Buoyed by an excellent 4-1 win over Paraguay the United States will go into their second Group D match against Australia in confident mood. However, the Aussies also impressed in their 2-0 win over Turkey and, after proving to be a thorn in the side of some of the fancied teams four years ago, they will be aiming to upset the odds again in this one. It should be an interesting match, and I’ve unearthed three great wagers to make a tasty 5/1 bet builder.

Match Result: USA
The win over Paraguay was the United States’ joint biggest victory in the World Cup Finals. They racked up two 3-0 wins in the first World Cup in 1930, and this was their first victory by a three-goal margin since then. Spearheaded by Floarin Balogun, who bagged a brace, Mauricio Pochettino's side looked full of goals against Paraguay. It can be argued that their opponents were poor, but they still had to be beaten, and there are signs that this US team could be about to move beyond the hype and prove themselves to be a genuinely competitive side.
While eight members of the squad currently ply their trade in the MLS, 17 play in Europe’s top five leagues. It may be premature to talk about them as potential winners or even semi-finalists, but they are clearly a very capable team with a coach in Pochettino who is getting the best out of them tactically.
Australia will not be a pushover, though, and I expect the Americans to face a tougher challenge than in their opener. The Socceroos shocked Turkey in their first Group D match and after reaching the knockout stages of the 2022 World Cup they will again be looking to upset the established order. Kickform are backing the United States to win and I agree. It may not be comfortable, but they will have too much for the Aussies.
BTTS: Yes
I am backing there to be goals at both ends. Australia are decent at the back and kept a clean sheet against the Turks despite having less than 30% possession and conceding 30 shots on goal. I don’t see them keeping the United States out, though. Pochettino’s side looked dangerous in attack and have only failed to score once in their last five matches. In addition to hitting four against Paraguay, they have recently scored three against Senegal and two against Belgium.
Australia had an xG of only 0.77 against Turkey but were clinical enough to come away with two goals. They also have the considerable aerial presence of Harry Souttar at set-pieces. The US have not kept a clean sheet since September 2025 and have shipped nine goals in their last five games. Conceding against Paraguay despite being so dominant highlights their tendency to give away goals. The World Cup odds at Betfred are evens for BTTS, which I think is great value.
Harry Souttar 1+ Shots
Harry Souttar is back in the Australian line up after enduring a torrid time with injuries. Souttar missed virtually the whole of the 2025/26 season with a ruptured Achilles tendon. The central defender is a key man at the back for the Socceroos and at 6 ft 6 is also a massive offensive threat from free-kicks and corners. Souttar has managed a shot in each of his last two international matches. Because of injury he only made two Championship appearances for Leicester City last season, however, he managed two shots in that time. I am backing him to cause the USA problems from set-pieces and to register at least one shot.
