the 29th May till the 15th with fourteen endless stages, with ten of them more than 250km. The race was interrupted during the Spanish civil war, and in 1941 when the Second World War limited foreign participation.

The Vuelta a España has created many cycling myths along the way, such as Jan Janssen, Ocaña, Merkx, Pedro Delgado, Tony Rominger, Abrahan Olano, Alejandro Valverde and Alberto Contador. Other notable competitors include Bahamontes and Indurain, who, despite not winning, have shown their qualities and have managed to be in the podium. The Vuelta is one of the three Grand Cycling Tours. The other two races are the Tour de France and the Giro d'Italia.

The race covers approximately 3,500 kilometres, although it has varied slightly; the route passes through Spain and surrounding countries in Europe, but it always ends in Madrid. It has day-long segments or stages, and individual finishing times are totalled up for each step, determining the overall winner. Spanish cyclists hold the record for the most wins with 23 cyclists winning 29 Vueltas collectively. The French are next with nine wins, and the Belgians are in third place with seven wins between them.
