How Is Snooker Played?
This game is played between two people, on a table covered in a green baize specially designed, sized, and marked for snooker. The aim of the game is to pot balls into pockets for points in order to win a frame. Snooker is played to a best of number of frames.
Players strike the white ball using a snooker cue. On the table, each of the coloured balls have a different numerical value, with 15 reds plus one ball for each of the other colours.
A break refers to when a player first breaks up the red balls before spending a period of time potting reds and colours alternatively to achieve a high score. The highest break that a snooker player can make is 147. Players take it in turns to attempt to pot the balls in a red-colour-red sequence. If they pot a ball, they get another turn; but if they miss, their opponent steps up to start on red again.
If they pot a colour after the red, it is put back in its designated spot on the table. Once all the reds have been potted (unlike colours, which stay down), the colours must be potted in the following order: yellow, green, brown, blue, pink, black. Once one player has assumed a lead that cannot be overtaken, they win that frame.
There will be times where players are unable to sink a ball. When this happens, they can choose to set up a tricky play for their opponents who will step up to the table next. This is known as a snooker, and is designed to ensure that the opponent fouls on their turn while looking for a red. If they miss a red and hit a colour, or pot the white ball, it is a foul, and the first player earns at least four points.
Major Professional Snooker Betting Tournaments
The typical professional snooker season runs from June through May of the following year and consists of 52 events, 17 of which are ranking. The first of these is the Championship League, which runs for nearly a month and takes place at the Morningside Arena in Leicester.
The season then culminates in the biggest event in the sport, the World Snooker Championship — the final of which takes place each May at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield, Yorkshire, England.
Here are some of the biggest events in the WST season.
World Snooker Championship
As mentioned above, the Betfred Snooker World Championship takes place each April at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield and sees the best 16 players in the world take on 16 qualifiers. This championship is the leading snooker tournament when it comes to prestige and also prize money.
Dafabet Masters Snooker
The event, sponsored by the online bookmaker Dafabet, features an 18 strong field made up of the top 16 ranked players plus two wild cards. It is a non-ranking event that was first held in 1975, and runs in January each year at London’s Alexandra Palace.
Betway UK Snooker Championship
The UK Championship is the second biggest ranking tournament. It is one of snooker's prestigious Triple Crown events, along with the World Championship and the Masters. It is held in November at the York Barbican and is currently sponsored by Betway.
BetVictor Championship League Snooker
Staged at the Morningside Arena in Leicester, the Championship League Snooker takes place annually with 64 players from the World Snooker Tour. The format involves eight groups, each consisting of seven players. It is played intermittently to make way for other tourneys over the season.
Other Snooker Tournaments
Most Popular Snooker Betting Markets
Snooker is not only great to watch live, but also a good sport to have a wager on, with no shortage of markets to offer. From outright winner markets, where you are betting on a player to win the tournament outright, to match win betting in a regular one vs one match, there's something for every snooker punter.
But the snooker betting markets are not restricted to just which player wins; you can also bet on how they win the match, and by how many frames. Among the many other betting options that snooker provides is the prop bet for a 147 break — the maximum break in snooker.
Below, we have listed some of the betting markets to give you a better understanding of what you can expect from snooker betting.
Match Win Bet
Backing a player to win a match is the most common market in sport. And because there are no draws in snooker, there are only two possible outcomes, win or lose.
Outright Snooker Tournament Market Betting
Online bookmakers offer snooker outright tournament markets, where bettors punt on the outright winner of a major tournament.
Frame Win Bet
Snooker matches are broken down into frames, and a Frame Win Bet allows you to punt on who will win each of these frames or how many will be won in total.
Snooker Total Legs Betting
The equivalent of a snooker “total frames” bet, this market allows the punter to wager on the total amount of frames numbering over or under a value set by the bookmaker.
Snooker Frame Handicap Betting
Handicaps occur in betting when one player is favoured over their opponents; this also applies to snooker betting. To curb the bias in skill, bookmakers offer a handicap of frames to level the playing field. At the end of the match, these frames are added to the final score and the winner is determined accordingly.
How To Bet on Snooker
Now that you know what your betting options are when it comes to snooker, you might be wondering how to actually get betting. Starting from the very top, here’s how to bet on snooker:
You will first need to pick a leading bookmaker. Check out our list of the best snooker betting sites and choose the one you think will suit you best based on your own criteria.
Now, you need to sign up for your new account. This is usually a very simple process that doesn’t differ too much between operators. Look for a button marked ‘Sign Up' or ‘Register', usually found in the top-right corner of the homepage. Click on it.
The next step in the process is to enter all of the details the bookmaker requires. Remember to claim any welcome bonuses on offer when signing up, and to make sure that you have understood any related terms and conditions you will need to satisfy in order to unlock your bonus. This is especially true regarding deposit methods, as often e-wallets and other options will not be eligible for the offer. Once you have decided how much you wish to deposit and in which currency, you can go ahead and make a deposit.
Now that your account is open and fully funded, you can go ahead and start betting! Find the snooker markets and select the bet you wish to place. Tap on the displayed odds and that bet will then appear in your betting slip. From there, simply select your stake, remembering that if this is the bet that you using to unlock your welcome bonus, you will need to honour the minimum stake and odds requirement. When all this is done and you're ready to bet, click on the Place Bet option and your wager will be live.
Choosing the Best Snooker Betting Site
Trying to decide where to place your wagers on snooker? Well, there are a number of factors you should take into consideration, including betting markets and events offered. It is also worth checking whether the operator features pre-match or in-play betting, as well as outright bets.
It goes without saying that you also want the best possible odds and plenty of betting bonuses, along with a wide range of payment methods.
If you are anything like the rest of the betting community, mobile performance and user experience will be crucial, so look for a site that has a high-quality betting app. Finally, always make sure you are betting with a site that boasts all the relevant licensing certification and employs all the appropriate security features.
Snooker Betting Tips
As with other sports, success in snooker betting is mainly achieved after bettors have assumed a better understanding of the game. Only by dedicating time to research all of the variables that can affect the outcome of a match or tournament can we fully know that we are making an informed bet.
As such, understanding player form, head-to-head results and statistics is key when betting on snooker. Remember, certain players might perform better or worse in front of specific crowds. Below, we have listed some more snooker betting tips.
Know the Game
To increase your chances of making a profit when betting on snooker, you need to know all about what you’re betting on. There is no point in betting on snooker if you don’t know who the players are or how the game is played.
Do your Homework
Conduct some research, perhaps by following snooker news in the media. In doing this, you will gain some good general knowledge and will be in a far better position to learn the rules of snooker that will help you spot the best snooker betting odds.
Understand the Different Tournaments
It is also critical that punters have a full grasp on the tournament format, including how many frames it takes to win a match (these usually build in number as the tournament progresses). To that end, investigate the format of the tournament you are looking to bet on.
Gamble Responsibly
As should only ever be the case when betting, only bet what you can afford to lose and never chase your losses. Also spread your risk across numerous bets.
Snooker Live Betting
Snooker is very often played in sessions with players taking breaks (no pun intended) between frames. Make no mistake, snooker can be a very slow game to play out, especially when players are continuously playing safety shots until someone finally pots a sinker.
Because of this, snooker lends itself to live betting by its very nature. Unlike 6-furlong horse races or sprint races in an athletics event, snooker makes it perfect for live betting. Thus, you are not limited to betting pre-match because you can always bet in play too.
Snooker Betting Sites With Livestreaming
Watching live matches is helpful for snooker betting because you can see the action unfold live and react to it in real time. One such way to act on what is happening is to cash out your bet early to minimize your losses.
Most bookmakers offer both livestreaming and cash-out options, all with different requirements to unlock the stream such as having at least £1 on your account balance, having a positive account balance or to have placed a bet within the previous 24 hours. Some of the best snooker betting sites with livestreaming include Coral, Ladbrokes, Betfred, and Unibet.

Of course, with such popularity comes new opportunities to bet – which is another reason we absolutely love snooker.
