Manchester City host the second leg of this Carabao Cup semi-final with a lead to protect, while Newcastle arrive chasing dreams. One side needs calm, the other needs a bit of chaos. We’ve built a five-leg bet builder, siding with logic over miracles at 10/1.
Man City vs Newcastle Bet Builder Tips: Our Five-Leg Betting Strategy
Wednesday night’s big game is about Newcastle. Why? Because at 2-0 up, City don’t need to force anything, and they are capable of controlling affairs. Newcastle do though, and that power imbalance should shape the game.
For City, there are some question marks. Ruben Dias may not feature, while Jeremy Doku, Savinho, Mateo Kovacic, Josko Gvardiol and John Stones remain sidelined. Does that team news actually change the outlook?
Frankly, it’ll need to change history. Newcastle will attempt to become just the second team to overturn a two-goal first-leg deficit and reach a League Cup final since Aston Villa managed it against Tranmere back in 1993-94. Even then, Villa’s first-leg defeat was away from home. Newcastle, meanwhile, have lost 17 of their last 18 visits to Manchester City.
Is there any good news for them? Well, they progressed in their previous two Carabao Cup ties against Man City in 2014 and 2023, also claiming a 2-1 Premier League win at home in November.
We’ve found five bets we think fit the situation. bet365 leads the way among our preferred UK bookmakers, offering odds of 10/1 on our bet builder.

Bet 1: Total Corners – Over 8.5
There is a slight risk here. From Manchester City’s point of view, they can potentially do what they do best and simply keep possession, kill off the game and walk off to Wembley. It’s on Newcastle not to allow that.
Eddie Howe’s side do average almost six corners per game away from home. Man City average around seven at the Etihad. In total, 10 corners per game are taken at Man City’s home ground, and 11 per game are taken when Newcastle play away.
Even if it’s not from the start, Newcastle have to open up this match at some point. The likes of Lewis Hall and Anthony Gordon will stay very wide and look for opportunities, with corners and free-kicks almost certainly coming in abundance.
Bet 2: Total Goals – Over 2.5
Will those corners lead to goals? It’s hard to attempt to second-guess Eddie Howe. He loves to keep it tight away from home, but frankly, his squad looks incapable of doing that, and they need to attack more this time if they are to have the remotest chance of reaching another final.
Newcastle may attack well and score goals. They have the players to do it. What they’ll also do, however, is leave space at the back for Manchester City to exploit. We don’t need to care too much about who scores, as long as three or more goals are registered, which looks likely in this situation.
Bet 3: Malick Thiaw – Over 1.5 Tackles
When the space comes, Man City will look to take full advantage. Newcastle need players who will put their foot in, and Malick Thiaw can be relied upon for that.
No matter the formation chosen by Eddie Howe, Thiaw should appear as the only fit, right-footed centre-back option. He will play with Burn, Botman or both, and could be the last line of defence when attacks at the other end break down. This is a selection not based on skill, but on the fact that tackles will need to be made.
Bet 4: Newcastle – Over 1.5 Cards
As those tackles come in, the cards start coming out. Assuming the game opens up, or simply doesn’t go Newcastle’s way in the second half, there will be fouls, tactical stops and frustration. Newcastle have picked up nine yellows in their last five games in all competitions, and this semi-final situation lends itself perfectly to the fourth leg of our bet.
Bet 5: Harvey Barnes – Over 0.5 Shots on Target
Whatever Newcastle do or don’t achieve in this match, they will at least fight. We need reliability and versatility for a bet like this, and that’s what we get with Barnes. Howe may play Woltemade or Wissa in the middle, we don’t know, but we do know that Barnes will be involved, no matter whether he plays on the left or the right. He’s not shy to have a dig, so when he finds a bit of space, expect him to go for the bullseye.
