Favourites France swept Sweden aside in the round of 32 to set up a last 16 tie with Paraguay who disposed of Germany. Didier Deschamps’ side are gaining momentum while La Albirroja have recovered from a demoralising 4-1 defeat to the USA in their opener to produce three resilient performances to reach the last 16. It promises to be an interesting matchup of styles as Paraguay will surely try to frustrate the French and I’ll be settling down to watch this on Saturday night alongside a betslip for a 5/1 bet builder, boosted to 13/2 with 10bet.

Full-Time Result: France

I acknowledge that the World Cup betting odds for this one alone are not great, but it helps boost the bet builder. I also think France will have too much for Paraguay and get the job done without needing extra time or penalties. Paraguay deserve huge credit for the way they have turned their World Cup around after a poor opener against the USA. Clean sheets against Australia and Turkey in the group stage and grinding out a 1-1 draw with Germany before winning on penalties are creditable achievements. But with respect, this French side are on a different level to their previous opponents, and I back Les Bleus to have enough guile to break Paraguay down.

Over 2.5 Goals

While Paraguay have managed to grind out results in low-scoring matches, I think that France, who had an xG of 3.17 against Sweden, will breach their backline at least twice. Our Kickform stats show that 100% of France’s matches at this tournament have exceeded 2.5 goals. In addition, when Paraguay came unstuck against the USA, the match featured five goals. To Paraguay’s credit, they have found the net in six of their last seven fixtures, while the French have kept only two clean sheets in their last eight internationals. So, it wouldn’t surprise me if Gustavo Alfaro’s side got on the scoresheet. Expect a minimum of three goals in this one.

Over 9.5 Corners

It can be argued that the conditions are contributing to a lower number of corners in this World Cup, however, our Kickform stats show that France are averaging six flag kicks per match. In their last match against Germany, Paraguay conceded 16 corners and won six. 50% of both sides’ matches in this tournament have seen the corner count hit double figures. France can attack from both flanks and down the middle and they are not shy of having a shot from outside the box. Paraguay’s two central defenders were outstanding against Germany, and they are not afraid to put the ball out into touch or out for a corner to reset. This all adds up to over 9.5 corners in my book.

Player to Score Anytime: Michael Olise

While Kylian Mbappe has grabbed the headlines, Michael Olise has been a major factor in France’s impressive tournament to date. Moved inside after Dechamps’ side had struggled to find their stride in the first half against Senegal, the Bayern Munich forward has linked the play superbly has created a number of chances. Olise has five assists, but despite having five shots on target from 14 attempts, he is yet to score. Given that he scored 15 goals in the Bundesliga last season at a rate of 0.58 per 90 minutes and that he has seven goals in 21 appearances for France, he is due a goal. I am tipping him to be on target against Paraguay.
