Now let’s have a look at the four matches and why we think our bets will come to fruition.
Djokovic vs Cobolli: Djokovic to win 3-1 (9/4)
After the shock of losing the first set of his round of 16 match 6-1 against Alex de Minaur Novak Djokovic steadied the ship to win the following three sets (6-4, 6-4, 6-4) to book his quarter-final berth.
It was a tough test against an opponent who possesses both grit and quality but although the seven-times Wimbledon champion had some nervous moments he got the job done.
Flavio Cobolli battled to overcome Marin Čilić to make the last eight, the Italian’s best ever Grand Slam performance, despite being no lover of grass.
We think that 38-year-old Djokovic, on the hunt for a staggering 25th Slam, will end Cobolli’s run. We don’t think he will do it in straight sets though. Cobolli, 23, is riding the crest of a wave and we think that he will take a set.
Andreeva vs Bencic Andreeva to win (5/2)
Mirra Andreeva, 18, comfortably beat Hailey Baptiste 6-1, 6-3 to set up a quarter-final meeting with Belinda Bencic. Andreeva is the favourite and we think that she will have enough to progress.
But it won’t be easy. Former Olympic Champion Bencic has a higher win percentage on grass than other surfaces and, after the US Open, Wimbledon has been her most successful Slam.
Bencic came through a rain interrupted third round match against Elisabetta Cocciaretto, which was finally settled in a third set tiebreak followed by an excellent win over Ekaterina Alexandrova. We think that this will go to three sets but that Andreeva will prevail.
Swiatek vs Samsonova: Samsonova to Win (11/5)
The bookies are backing Iga Swiatek but we see a potential upset here. Liudmila Samsonova has not dropped a set so far on her journey to the quarter-finals and is a huge danger to the former world number one.
Nobody is doubting Swiatek’s class. But she has shown in the past that she is not as comfortable on grass as she is on other surfaces. Furthermore, although she came through in straight sets against Claire Tauson, the Pole had her serve broken twice in the opening set.
Swiatek’s return of serve is one of the best in the world and she was able to get out of trouble. However, Samsonova’s serve is her strength, and should she get a break she is unlikely to be as forgiving as Tauson was. Despite the fact that she appears to be in better form than of late we sense more SW19 frustration for Swiatek and think that Samsonova is set for the semis.
Sinner vs Shelton: Over 0.5 Tiebreaks (4/11)
Jannik Sinner was in serious trouble against Grigor Dimitrov on Monday evening. The fact that Sinner was hampered by an elbow injury sustained early on should not detract from the Dimitrov’s excellence. The Bulgarian produced a great exhibition of serving and ground strokes until he himself was forced to retire through injury.
Before this match Sinner had been imperious and, despite doubts over his fitness, he remains favourite in this one. We expect Ben Shelton to cause him problems though. Like Dimitrov, the American has a powerful serve and an excellent forehand. Sinner must find better answers than he did against Dimitrov otherwise his quest for a first Wimbledon title may be ended.
For the record, we expect Sinner to go through. We also expect him to be pushed all the way. Shelton’s matches have featured four tiebreaks so far. We think that there will be at least one more in this quarter-final.
