Ange Postecoglou finally gave the Tottenham cleaning staff a reason to dust the trophy cabinet, winning their first piece of silverware in 17 years. But the issues with Tottenham run much deeper, and Ange could take the fall for it all.

Ange Postecoglou to be Sacked

The odds aren’t looking great for Ange, with several candidates being tipped to take his job if he were to lose it this summer. Here’s who BetVictor is backing to be the next Tottenham manager:

Xavi Hernandez4/1
Mauricio Pochettino5/1
Thomas Frank6/1
Scott Parker6/1
Francesco Farioli8/1
Robert De Zerbi10/1
Andoni Iraola10/1

The next Spurs manager odds are still relatively high, but it could be a great opportunity to get ahead of the curve.

Here’s what we think of the favourites:

  • List Icon

Oliver Glasner's stock is at an all-time high after winning the FA Cup with Crystal Palace, so a move to a ‘bigger club’ is definitely in the books. Tottenham will be keen to adopt his tactical style, which shows a stable and clear direction.

  • List Icon

Xavi Hernandes has been out of work since getting the sack at Barca, his ability to guide a transitioning Barca team to a La Liga title will be something Tottenham want to emulate in the 25/26 Premier League season.

  • List Icon

Mauricio Pochettino is loved at Tottenham, building them up to be a competitive team and reaching a Champions League final. He’s also having a terrible time in the States, and a move back into club football could be just what he needs.

Why Spurs Would Sack Ange

So, after 17 years of ridicule and mockery, a competent manager finally comes along and wins a trophy for your club, and there are calls for him to be sacked. You might be thinking, only at Tottenham.

But can you blame them? Tottenham are stuck down in 17th place with just 38 points this season. Even if they beat Brighton, which seems unlikely, they would have endured their worst campaign in Premier League history.

There are two seasons in the 21st century where that points tally would see them get relegated, which is wild for a supposed ‘Big 6 Club’.

Postecoglou stated in January that he’ll be placing all his eggs in the Europa League basket, and that did pay off, but even with that, some of the results are inexcusable.

Tottenham lost 5-1 to Liverpool, 2-1 to relegated Leicester, 4-2 to Wolves, and lost 2-1 to relegated Ipswich Town.

Against the big 6 clubs, they lost 7 and won 3, losing both legs against Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool. 2 of the 3 wins came against an equally shocking Manchester United.

We cannot stress enough how badly Postecoglou’s season has been, and if he had lost the Europa League, he would have already been sacked by now.

Why Spurs Would Keep Ange

“I always win in my second season.” Ange delivered the goods. That’s the main reason why he hasn’t been sacked yet, and why he may manage to save his job.

In fairness, Tottenham have had one of the worst injury records in recent memory, with 5 players missing over half their league games, and 7 missing more than 10. Only 5 players have not been sidelined through injury at least once.

When fully fit, Tottenham have looked like a decent outfit, and if they can keep their best players and make a few decent signings, Ange has already proven to be a good manager.

The Tottenham manager's first season was brilliant. Ange won the first three Manager of the Month awards in a row and was unlucky not to get into the Champions League that season.

Looking further back in Ange’s managerial career, unlike Tottenham, he’s a serial winner. He’s won 15 trophies in 27 years.

Another key fact is that Ange has the backing of the dressing room. After last night’s win, Maddison and Reguilon revealed a banner about Ange and his famous title-winning quote.

Brennan Johnson even stated that he was “looking forward to his interview” expecting a mic drop moment from the ex-Celtic boss. Clearly showing his fondness for the coach.

The future is unclear for the big Australian, and we might see a new face at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Betting on it early could get you the best value.

Either way, Ange Postecoglou’s name is written in the history books, both for the highs and the lows.
