How else could they have priced things so wrong? The good news is, we haven’t forgotten what great value Premier League acca tips look like. Bet 1: Toy Guns vs Goal Machine: Back City Over 3.5 Goals Against Tottenham
Spurs’ 3-0 win over Burnley seems to have convinced the bookies they’ve turned a corner after a dismal season and that bruising Super Cup defeat to PSG. Frankly, we’re not buying it. Their transfer business has been underwhelming, missing out on three top targets, with Eberechi Eze’s snub being particularly stinging. And with Son Heung-min trading tea cakes for Tinsletown and Dejan Kulusevski sidelined through injury, their attack looks more like it’s armed with water pistols than live rounds.
As for that “triumphant” opening-day victory… well, let’s be honest: it was Burnley. No disrespect to the Clarets, who’ve done brilliantly to climb back into the top flight, but there’s a reason they’ve favourites to crash back down. They’ve not recruited as well as Sunderland, and most promoted sides struggle to bridge the gap. 3-0 against them hardly screams “ready for Man City.”
City, meanwhile, have had their working boots on. Even with the uncertainties of the transfer market and a surprise stumble against Al-Hilal at the Club World Cup, they’ve been frighteningly sharp; at least three goals in each of their last five, and four or more in three of them. Their 4-0 mauling of Wolves told its own story. Tijjani Reinjders put on an all-timer Premier League debut with a goal, assist and some beautiful passing that led towards the opener. While Haaland continues to roll on like the inevitable goal-machine he is.
All told, City look every inch the title contenders once again. Honestly, anything beyond evens on Over 3.5 Team Goals feels like a steal, and at 10/3 (23.1% implied probability) you’re looking at a low-risk, high-value bet that’s truly rare in its naivety.
Bet 2: Black Cats Have the Bite: Burnley to Be Nipped 1-0
In last year’s Championship, Burnley were stalemate artists, locking their net down like Fort Knox. In fact, on only 16 sweet occasions did opponents manage to steal away with some goal-scoring gold.
But things are different now. That 3-0 defeat to Spurs showed that the old “batten down the hatches” approach won’t hold up as well in the Premier League. Sunderland, meanwhile, announced their return in style by whacking The Hammers with a trio of goals of their own. It was such a mauling that you’ll want to check out the top picks on West Ham vs Chelsea from our resident expert Jonathan Askew to find any value.
As for Burnley? Well, despite bringing in nine new faces, they’ve largely stuck to their tried-and-tested style: tight, conservative, and as frustrating as fishing a soggy biscuit out of your brew. The effectiveness of that strategy really depends on the competition, and we think the Black Cats have just enough to take a bite out of The Claret’s defences.
With 11 new signings sharpening their teeth and a few seasoned heads stepping up, there’s plenty of positives for Sunderland. Alderete’s peach of a cross for Mayenda and Ballard’s standout display last week say it all.
So yes, Burnley will be tough to crack, but Sunderland look good enough to find at least one way through. And given the odds on them nicking a 1-0 win sit at 17/2 – that’s just over a 10% implied chance – we think the bookies have misjudged this one badly. We’d price it at about 2/1. By our maths, they’re out by more than 200%. Smells like value to us.
Bet 3: Gunners Locked, Leeds Not Loaded: Arsenal to Win to Nil (1/1)
The bookies clearly aren’t rating Leeds United here. And, to be fair, we can see why. Leeds have yo-yoed between the Premier League and the Championship so often since the turn of the millennium that Elland Road risks a diagnosis of whiplash if they’re relegated again.
Arsenal, meanwhile, are firing on all cylinders. They made the transfer window look Eze (sorry Spurs, we couldn’t resist) and then danced past a determined Manchester United at Old Trafford. Most impressive of all was their back line. The Red Devils rattled off 20 shots, the last time they managed that many against Arsenal in August 2011, they scored 11. This time? Nothing.
Which brings us back to Leeds. The Gunners simply look to have too much artillery for them to handle. If a much-improved Manchester United couldn’t find a way through, Leeds’ chances look slim to none, especially as they’re unlikely to begifted another controversial penalty this time around.
All told, we’d rate Arsenal to Win to Nil at around a 70–80% probability. The bookies, however, have it down as a coin toss. Which means, for us, it’s a fantastic chance to double your money.
