Tyson Fury Backed to Shine

Just when we thought he was out, Fury is back in the game and he has picked an intriguing opponent to restart his professional boxing career.

Makhmudov may not be a big mainstream name, though he is not someone you’d like to meet in a dark alley on a Saturday night.

The Russian stands at nearly two metres tall, boasts a 21-2 professional record, and has a face scarier than your wife when you return home from a night out three hours later than planned.

Makhmudov recently defeated popular Yorkshireman David Allen over in Sheffield, marking his first victory in the United Kingdom – a win which ultimately earned him this massive opportunity.

Despite his many accolades, the 36-year-old remains a huge underdog (as evidenced by the 9/2 odds).

Simply speaking, Makhmudov lacks speed and is expected to receive a shower of punches from a far more mobile Gypsy King. Fury is expected to show his class, and dance around his big-punching rival before getting the win.

This does seem like a carefully calculated comeback opponent for Fury, who has not been in competitive action since losing to Oleksandr Usyk in December 2024.

Will Tyson Fury Reclaim Heavyweight Gold?

Speaking amid the comeback announcement, Fury told his fans on social media: “Excited to be back. Heart's always been and always will be in boxing. Someone go tell the king that the ace is back!”

The Brit has been training in Thailand over recent weeks as he prepares for his latest challenge. However, how far can the 37-year-old go in this latest run?

Fury’s most recent retirement was inflicted by Usyk, with the Ukrainian picking up successive victories over the Brit in Saudi Arabia. A third fight is unlikely as Usyk sets sights on other ambitions.

A big all-British showdown with Anthony Joshua also appears off the table following AJ's recent tragedy in Nigeria.

What does seem likely, however, are possible bouts with other top contenders such as Daniel Dubois and current WBO world champion Fabio Wardley.

Before all that, Fury will be focusing on Makhmudov as he looks to dispatch the big-hitting Russian in clinical fashion.
