The Mosconi Cup, an annual pool competition, is played by teams from Europe and the USA. The hosting of the tournament alternates between the USA and, for the main part, England.

Tournament Structure for The Mosconi Cup

The Mosconi Cup, contested each year by teams representing the USA and Europe, is often compared to bowling’s Weber Cup or the Ryder Cup in golf. Based around Nine Ball Pool, the tournament took its name from the American pool player Willie Mosconi. The event was first held in 1994, and the format and structure would be changed numerous times.

Either team has five players, two of these being either the captain or vice-captain – although these could also be non-playing members of the team. Three players are picked based on their position on the Nine Ball World Rankings as stated in the team selection rules, and are joined by two wild card selections chosen by the team captain.

Teams compete over a team match, doubles matches and single matches, where the tournament is scored on a first to eleven match wins basis. All matches at the Mosconi Cup are a race to five, with teams taking it in turns to make the break. The tournament lasts four days and players on the winning team receive $30,000, while $15,000 is picked up by the runner-up players.

The Mosconi Cup 2022 Betting Odds, Tips, Promotions & Predictions

The UK, which had traditionally been more of a snooker betting nation, played a big role in the increase in popularity of betting on pool (not to be confused with pool betting). Nowhere would this be truer than with the Mosconi Cup, the 2022 renewal of which will get underway at the Ballys Las Vegas casino in Nevada, USA on the 30th November, and come to an end on December 3rd.

The Mosconi Cup Betting Tips & Predictions

The 2022 renewal of the Mosconi Cup sees this pool mega event make its long awaited return to Las Vegas. The European Team is being led by their captain, the Netherlands’ Alex Lely, who is the second-ranked Billiards player in the world but takes his place here as the non playing captain. The five other men joining him include the number one ranked player Albin Ouschan (Austria), 2019 Pool Masters champion David Alcaide (Spain), former MVP of the Mosconi Cup Joshua Filler (Germany), Jayson Shaw (Scotland) (Playing Vice-captain), and Francisco Sanchez Ruiz (Spain). Such a strong line up is the reason by Team Europe being heavily favoured to win the event for the third time in a row. It is also worth pointing out that since 2011 Europe have won eight of the last 10 Mosconi Cup tournaments.

Jeremy Jones is the non playing captain for Team USA. Jones is a billiards veteran, and he is being joined by Skyler Woodward as his co-captain alongside Shane Van Boeing, Tyler Styer, Earl Strickland and Oscar Dominguez. Team USA has won three of the last four Mosconi Cups but momentum has since shifted across the Atlantic and even home advantage shouldn’t do much to improve American chances.

Popular Mosconi Cup Betting Markets

Being a team event, there are plenty of betting markets to take advantage of when wagering on the Mosconi cup; there really is something for everybody – from match betting to tournament betting and individual player betting.

Outright Winner

An outright winners’ bet is as simple and uncomplicated as pool betting gets. With this one, after four days of top class competitive pool action, a wager is simply made on which team between the USA and Europe will win the Mosconi Cup. This winner is the first team to rack up eleven match.

Point Score

Point score betting, where an attempt to predict what the final score will be, is made by savvy punters. This could either be for a match (whether it’s a team match, a game of doubles or a singles game), or they can place a wager on what the final tournament point score will be and which team scores the number of points.

Top European Scorer

Here, bettors predict which player will be the leading point scorer for Team Europe. Note that the top scorer in the tournament does not have to be selected.

Top American Point Scorer

This is only applied to Team USA and is an identical bet to the one above. Once again, this player only needs to lead the points scoring for the Americans, what happens elsewhere is irrelevant.

History of The Mosconi Cup

The Mosconi Cup was first held in 1994 in Dagenham and one year later in Basildon, both in Essex, England. In fact, across the Atlantic, the event wasn’t held until 2003, and hosting of the event began switching hands each year.

Barry Hearn’s Matchroom Sport promotions company gave the initial idea as a way to promote pool in the UK, where historically snooker ruled supreme, being another Matchroom-promoted sport along with darts and boxing.

The American pool player William Mosconi died one year before the inaugural event took place, and the brand-new competition was named in his honour. Both teams were made up of six men and two women in that first year. This has never been the case since, but in the initial event, Team Europe included Germany's Franziska Stark and Allison Fisher of England, while Team USA had Jeanette Lee and Vivian Villarreal in their team.

In the past, snooker superstars such as Ronnie O'Sullivan, Jimmy White, Steve Davis and even Alex Higgins had been part of Team Europe.

When the event is held in a European year, the main host city has been London, with La Vegas being destination each time the USA hosts. The Mosconi Cup has been hosted on two occasions, 2004 and 2006, by the Netherlands; also staged in St. Julian's, Malta in 2008.

Due to the pandemic of 2020, the Ricoh Arena in Coventry held that year’s event. The tournament returned to London and the Alexandra Palace – where it was supposed to have been held in 2020 – one year later. This marked the first time since 2002 that consecutive tourneys had been held in England.

While the Mosconi Cup began life as a promotion based exhibition event, it has since evolved into a far more serious and professional tournament. In the more serious era, it was only Steve Davis of the mentioned professional snooker players above who continued to play. In fact, Davis – only when the event started to clash with snooker's UK Championship – discontinued.

Following Davis’ withdrawal, invitations were required to be earned by players through results achieved at other pool events, meaning that until Tony Drago in 2007 – who earned his call up by way of European Pool Tour performances, the Mosconi Cup would have no snooker players.

Historically, both teams have enjoyed periods of dominance with 10 of the first 12 tournaments between 1994 and 2005, which included six consecutive victories by Team USA. In 2006, the tournament was tied before Team Europe won the cup 10 times in 11 years. That included eight consecutive victories between 2007 and 2017.
