Few races carry more weight than the 2000 Guineas and the Kentucky Derby – stallion-making contests steeped in history since 1809 and 1875. After watching all the horses and diving deep into the form and data, here are my 2000 Guineas tips and Kentucky Derby 2026 picks for this Saturday, 2 May 2026.

2000 Guineas & Kentucky Derby Tips: My Top Two for Newmarket & Churchill Downs

No guesswork – my 2000 Guineas tips and Kentucky Derby picks are live. Distant Storm and Further Ado look overpriced – StarSports and William Hill, two of the best bookmakers, are leading the way with the odds.

2000 Guineas Betting Tips: I’m Backing Distant Storm with Confidence

The 2000 Guineas is special – the first Classic of the season and a true test of the best three-year-old milers. This looks like a slightly thinner renewal than usual. We’ve lost key contenders in Publish, Gewan, Zavateri and Samangan, while Aidan O’Brien’s team hasn’t landed a major blow. That mainly impacts the market, but not my selection.

One angle that consistently holds: the Guineas is closer to a colt’s final juvenile run than a fresh three-year-old start. The vast majority of winners were top-class two-year-olds with proven Group form.

That brings in unbeaten favourite Bow Echo, winner of the Royal Lodge Stakes. Solid, but he had to work for it, and I’m not convinced there’s too much more improvement to come yet.

The key form is the Dewhurst Stakes, effectively the juvenile championship. Distant Storm ran there off a less-than-ideal break, having bolted up in the Tattersalls Stakes, where he matched Bow Echo’s standard on the same card.

More importantly, he did it the hard way. He was on the wrong part of the track and still clocked the fastest sectional, an 11.07-second furlong at peak race speed. Finishing third to Gewan under those circumstances is serious form.

I’m effectively treating him as a Dewhurst winner, and nothing else in this field matches that level. Stablemate King’s Trail is interesting too, but inexperienced – he’s effectively on trial for the Derby. With Charlie Appleby and William Buick having dominated this race recently, I’m expecting more of the same, his colts featuring high among my 2000 Guineas 2026 tips.

Kentucky Derby 2026 Betting Tips: My Best Bet Locked In

From the straight turf mile at Newmarket to the controlled chaos of Churchill Downs on the dirt, the Kentucky Derby is a completely different test. 20 runners over a mile and a quarter, all fighting for an early position. For my Kentucky Derby betting picks, it comes down to quality and race shape.

After analysing the prep races, workouts and data, I narrowed this to three: Renegade, Commandment and Further Ado.

Renegade has the talent, but gate one is a major negative. His closing style leaves him vulnerable to being boxed in or forced to use too much early energy – neither is ideal in a race like this.

Brad Cox holds a strong hand with Commandment, winner of the Florida Derby, a race that boasts the best form this year. Drawn in gate six, he should get the right setup and looks like a major player if the pace collapses late.

But the potential wow factor comes from Cox’s other colt, Further Ado. Visually, he’s been devastating, winning by 20 lengths as a juvenile and by 11 in the Blue Grass Stakes (Grade 1). The opposition hasn’t been elite, but the manner of those wins demands respect.

His pedigree screams a mile and a quarter, and while he’s drawn wide in gate 18, he’s a powerful traveller who can slot in without burning excessive energy. That’s crucial here.

With John Velazquez booked, I expect him to be positioned perfectly turning for the stretch run, and if he settles, he has the engine to see it out and land a famous Derby. He’s high among my Churchill Downs picks.
