With the sensational news that Ruben Amorim has been sacked at Old Trafford, the markets are opening about his replacement as the next Manchester United manager odds go live.

Ruben Amorim has been sacked as Manchester United manager

Amorim’s post-match comments that followed their 1-1 draw with Leeds United on Sunday proved to be the final nail in the coffin after a turbulent 14-month stint. Stating “I’m here to be the manager, not coach” had an underlying tone that something wasn’t quite right behind the scenes.

He added on Christmas Eve that to play his “perfect 3-4-3, we need to spend a lot of money – I’m starting to think that won’t happen”. Clearly, his relationship with the Man United hierarchy, most notably director of football Jason Wilcox, had become strained beyond repair, and Fabrizio Romano was among the first to announce his departure from his role on Monday morning.

The search for his replacement now begins, and while a job that can be a poisoned chalice, it is still widely regarded as one of the biggest in football.

Darren Fletcher

As part of Manchester United's statement, it was announced that Darren Fletcher would take charge of their next game against Burnley on Wednesday. But The Athletic have expanded further on this, stating that he could take control until the end of the season, before making a permanent appointment.

Essentially, this gives the current Under-18s head coach first crack at the whip. Fletcher has been in and around the first team for several years now and is, of course, highly thought of at the club, having made 342 appearances in 20 years' service (including youth career).

The Manchester United board went down a similar route back in 2018, appointing Ole Gunnar Solskjær on an interim basis before offering him the role full-time when Jose Mourinho was sacked.

It’s a huge job for someone so new to management, however. Odds of 8/13 look incredibly short, and it would have to take an incredible run of form to think that he would be in the mix on a permanent basis. One to avoid, for now.

Oliver Glasner

Oliver Glasner’s stock at Crystal Palace has continued to soar. He masterminded the club's first piece of silverware by winning the FA Cup last summer and has moulded his side into a solid upper-mid table Premier League outfit on a limited budget.

What’s interesting about Glasner is that he’s publicly stated that he would not renew his contract with Palace when it expires in the summer of 2026. Couple this with reports that Fletcher will get the job on an interim basis before a permanent appointment in the summer, and stars are starting to align.

He’s currently priced at 3/1 to get the job, and for now, this looks the smart play.

Enzo Maresca

Markets have only been live for less than an hour, but no one’s next Manchester United manager odds have been cut more than Enzo Maresca. The former Chelsea man has shortened from 10/1 to 2/1 to take charge, which is significant.

He left his role at Chelsea on New Year’s Day, in a fashion not too dissimilar to Amorim’s dismissal, citing a breakdown in his relationship with the board.

It could be a plausible move, given his experience with being at a big club and his claims to be a “project coach”, buzzwords the Manchester United board will no doubt lap up.

For now, Oliver Glasner looks the better value given timings, but there’s often no smoke without fire when odds move as quickly as they have, even if the market is still very fresh.
