2020 Breeders Cup Tips & Predictions

Just when we might have been thinking about winners from Great Britain and Ireland in recent weeks, news reaches us that Love is unlikely to take part and that the excellent Ghaiyyath has been retired out to stud. This, then, forces us into a rethink for 12 furlong Breeders Cup Turf where, this side of the pond at least, they were the leading pair in the market. Aidan O’Brien’s Magical, a seven-time Group One winner no less, looks likely to go in the Turf, a race she should have competed in last year also. Prix de l’Opera winner Tarnawa looks also to be well fancied and the Dermot Weld-trained filly isn’t a bad option at a best price of 7/2. The favourite though is Mogul from Aiden O’Brien’s yard for those looking for a UK winner.

The well-rested Tiz the law looks to be a good shout in the $6 million Classic, an assumption based on his Group One wins in both the Belmont Stakes and in the Travers Stakes. That said, Improbable, top of the Longines Breeders’ Cup Classic weekly Rankings, is the bookies favourite, while Monomoy Girl is our shout for the Distaff and is currently available at around 13/8 with bet365.

Popular Breeders' Cup Betting Markets

In the UK, Breeders' Cup betting is no different from betting on any other horse racing occasion, or indeed other major US horse racing events such as the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness Stakes and the Belmont Stakes. This means, among your many betting opportunities, the following four examples can be enjoyed.

Race Winner

A bet on the race winner is, quite simply, a nice little wager on one race and one race only, and where the punter aims to pick the winner of that particular race. There is nothing else to concern yourself with in a bet such as this, hence why we described it as simple.

Double Betting

Why not take the above bet and, if you have a second horse that you fancy, double them together in a joint wager for bigger wins for the same single stake? To place a double, just select the two horses and place them in your online betting slip. From there, add a single stake on the double bet option and wait for the races to start. Both horses need to win in order to generate a return.

Top Jockey

This is a nice bet that is easy to understand. Here, all you are required to do is pick the jockey that, over the two days, will ride the most winners. Your best chances of success are to look into the rides each jockey has over the two days of the Breeders' Cup and decide if they are likely to be good runners or not.

Forecast Betting

Forecast betting is where the punter selects two horses running in the same race who they believe will be the first two horses past the post. With a forecast bet, the idea is that you pick two horses to come first and second and – this is important – you must get the order correct.

Tournament Structure for the Breeders' Cup

There is a maximum of 14 horses selected for each Breeders’ Cup Championship race. There are a number of ways a horse can qualify for a Breeders’ Cup race, from winning a Breeders’ Cup Challenge race or qualifying through a point ranking system that has built up over the previous season’s major races, wins and places. Another way in is by a panel of expert selection, which usually makes up half the 14 race field. Over the whole weekend there is $31 million paid out in prize money.

History of the Breeders' Cup

The first Breeders' Cup was held in 1984. The idea behind the Breeders' Cup came from the desire to create an end of season championship for North American Thoroughbred racing season, and was first proposed in 1982 by John R. Gaines, a thoroughbred horse owner and breeder who wished to clean up the sport's image. The event has become one of the richest occasions in racing with prize money largely pooled from nomination fees paid for by breeders. The Breeders' Cup is held at a new host venue each year, and, as of 2020, all events have been staged in the United States, with the exception of 1996, when the races were at the Woodbine Racetrack in Canada. It wasn’t until 2007 that the Breeders' Cup was relaunched as a two-day event.

Breeders' Cup Key Stats

  • Mike Smith is the leading Breeders' Cup jockey with 26 wins.
  • With 20 wins, D. Wayne Lukas is the leading Breeders' Cup trainer with 20 wins in total.
  • Nine-year-old Calidoscopio became the oldest horse to win a Breeders' Cup Race in 2012.
  • The oldest ever jockey to win a Breeders' Cup Race is Bill Shoemaker, who rode Ferdinand to victory in 1987 at the age of 56.
  • The youngest jockey to ever win a Breeders' Cup Race is Joseph O’Brien, who was just 18 when he won on the back of St Nicholas Abbey in 2011.
