Bet 1: Birmingham v Leeds United – Birmingham to Qualify

The midday kick-off on Sunday should be a spicy one. Birmingham v Leeds United offers us a flavour of the FA Cup of old – a hostile home crowd and a potential upset. What we’ve also found is a great betting opportunity, backed up in part by our data hub, Kickform.

Birmingham, still harbouring hopes of reaching the Championship play-offs, are now unbeaten in eight games. Though they failed to beat Leicester at home last time out, they remain formidable at St Andrews, with the home team and their crowd making it very difficult for opponents. Leeds are on a decent run of their own, but they were gifted a comeback draw at Chelsea recently, and they will not find this easy.

Kickform reckons there’s a 53% chance that Birmingham either win or draw this match. We agree. By backing Birmingham to qualify, rather than to win the game, they can get past Leeds in 90 minutes, after extra time, or even after penalties. We only care that they qualify for the next round.

Bet 2: Grimsby v Wolves – Wolves to Win

You could argue that this is a little different for Premier League Wolves, entertaining a crowd of less than 10,000, but Blundell Park should be rocking on Sunday afternoon. The Mariners have beaten both Wealdstone and Weston-super-Mare, but as far as facing teams beginning with ‘W’ goes – it could be third time unlucky.

Manager Rob Edwards clearly isn’t going to allow his Wolves players to accept that they’re already relegated from the Premier League, but we all know their demotion is inevitable. So does Edwards, and so he and his players may as well go as far as possible in the cup. They have better players than Grimsby, that’s obvious, so they can put them away and secure a last-16 spot.

Bet 3: Stoke v Fulham – Stoke to Qualify

We’re in a similar situation with this game as we were with Birmingham versus Leeds. The Premier League side are away, the Championship team are at home, and they’ll be backed up by a very vociferous crowd cheering them on.

That could influence the game. Stoke are no mugs at home, the Potters having a positive goal difference from 15 Championship matches on their own patch this term. Fulham are in the league above, but their away form leaves something to be desired, given that their goal difference is -11 from 13 games.

Kickform is less confident of the home side going through this time, but there are reasons to ignore that and take this one on. This could be a battle, so once more we look for Stoke to qualify by any means, rather than over 90 minutes.

Bet 4: Macclesfield v Brentford – HT/FT (Brentford/Brentford)

Macclesfield go into Monday night’s game looking to produce another giant-killing after taking care of Crystal Palace in the last round of the FA Cup. Somehow, we don’t think the Bees are going to let that happen.

With no real reason to think they’ll rest too many first team players for what could be a ‘gimme’ into round five, manager Keith Andrews will want a fast start. The tactic is likely be to put the peddle down early, get the game won, and then rest some legs. To back up their prowess in this situation, it’s worth mentioning that Brentford have led at half-time in four of their last five Premier League away games.

The London side have been playing very well, and they can put the Cheshire outfit to the sword. Brentford to be winning at half-time and full-time is the call.
