News of Danny Röhl’s departure from Hillsborough on Tuesday hardly came as a massive surprise, given talks had been ongoing about his future since the end of the 2024/25 season. It now leaves The Owls barely a fortnight from the start of a new campaign and without a manager.

Life as a Wednesday fan is turbulent at the moment, as they are serving a triple transfer embargo, are six weeks late with player wages, and now face a council prohibition notice on their depleting North Stand.
As a result, the bookies have them at an ominous 4/11 to be relegated from the Championship.
Whoever does take the hot seat will face an almighty challenge to keep them afloat, let alone in the league. This is a project that will appeal to few, and as the next Sheffield Wednesday manager odds suggest, there’s not a vast array of talent that are hopeful of landing the role.
There is, however, a little bit of light at the end of the tunnel for Wednesday. Following the departures of Anthony Musaba to Samsunspor and Djeidi Gassama to Rangers, the club are no longer actively willing to sell.
On top of this, talks are ongoing about owner Dejphon Chansiri’s sale of the club, with his asking price recently dropping from £150 million to £100 million as he attempts to lure a buyer.
But as of now, the club must act fast to replace Röhl, which is their number one priority.

Gary O’Neil | 11% |
Michael Carrick | 11% |
Steve Cooper | 11% |
Henrik Pedersen Favourite for the Hoot Seat
Henrik Pedersen was initially brought in to work alongside Danny Röhl and has stayed on following his departure. The Dane has worked as a youth development specialist in the Red Bull network, with senior spells at HB Køge, Eintracht Braunschweig, Strømsgodset and Vendsyssel, before joining Röhl at Wednesday.
He’s a familiar face who knows the squad and, given the club’s current financial blight, will be the cheapest option for the current owners to explore.
Last season, the players credited his meticulous approach to set pieces, overseeing 10 goals and a +5 goal difference from dead-ball situations.
It’ll be Pedersen’s first foray into management in England, but we think this move is almost nailed on, and a 60% implied probability has been applied accordingly.
Luke Who’s Talking: Williams Ready with Terminal Ambition
A move for Luke Williams is an interesting budget-friendly option that could be explored by Sheffield Wednesday.
He’s had multiple jobs over the years, but he’s best known for gaining promotion with Notts County in 2022/23. He then got a move to Championship side Swansea but was sacked in February after seven defeats in nine.
Williams as Sheffield Wednesday’s next manager might not be as far-fetched as it seems. He’s got Championship experience, is renowned for bringing on young talent and has maximised loanees in previous roles, vital when clubs are under an embargo.
It was reported in June that he was currently working at Bristol Airport, but a return to the Championship would be too good to turn down.
Hoo Dares Wins: Gary O’Neil Longshot
Former Premier League manager Gary O’Neil would undoubtedly be a dream signing for Wednesday.
He’s had success at Bournemouth, keeping them in the league at an average of 0.92 points per game, and later guided Wolves to an FA Cup quarter-final before a winter collapse and December sacking.
He’s been without work since then, but he knows that it takes time to work in crisis environments and with turbulent boardrooms, so as a firefighter, there are few better in the game.
Money will be an issue. Sheffield Wednesday have very little, and O’Neil is likely going to want top money to make the leap across.
However, news of him getting the Leicester job has died since they appointed Marti Cifuentes, and there aren’t a lot of other options on the table right now.
This would be quite the coup if Wednesday could pull it off, but we feel right now, O’Neil will sit this one out in favour of a bigger, more stable move.
