Bet 1: James Wade to Beat Joe Cullen (2/5)

One of the key attributes needed to win this week is doubling, and they don’t get much better than James Wade in this regard. The Machine has been in imperious form this season, with an incredible doubles percentage of 44%, making him one of the early World Grand Prix betting favourites to win outright in Leicester this week.

He dismantled Cullen 10-3 in the World Matchplay earlier in the season and has won this tournament twice, in 2007 and again in 2010. His odds are short at 2/5, but as part of a wider World Grand Prix acca, he’s a strong fit.

Bet 2: Daryl Gurney to Beat Ross Smith (6/4)

Daryl Gurney beat Ross Smith in the European Tour Event 10 in August, and at 6/4, he is one of the value picks for Round One. He’s another former winner (2017) and is hitting an incredible 45.5% on the doubles in his last 200 legs. Widely regarded as one of the best D16 hitters in the world, and up against an unpredictable Ross Smith, makes this an easy inclusion.

Bet 3: Gerwyn Price to Beat Ryan Searle (4/9)

Gezzy has a voodoo over Ryan Searle. He’s won seven of their last eight meetings and is another former World Grand Prix Champion (2020). The Iceman is doubling at 37.5% for the season, but he increased this to 60% in his most recent televised game with Searle. On his day, he can beat anyone and should be too strong for Searle.

Bet 4: Michael van Gerwen to Beat Dirk van Duijvenbode (4/9)

MVG might not be the player he once was, but you write off a six-time World Grand Prix winner at your absolute peril. He’s beaten Dirk in six of the last eight head-to-heads and loves this double-in, double-out format. He comes into the tournament in good form after winning the 2025 World Series of Darts Finals and has a chance to make it lucky number seven if those doubles keep rolling in.
