Taking place annually at Sandown Park, the Tingle Creek Chase is a Grade 1 National Hunt steeplechase that runs in early December. The race, which is open to horses of four years old or more, takes place over a distance of 1 mile and a little over 7 furlongs. Since it was established, Tingle Creek betting and the excitement it generates has grown massively.

Tournament Structure for the Betfair Tingle Creek Chase

The Betfair Tingle Creek Chase is the highlight of a two-day winter festival at Sandown in Surrey, England. Races are staged over both the Friday and Saturday in early December, with the Grade I Betfair Tingle Creek Chase run on the Saturday. The big race is a national hunt steeplechase that takes place over 1 mile, 7 furlongs and 119 yards. Horses of both sexes can enter, but must be four years or older.

The race is staged over the racecourse’s right-handed track and offers up a prize fund of £120,000 – £68,340 of which is handed to the winner. The race takes its name from the 1970s super star race horse, who lit up British horse racing in his time. The dazzling chestnut, who had a white face and noseband, never fell in seven seasons, and won 23 of his 52 races.

Tingle Creek Chase Betting Tips & Predictions 2021

  • Saturday the 4th of December will see the 2021 renewal of the Betfair Tingle Creek Chase. Eight horses have been entered into the Group One classic of this year which will, as ever, take place at Sandown Park. Along with this traditional December spectacle, we should also get an idea of how the season, and in particular, the Cheltenham Queen Mother Champion Chase in March, might play out.
  • Taking place over a distance of about two miles, all eyes, and a good deal of the money, will be on the Willie Mullins trained Chacun Pour Soi, especially now that Arkle Challenge Trophy hero Shishkin hasn’t made the ranks of the declared.
  • Third in the Queen Mother Champion Chase at the thrilling Cheltenham Festival in March, Chacun Pour Soi bounced back with a very fine win in the William Hill Champion Chase at Punchestown, seeing off the challenge of stablemate Allaho. The dynamic Mullins duo are set to go head to head once again at the weekend. Allaho race to a definitive win in the Ryanair Chase at Cheltenham back in March and, and at a best price of 12/1, looks like a very decent outside punt, even if there are suggestions that a longer trip may suit him a bit better.
  • The chief threat to Chacun Pour Soi should, on paper at least, come from the Dan-Skelton-trained Nube Negra. It was Nube Negra that finished ahead of both Allaho, who came in second, and Chacun Pour Soi who followed home in third position at the Champion Chase in March. Nube Negra has already picked up an impressive victory this season, when he was a very imperious winner of the Shloer Chase at Cheltenham back in early November. Right now, Nube Negra is a swiftly improving chaser over this distance and one with an already impressive record.
  • Elsewhere, and someone with an incredibly impressive record in this race, is 11-time winner Paul Niicholls. Just some of the stellar names Nicholls has entered into this race over the years include Master Minded and Politologue, and that is without mentioning the mighty Flagship Uberalles and Kauto Star from the Ditcheat yard. This year he sends both Greaneteen and Hitman into battle. The pair both got their last run out in the Haldon Gold Cup at Exeter, where neither showed their true capabilities. Do not let that fool you, however, as their trainer does not play this race for laughs, and would not have entered them if he was not certain that they could further extend his excellent record in this event.
  • The other entry of note is Captain Guinness, trained by Henry De Bromhead. This runner was the impressive victor of the Group Three Poplar Square Chase at Naas in November, and could very well spring a surprise here.

Tingle Creek Chase Betting Promotions 2021

  • As chief sponsors of the race, Betfair’s welcome offer of up to £100 in free bets is perfect for the Tingle Creek Chase 2021.
  • Alternatively, you could help yourself to £30 in free bets at William Hill.

Popular Tingle Creek Chase Betting Markets

For those looking to place a bet on this race, you should know that there are many options available. After all, this race is one of the biggest of the British national hunt season, leading up to the highly anticipated betting sites for Cheltenham.

Win the Race Betting

With this bet, punters simply need to pick the winning horse to bet on. The best way to do this is to make sure that you fully understand horse racing and know how to read the form. If you're still new to all this or need to refresh your memory, check out our horse racing beginners' guide. From there, you might be able to craft an idea as to whether or not a particular horse enjoys certain types of turf conditions. Remember, this is early December in the UK, so the soil is likely to be soft or possibly firm.

Forecast Betting

Forecast betting is where punters aim to correctly predict the first two horses to cross the line in a nominated race, which, in this case, is the Betfair Tingle Creek Chase. To win the bet, the horses must finish in the exact order that the punter predicted – otherwise, the bet will fail. To get around this, many choose to place a reverse forecast which, for double the stake, allows for the same two horses to come home in either order.

Double Bet Betting

You could, as always, pick the winner and double it up with the winner of any other race you like. This way, one winning bet makes the stake for the next bet and, for the price of one bet, you could have yourself a nice pay day – should both horses win.

Of course, there is no need to stop there. You can also pick three horses for a treble or as many as you like for higher accumulators or other multiple variant bets.

Placepot Betting

Because the Tingle Creek takes place over two days, bettors have the option to place a Placepot bet on either or both days. Placepots are designed to take in an entire day’s race card and always max out at six races. Because of this, if there are seven races on the card, as is the case on the Tingle Creek Saturday, then a Placepot bet will apply to the opening six races only.

With this bet, punters pick a selection in each of the day’s races that they believe will finish among the places. To win the bet, you must get a placed selection of each leg of the Placepot, which will then pay out at a Tote declared amount relevant to a single £1.

History of the Betfair Tingle Creek Chase

The Betfair Tingle Creek Chase was first held in 1979, and it was named after the legendary 1970s National Hunt racehorse, Tingle Creek, who enjoyed a lot of success at Sandown Park. The race was not originally a Grade I, but was upgraded to that status in 1994. Prior to this, the race was a handicap.

As a race that attracts the top equine talent from afar, the race has a very impressive roll call of preceding champions such as Desert Orchid, Sprinter Sacre, Moscow Flyer (who passed away aged 22 in 2016), and Kauto Star, the latter of whom is the most successful runner in the race’s history. Unlike the common myth, this race is not a renamed version of the Sandown Pattern Chase, but rather the Benson & Hedges Gold Cup, which was also known as the Mecca Bookmakers' Handicap Chase and the Tingle Creek Handicap Chase. The latter was won by Tingle Creek himself in 1973.

Tingle Creek ran in the Sandown Handicap Pattern Chase six consecutive years, winning three times and coming runner-up in the other three. Amazingly, the horse broke the track record every time he won. His trainer was Tom Jones and he had three regular jockeys in the UK: Steve Smith, Ian Watkinson and David Mould. He retired at Jones's stable, and would be paraded before his own race each year at Sandown before passing away peacefully in 1996, at 30 years of age.

From 1999 through 2001, Flagship Uberalles, the race’s most successful ever horse, won the Tingle Creek Chase three years in a row.
