How is Golf Played?
In golf, players are tasked with hitting a ball from the tee, the point where that particular hole begins, to the putting green. The latter is signified by a flag that is resting in a hole, and it is that hole that is the player’s target. Ideally, the player will make it from tee to hole in as few shots as possible and sticking mainly to the well-maintained fairway in between. This is because each hole has a designated stroke limit that golfers are aiming to beat or at the very least meet. This amount is referred to as par.
Away from the fairway, there might be water hazards, unkempt grounds known as rough, out of bounds areas and sandy bunkers, all designed to influence a golfer’s strategy. In a round of golf, there are 18 of these holes, with the 19th commonly referring to a drink in the clubhouse afterwards. In tournament golf, there are basically two forms of play. These are match play where games are decided by holes won and lost, and more commonly stroke play where games are decided by the total number of strokes taken to complete the round.
Scoring in Golf
Scoring in golf works by players completing each hole in as few shots as they possibly can. Each hole has a designated target hit amount which is called par. A good game of golf is where players complete 18 holes with a healthy under par score.
Score | Name | Detail |
---|---|---|
+3 | Triple Bogey | 3 strokes over par |
+2 | Double Bogey | 2 strokes over par |
+1 | Bogey | 1 stroke over par |
0 | Par | Exact par |
-1 | Birdie | 1 stroke under par |
-2 | Eagle | 2 strokes under par |
-3 | Albatross | 3 strokes under par |
-4 | Condor | 4 strokes under par |

Golf Betting Tips and Strategies
In terms of golf betting tips, there is plenty that bettors can do to tip the odds in their favour, but the main thing is to do your homework. Only through research will bettors be able to make informed wagers that are more likely to win. When we say research, we mean things like reading up on stats, player form on certain courses, recent player fitness, player history in the same event, general form and likely weather conditions. Basically, any influencing variable.
When considering betting on a golfer, the first things you should ask yourself is what their current form has been like. Then, look into how well they have played on the same course or at the very least similar types of courses. Statistics are another handy guide full of useful and relevant information that any savvy punter should seriously utilise. In short, your hunches can betray you and they alone will not be enough to generate regular winning bets.
Most Popular Golf Betting Markets
If we didn’t know any better, we could be made to believe that golf was invented purely for people to bet on, so suited to a wager as it is. The very nature of the game opens up a whole plethora of bets.
Outright Tournament Winner
This is a straightforward and uncomplicated wager on the player that you believe will win the tournament. If you are harbouring any doubts about the player’s reliability in delivering the win, double or split your stake and make it an each-way bet, allowing your pick to finish among the top performers rather than relying on a win.
Best golf betting site for outright winner: bet365
Betting on The Cut
In any given stroke play tournament, there is a cut that is enforced after two days play that typically eliminates the lower half of the field in order to reduce the number of challengers. Golfers who continue playing after the cut are said to have made the cut, while those who don't advance have missed the cut. You can bet on whether or not a player will make or miss the cut.
Best bookmaker for making the cut: Ladbrokes golf betting
Hole-in-One Betting
A hole-in-one is where the layer lands the ball in the hole in one shot straight from the tee. As you can imagine, this is a rare shot – but you can place a bet on this, knowing that it is unlikely, for high odds. You do not have to nominate a player to hit the miraculous shot.
Best golf betting site for hole in ones: Betfred
First Round Leader Betting
With a first round leader bet, you are looking to find the player who will be on top of the leaderboard after the first day’s play has concluded. It does not matter what happens to your player after this, as this bet counts only towards day one and that day’s final table.
Best golf betting site for first round leader: Unibet
Top 10, Top 20 Finish Betting
In golf, you bet on players finishing among the higher places of a heavy fielded golf tournament. This could be top 10, top 20 or top 5; so long as your selection finishes within those places, you’re in the money.
Best golf betting site for top 10 and top 20 finish: William Hill
Golf Match Bets
Golf match bets pit two players against each other in either a round or the tournament as a whole. With a bet such as this, the bettor is charged with predicting, for money, which of the two players will shoot the lowest score out of the pair. Other than how each player fares against the other, nothing else going on matters for this bet.
Best golf betting site for match bets: Paddy Power
Top Nationality Betting
With the majority, if not all of the golf tournaments that tee off each week, there will be betting markets opened on the top performer from each of the competing nationalities. For example, if there are seven Australians taking part in, say, the Arnold Palmer Invitational, and you wanted to bet on Adam Scott performing best out of those seven, then all he has to do to make your bet a winning one is to outperform his fellow countryman.
Best golf betting site for top nationality: BetVictor
Major Professional Golf Tournaments
While there are tourneys going off all year on either the PGA Tour or The European Tour among others, there are only four major golf tournaments in the golfing season. Of course, there is also one very famous and esteemed team event that goes every two years also. These are as follows:
US Masters
Played in April each year at the famous Augusta course in Georgia, USA, The Masters or US Masters is one of the most esteemed golfing tournaments of the entire year. Famously, the winners are awarded a green jacket which is the dream of any professional golfer to win during their career. It is the only major that plays at the same venue each year.
US Open
The US Open, or to give it its full title the United States Open Championship, is an annual open national championship in the United States of America. It is an event on both the PGA Tour and the European Tour and has no one venue. It is the third of the four major golf championships to go in the season, taking place in mid to late June.
The Open Championships (British Open)
The Open Championships, which is the British Open, is the only non-American event among the majors, and takes its prestige mostly from the fact that golf originates from Scotland in the United Kingdom. Winners of the Open are awarded the internationally famous Claret Jug.
The PGA Championships
The PGA Championship is another of golf’s majors and is held each year in the middle of August making it the fourth and final major of the golf season. Unlike the Masters, this event does not have a fixed venue but moves around the USA to a new course each year.
The Ryder Cup
The Ryder Cup is a biennial men's team event that pits a European team, that was originally British and Irish, against the USA. The venue alternates between courses in Europe and the United States and the competition takes its name from English businessman Samuel Ryder who donated the trophy.
History of Golf
Golf originated on the eastern coast of Scotland close to Edinburgh where locals had been playing a game in which they would hit pebbles over the sand dunes using a bent stick, from which clubs would later derive as golf was formed into a fully-fledged sport. It quickly became so popular that King James II banned the sport in 1457 after too many people refused to go to war with the English, instead choosing to stay at home and play their new game.
Even after the ban, people carried on playing and by 1502 the game gained the royal seal of approval when King James IV of Scotland became the world’s first golfing monarch. The game’s popularity spread quickly across 16th century Europe after Mary Queen of Scots introduced the game to France during her studies there. During her time in France, she was served by her French military aides which were known as cadets and where golf gets the word caddies, a golfer’s personal aide, from.
In 1682, the first international golf match took place between Scotland and England at Leith near Edinburgh. It was also at Leith where the game of golf officially became a sport, when the Gentlemen Golfers of Leith formed the first club in 1744 and set up an annual competition, complete with prizes. The rules for this new competition were drafted by Duncan Forbes, many of which are still enforced today.
By 1764, the first-ever 18-hole course was constructed at St Andrews, while the first golf club formed outside Scotland was the Royal Blackheath near London in 1766. Equipment wise, golfers were using hand-crafted wooden clubs and balls known as featheries which were made from horsehide and stuffed feathers. As the British empire expanded, the game spread to farther shores. The first golf club outside Britain was in Bangalore, India, while the disputed first course in North America is believed to have been in South Carolina close to where today’s RBC Heritage is held, a tournament which awards its winners with a tartan jacket to honour the game’s Scottish heritage.
