After finishing runners-up to Columbia in Group K Portugal face Croatia in the last 32. It promises to be an interesting clash, but with both sides failing to click in the attacking third during the group stage, a high scoring encounter is not on the cards. This is what my 4/1 bet builder is based around.

Match Result: Portugal to Win
Portugal have a number of players who may be past their peak and possibly don’t have the depth that they had a few years ago. Despite being one of the best players in the history of the game, 41-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo starting upfront underlines this point. However, Croatia are also an aging side with another all-time great, Luka Modric, starting in midfield at the age of 40. Portugal have greater depth and more creativity. I back them to win and World Cup betting odds of 4/5 for them to complete the job in 90 minutes represents decent value.
Under 2.5 Goals
If you take out Portugal’s 5-0 win against Uzbekistan neither side have gone goal crazy lately. Portugal recorded xG’s of 0.7 against Columbia and 0.82 against DR Congo, only scoring once in those two matches. Croatia managed to score twice against England while shipping four, however, their xG was only 0.71. Despite beating Ghana 2-1 their xG was only 0.42.
Our Kickform stats show that both teams were shot shy in the group stages. Portugal are ranked 20th for total shots with an average of 12.22, with an average of 4.00 on target per match. Croatia are ranked 40th with an average of 8.00 with an average of 3.67 on target. It looks like being a tight game where one goal might just be enough to win it.
Under 9.5 Corners
Staying with the theme of shots, chances and goals being at a premium, I am expecting a fairly low corner count. The conditions have played a part in relatively few corners across the tournament, but Portugal and Croatia are both near the bottom of the table when it comes to corners won. Portugal have only managed 10 corners in their three group games, while Croatia are ranked 43rd from the 48 teams who started the tournament with seven corners in their three matches. All of Portugal’s group games saw less than 10 flag kicks, while under 9.5 corners came up in all but one of Croatia’s games. I am confident of under 9.5 corners in this one.
