Steven Gerrard will not make a return to Ibrox as the next Rangers manager following Russell Martin’s exit on 5 October. The former Liverpool and England midfielder held talks with the club on Thursday and Friday, but decided that the timing wasn’t quite right and confirmed that he was no longer part of the recruitment process.
The bookies have been quick to act on the news and now have Danny Röhl as the favourite to take the job. The former Sheffield Wednesday manager was initially priced at 11/2 while talks were ongoing with Gerrard. However, on Sunday morning, he shortened to 4/5 with bet365 and is the frontrunner to take charge.

Danny Röhl – 4/5 with bet365
When Danny Röhl took charge of Sheffield Wednesday in October 2023, he became the youngest manager in the Football League at 34. His time at Hillsborough was, ultimately, a success, guiding the Owls to Championship survival in his first season and a mid-table finish in his second.
Off-field issues have plagued the club since then, with a genuine threat of administration and ongoing legal battles surrounding the payment of staff and player wages. Röhl left the club by mutual consent in July 2025.
Prior to Russell Martin securing the Rangers job in June 2025, the board had previously held talks with Röhl about securing the German’s services. Since Gerrard has declared himself out of a return to Ibrox, he’s now the bookies' favourite at 4/5 to finally land a dream role for this aspiring, young manager.
Kevin Muscat – 6/1 with bet365
An alternative to Röhl, whose odds have also shortened in the market on Sunday morning, is Kevin Muscat. The Australian is currently plying his trade in the Chinese Super League as manager of Shanghai Port, but it’s believed he would be open to the challenges presented at Rangers.
As a former player, Muscat won the Scottish Premier League, Scottish Cup and Scottish League Cup in his only season in Glasgow, but was very much a fan favourite for his fiery, no-nonsense approach to the game.
At 6/1, he’s an outsider to become the next Rangers manager, but if the move for Röhl does fall through, he’s very much the next cab off the rank, and could still represent value even if consensus is that Röhl will be offered the job in the coming days.
