Newcastle United look set to rekindle their interest in Crystal Palace central defender Marc Guehi. Palace have stood firm in the face of intense speculation around the England international. Last month Liverpool looked likely to sign Guehi, however, while the Reds remain favourites, the odds have lengthened.

Marc Guehi Transfer Odds
It is far from certain that Guehi will move this summer. However, time is ticking on his contract, and Palace may be forced into a sale now rather than sell the 25-year-old for a reduced fee in January or risk losing him for nothing when his current deal expires. With Newcastle and Liverpool both holding long-term interest in the player, there could be some movement in the next week or so. So, where will Guehi be when the window closes? Let’s look more closely at Guehi’s possible destinations.
Liverpool: Bookies Backing Anfield Switch but Merseybeat Fading
A month ago, the bookies' odds suggested around a 63% chance of Guehi going to Anfield this summer. While Liverpool are still the favourites those odds have lengthened, and bet365 had Liverpool at 5/4, which is 44.4% implied probability.
The Premier League champions have been conducting other transfer business since then and priorities may have changed for boss Arne Slot. Liverpool have spent heavily this summer and if they are successful in their prolonged pursuit of Newcastle’s Alexander Isak, they may not be able to buy Guehi. We think that this could still happen given that Liverpool is, despite their summer splurge, in a healthy PSR position. But Palace drive a hard bargain so there is a chance that the Anfield outfit may put this on the back burner or look elsewhere.
Skipper to Stay: Guehi to Remain With Palace?
Palace adopted a bullish stance last summer when Newcastle enquired about Guehi. And they are in no rush to sell, despite the risk of losing the player for nothing next summer. The Mirror reported that neither Guehi nor Eberechi Eze have ruled out remaining at Selhurst Park. Both clearly enjoy playing for Oliver Glasner and the Eagles’ FA Cup win could encourage them to give it another season. Palace’s demotion to the Conference League due to ownership issues has, however, slightly undermined this. We think that it is possible that both players will stay, but if Guehi does not sign a contract extension, then, realistically, the club may have to cash in.
Newcastle United: Marc to be a Mag
Newcastle United embarked on an ultimately fruitless chase for Guehi last summer. Right-sided centre-back is the only area of the team which has not been strengthened since the takeover and the Crystal Palace skipper is one of boss Eddie Howe’s preferred choices to compete with and ultimately replace Fabian Schar.
However, Yasir Al-Rumayyan, head of the PIF and club chairman has intervened to try to get things moving. The club is bidding to solve the Isak issue and bring in Benjamin Sesko, with the club having tabled an offer. And now it appears that they are about to launch a bid for Guehi. The fact that they are looking to hijack Liverpool’s move for the player is an interesting sideshow given the sagas involving the Isak and Hugo Ekitike transfers.
We think that this could happen, especially if Isak goes to Anfield. If you think that Guehi is Tyneside bound, then you might want to get in now before the odds shorten. However, we have been here before. There are questions to answer over whether Newcastle will match Palace’s valuation and/or Guehi’s wage demands.
