Bet 1: Brentford v Sunderland – Over 1.5 Goals
Sunderland are very well known for their ability to keep things tight, including when they play away from home. Backing ‘total goals’ in big numbers would be a mistake, but there’s enough evidence for over 1.5 in this game at the Gtech Community Stadium.
Sunderland, though having utlised an excellent last line of defence, still have an average xG against them of 1.6 goals per away game in the Premier League. For their part, Brentford’s home xG is 1.8 goals per game. A total of over 1.5 is certainly achievable, and is supported by a strong 83% Kickform figure.
Bet 2: Fulham v Chelsea – Draw or Chelsea
We remarked previously that, given their tight schedule, nothing much is likely to change with Chelsea despite previous manager Enzo Maresco leaving his post. For us, that could be a good thing as the Blues remain a stronger proposition than Fulham, despite the fact that their neighbours are only three points behind them.
Chelsea have played 16 away games in all competitions this season. They have failed to score only once. Both sides put a lot of effort into entertaining draws at the weekend against Liverpool and Man City respectively, and there may be some tired legs in the second half of this match.
Chelsea can take advantage of that, though we’d like some insurance against a capable home team and so draw or Chelsea in the double chance market looks like the way to go.
Bet 3: Manchester City to Beat Brighton
Man City have dropped vital points over the New Year fixtures and now find themselves six points behind leaders Arsenal. The motivation and sheer need to respond remains, and we reckon they have enough to grab three points on Wednesday.
City remain consistent as hosts. Since their opening home defeat against Spurs, Pep Guardiola’s men have remained undefeated, scoring every time they’ve played at the Etihad. They’ll be disappointed with Chelsea’s late equaliser on Sunday, but the former champions still boast some of the Premier League’s top individual performers, including Haaland, Doku, Foden and Cherki, who can all do damage.
They should have too much for Brighton, who conceded four at Man United, two at Arsenal in the cup, two more there in the league and two at Liverpool. They are solid, but when they visit the big teams, they tend to struggle.
Bet 4: Newcastle to Beat Leeds
Newcastle will be disappointed with their league position, and they have let too many leads slip this season. They do take those leads though, and now sit as the sixth-best home team in the league with 20 points from 10 games at St James’ Park. In contrast, Leeds are 18th away from home with only six points from 10.
Thiaw, Bruno and stand-in right-back Miley are performing brilliantly at present. Wissa’s inclusion in the team also adds depth up front. Kickform gives Newcastle a 72% chance as well as a 4* confidence rating and we agree with that assessment.
The Toon eventually ground down Crystal Palace last Sunday. This time Wednesday, they will be hoping for more like the two goals in the first 20 minutes they scored against Chelsea, or the two in the opening seven they scored at Burnley in order to get this one in the bag early.
