Confession time. I love betting on the obscure markets, and they don’t come much more random than betting on World Cup assists. It’s not something we tend to foray into for our stock markets, so it’s been refreshing to dive into this one as we approach kick-off time on Thursday. I’ve got three picks, each with a slightly different approach, but all at odds, I think, and packed with value.

Bet 1: Bruno Fernandes – Portugal
I’m not sure how far Portugal are going to go in this World Cup, but I do fancy them as a bit of a dark horse. There hasn't been much chat in the build-up, which I like, and they’re fourth in the tournament winner market with the best World Cup betting sites. So, there’s clearly talent on offer.
Which brings me nicely into my opening pick for most assists. Bruno Fernandes.
The Manchester United captain has had a stellar season. He’s been the driving force behind an unexpected third-place finish and a return to the Champions League, but more importantly for this market, he’s broken the Premier League assist record, with 21 contributions.
World Cup odds of 10/1 with Betfred look good value and a good place to kick things off.
Bet 2: Michael Olise – France
It’s impossible to look at this market and not be immediately drawn to Michael Olise. I’ve already backed the Bayern Munich winger to win the World Cup Golden Boot, and to do that, his numbers – likely from assists – will have to stack up.
As an Englishman, it’s incredibly frustrating that he slipped through the net and couldn’t be swayed to represent the country he was born in, but as a football fan, his development over the last two seasons has been so impressive to watch.
With 19 assists for Bayern last term and seven for France in the World Cup qualifiers, this isn’t a tough decision to include. I honestly think this tournament will put the kid on the world map, up there with your Mbappe’s, Yamal’s and Dembele’s.
He’s right up there with Fernandes at 10/1, but keep an eye out for some World Cup betting offers which might sweeten this deal a little more.
Bet 3: Pedri – Spain
My final World Cup assists betting tip is Spain’s Pedri. I’ve watched a lot of this little wizard over the last 12 months, and if there’s a more technically gifted centre midfielder in world football right now, I’ve not seen it.
He’s got 12 assists this season, which isn’t huge compared to the numbers of pairs above, but it ranks him in the top eight across Europe over the last calendar year, so not a million miles away.
What I really love are his odds. Betfred are currently running him at 33/1 to get the job done. Now, Spain should go deep, and arguably further than Portugal, so he should get more chances than Fernandes. The question is, can he outlast Olise and the flying French?
It’s a riskier option, for sure, but if you’re up for the gamble, then I’m all for this play.
