Liverpool’s turbulent start to their title defence took an unwanted and unexpected twist on Sunday following their 3-3 draw at Leeds. Club legend, Mohammed Salah, let rip to reporters post-match, sounding how unhappy he was following three straight games where he’d started from the bench.
Salah initially said that he felt Liverpool had “thrown [him] under the bus” and later added that he had “no relationship” with manager Arne Slot.
Things are clearly strained at Anfield, with Liverpool faltering in ninth place, some 10 points behind league leaders Arsenal, having already lost six of their opening 15 games.
Even more surprising were Salah’s comments surrounding his immediate future, stating that he’s invited his family to Anfield for the Brighton game on Saturday, suggesting it may be the Egyptians last home game at the club before he heads off to AFCON.
Arne Slot is expected to address the media on Monday evening ahead of their Champions League game against Inter Milan. Salah’s comments likely won’t have gone down well, and even though he’s trained with the team on Monday morning, he won’t be part of the squad in Italy.
The question that remains is, will Mo Salah leave Liverpool in January or fight for his place?

The odds table assumes that Salah will leave Liverpool before the January transfer window closes. For context, bet365 have him priced at 1/2 to stay past January.
Mo Salah to Join any Saudi Club – 4/5
Noise around Mo Salah's move to the Saudi Pro League has been simmering since 2023. Al-Ittihad tabled a bid worth around £150 million at the time, along with a monster salary in the range of £1 million per week.
It was ultimately rejected, but the rumours have persisted every summer since, with reports in 2024 of a fresh £70 million bid and a potential move before he signed a new deal in 2025.
His basic wage of £400,000 per week at Liverpool means that very few teams in world football could afford Salah. This stumbling block won’t be an issue in Saudi Arabia, which already backs stars like Cristiano Ronaldo to the tune of £200 million per year.
Financially, they can reach levels that European clubs simply won’t or, in most cases, can’t.
From a betting perspective, if he is to leave, taking 4/5 to cover multiple options in Saudi Arabia seems the smart play. Digging down into where he might land is a little trickier.
Al Hilal at 4/1 with bet365 seem an obvious fit. They tabled bids in 2024 and 2025 and acquired his former teammate Darwin Nunez in the summer of 2025. It’s been a hotbed for signings of late, with Theo Hernandez, Ruben Neves, Malcom, Joao Cancelo and Marcos Leonardo all making the switch.
Mo Salah to Join Any MLS Club – 12/1
A move to the MLS seems unlikely. The numbers simply do not add up, and at 12/1, it’s clear the bookies agree this is an outside shot.
There has, however, been interest from the States as recently as 2025. Chicago Fire tabled a bid to tempt Salah before he signed his two-year extension with Liverpool, the same team that was also vocal in its approach for both Neymar and Kevin De Bruyne.
San Diego FC are another MLS side looking to add a destination player (DP) to their roster. British-Egyptian owner Mohamed Mansour is said to be close to Salah, and it could be a fit if he were looking to get in on the ground level of one of the more exciting MLS projects.
Money will likely kill this deal before it gets started. His remaining contract is still worth around £30 million at Liverpool, which would need to be covered along with any transfer fee.
Son Heung-min’s move to LAFC was worth around £20 million, so records will need to be smashed to make this happen.
Odds of 12/1 look inviting, but Saudi Arabia is far more financially equipped to do a full Salah deal right now. Unless, of course, he’s willing to take a considerable pay cut.
Is Salah Leaving Liverpool – Final Verdict
We don’t think so. At least, not in January.
It’s clear Salah is cutting a very frustrated figure. He generally only speaks to the media when things aren’t going well or, rightly or wrongly, when pushing for a new contract.
The latter is clearly not an issue, and he will almost certainly leave when his deal concludes in 2027, so it’s not like Liverpool needs to force him out the door. Numbers this season are down on his heroics from 2024-25, but at 0.47 goals/assists per game, they’re not a total loss.
Slot leaving him out of the squad for the Inter Milan game isn’t that surprising. You can’t air your dirty laundry in public like this without repercussion, and Salah, deep down, will know it.
They’d be wise to use AFCON as a cooling-off period. A time to reset for both player and club. Reflection, if you will. Add to this the fact that he could be away until late January, and it not only limits the timeframe for a deal but also gives both sides time to heal.
Will the Salah transfer saga roll on? Almost certainly. But do we think he will leave? Not just yet, so odds of 1/2 for him to stay past January has to be the play right now.
