History of the Tour de France
The first Tour de France took place in 1903, being the brainchild of sports journalists Henri Desgrange and George Lefèvre in an effort to improve circulation of their sports newspaper. Back then, the race was held over six stages, covering 2428 km as the riders left Paris for Lyon and biking down to Marseille, Toulouse, Bordeaux and Nantes before returning to Paris.
Maurice Garin won that first Tour in front of 20,000 Parisians, and L’Auto’s circulation quadrupled. While that inaugural race was a success, the following (second) edition was a disaster, as cheats began catching trains and sabotaging each other’s bicycles. Over the next few years, however, the event grew into something special as mountain stages were added and the route doubled in length.
The famous yellow jersey that is awarded to the winners of the Tour de France was introduced by Desgrange in 1919, with the colour being the same as that of the paper that he produced – it also allowed roadside spectators to identify the leading cyclists more easily. Eugene Christophe was the first person to wear the yellow jersey and did so on 18th July 1919.
