Portugal’s controversial last gasp win over Croatia has set up arguably the matchup of the World Cup so far, a round of 16 Iberian derby against Spain. La Roja turned on the style to sweep Austria aside in their most impressive display of the tournament, underlining their status as one of the favourites. It is certainly one to look forward to, and I’ll be watching it in the company of a tasty 16/5 betslip for a three-leg bet builder.

Spain to Qualify
While Portugal are a good team, Spain really hit their stride against a well organised Austria to come away with a convincing 3-0 victory. Luis de la Fuente’s side kept the ball well but crucially had a directness to their play. They frequently won the ball back rapidly in Austria’s defensive third and Lamine Yamal’s exciting dribbling, Pedri’s intelligent probing and Mikel Oyarzabal’s cool finishing were standout features in a quality performance. Portugal represent a stiffer test, however, I think La Roja will have too much for them. Kickform give Spain a 49% chance of winning with a 21% chance of a draw. They may not get it done inside 90 minutes but I’m backing Spain to go through.
Over 2.5 Goals
I think there will be goals in this one. If you take out Portugal's win over outsiders Uzbekistan, they struggled to find the net in the group stage. This was rectified to some degree against Croatia with two goals and an xG of 2.18. They have players who, on their day, can cause any defence problems and it wouldn’t surprise me if they managed to breach the Spanish backline.
Spain looked dangerous in the 3-0 win over Austria, and on another day could have scored more. Kickform give a 55% chance of there being three or more goals, making the World Cup betting odds of 93/100 a worthwhile addition to the bet builder.
Spain Corners: Over 4.5
Spain win a lot of corners. They have averaged eight per game during the tournament and have won no fewer than six. Portugal have conceded an average of four corners per match, with this figure being brought down due to giving away two flag kicks against Uzbekistan. Columbia and Croatia both won five corners against Roberto Martinez’s side, and I am very confident that Spain will match or better this total.
