La Vuelta Betting Tips

We have been analysing the performance of the top riders and the top teams over the season to bring you a few La Vuelta betting tips. We will update these in detail once the odds are out and the riders are confirmed.

However, several top riders, who regularly target this race, have caught our eye, which enables us to bring you some early La Vuelta tips.

Primoz Roglic (UCI WorldTeam) to win

2024 winner Primož Roglič, of UCI WorldTeam Red Bull, has four wins and a third-place finish to his name, in this event, in the last six years. The Spanish hills and roads seem to suit him. He can cope with the heat, and he is the man to beat.

Info box icon

Enric Mas (Movistar) a great each way bet

Enric Mas, of Movistar, has not finished outside the top six of La Vuelta since placing 17th on his debut, in 2017. He has three second places and a third-place finish to his name and we even feel that he can go one better. The Majorca native seems to relish his home country’s tour and, having recently turned 30, is at an age where endurance athletes often peak. We feel that he can claim that elusive victory this year. Nonetheless, given the quality and consistency of Roglič and the other world class names in the field, we wouldn’t rule out a good each way bet.

Adam Yates (UCI WorldTeam): Flying the flag for Britain

If you are looking to back a British rider, then Adam Yates could be the man to go for. Yates finished fourth in La Vuelta in 2021 and was 12th in 2024. He may be worth betting on for a top ten finish.

La Vuelta a España Favourites

The early favourites for the Vuelta de España 2025 include the 2024 winner Primož Roglič of UCI WorldTeam Red Bull. The 35-year-old has racked up four wins and a third place in the last six years at the Vuelta. With a win in the Volta a Catalunya under his belt this year, he will take some beating.

Jonas Vingegaard, runner-up in 2023, is another strong contender. The two-time Tour de France winner will go into this event looking for his third Grand Tour win.

Enric Mas of Movistar will be there or thereabouts. He has shown great consistency in this event and would clearly love to top the podium on his home Tour.

La Vuelta a España Route

La Vuelta will take place over 3151 kilometres, split into 21 stages. Odds will be released for each stage closer to the time. It will be broken down into five flat stages, a hilly stage, seven medium mountain stages, six mountain stages, one individual time trial, a team time trial, and two rest days.

This year, the race will have stages in Italy and France, as well as Spain. It starts on August 21, with a flat stage in Turin, Italy, and ends on September 14, in the Spanish capital, Madrid.

There are a whole host of cycling betting markets available for La Vuelta. Throughout the three weeks of the tour, there is plenty of flexibility and variety. Obviously, you can bet on the outright winner and on stage winners, but the key point is to look for the value. We have highlighted the main betting markets.

Outright Winner Betting (Red Jersey)

Betting on the outright winner of the Vuelta a España is a straightforward market, where you simply bet on the General Classification winner, otherwise known as the Red Jersey winner. You can also get each-way odds on this, splitting the bet between a win and a place.

Outright Winner Without Primoz Roglic

Such has been Roglic’s dominance, that there are markets for the outright winner with Roglic excluded.

Stage Winner Betting

You can bet on the winner of each stage of Vuelta a España. Simply select who you think will win the stage on the day you are placing your wager. Research the cyclist’s strengths and weaknesses and compare these with the type of stage to maximise your chances of a successful bet. Shorter, flatter stages will favour sprinters, while the mountain stages will favour climbers. Only a select number of riders will have the skill set to excel on each stage.

Points Classification (Green Jersey)

Points Classifications are about the speed merchants and sprinters. Instead of a yellow jersey, they are chasing green, and it’s for the rider who accumulates the most points from the high stage finishes and intermediate sprints. Mark Cavendish has excelled in these stages in the recent past.

Nationality Betting

Betting on the winner's nationality is another popular Vuelta a España betting market. Here, you simply select a nationality for the outright winner of the Vuelta a España.

King of the Mountains (Polka Dot Jersey)

The King of the Mountains (KOM) Classification goes to the strongest climber, who earns the polka dot jersey. This market is the most open of the three jersey chases, as it favours hill specialists and those who can time their effort well, not necessarily the challengers for the overall title or the sprinters.

Top Three, or Top Ten Finish Betting

A top ten, or top three finish is similar to each-way betting. You are essentially wagering on a particular cyclist to end the tour in the top ten or top three.

Team betting

You can also bet on the team competition. Research how each team, and their individual riders, have performed over the season and investigate their strengths and weaknesses ahead of making your picks. There will be 22 teams riding the 2024 Vuelta a España, including all 18 WorldTour teams and four second-tier ProTeams. Full details are yet to be confirmed.

Head-to-Head (Match Bets)

Picking a winner for the General Classification or for a stage is not easy, given the number and quality of riders. You can narrow your bet down to two or three cyclists to finish highest across a stage. The bookies will tend to pit evenly matched riders against each other, so the odds will often be around evens. To get a better price, you might want to combine multiple head-to-head bets to create an acca, which would potentially give a higher payout.

bet365: Range of markets, competitive odds, livestreaming and great cycling coverage.

Chris - bet365 is an excellent bookmaker and provides great coverage of all major cycling events, including La Vuelta. They have competitive odds and a great range of markets. If you are signing up with bet365 for your La Vuelta wagers, it is worth remembering that you can use the free bets from the welcome offer to wager on the event.

How to Bet on La Vuelta a España

You have a great range of markets to choose from when betting on La Vuelta, with any of the best betting sites in the UK featuring the event. As with any sport, research is crucial if you want to maximise your chances of success.

You need to analyse the individual riders, check out how they have performed this season and research past seasons to see how they look and when they come to a peak.

When betting on stages, you need to consider the demands being placed on the cyclists on that day and compare it with their skill set. You need to look at the terrain and the distance before deciding who will be the main contenders.

Cycling is also one of the best sports for in-play betting. In the early phases of each stage, there are a lot of tactics and strategies, and you can watch the action, react to breakaways and crashes, and react to what is happening. Things can change quickly when a fancied rider suffers fatigue and fades from contention, and if you react quickly, you can find more value. You can also use live betting to back one of the leaders to hedge your bets if your initial pick is struggling.

We will provide more information on this closer to the event, once the field is confirmed and the odds are out.

La Vuelta a España Key Facts & Stats

We have compiled a few key statistics to give you some background information and to help you with your research.

What Is the Format for La Vuelta a España 2025?

The Vuelta a España is one of cycling’s three Grand Tours. First organised in 1935, La Vuelta has taken place every year since 1955.

It is made up of 21 stages and takes place over 23 days, with the competitors afforded two rest days. Each stage is timed and compounded together for the final points tally. The cyclist who manages to achieve the lowest aggregate time wins the race and receives the prestigious red jersey.

While the General Classification is the main focus, other contests aimed at sprinters and hill specialists are also popular, along with the team race.

La Vuelta often goes into Italy and France, apart from Spain. This year’s edition starts on Italian soil and has stages in France and Andorra. The race usually finishes in the Spanish capital, Madrid.

When Will the Lineup for La Vuelta a España Be Defined?

Neither the line-up for La Vuelta or the odds are confirmed at the time of writing. Confirmation is likely to come after the Tour de France, as teams and riders will be monitoring recovery and assessing their priorities for the remainder of the season.
