The Betfair Tingle Creek Chase is the highlight of a two-day winter festival at Sandown in Surrey, England. Races are staged over both the Friday and Saturday in early December, with the Grade I Betfair Tingle Creek Chase run on the Saturday. The signature race is a national hunt steeplechase that takes place over 1 mile, 7 furlongs and 119 yards. Horses of both sexes can enter, but must be four years or older.

The race is staged over the racecourse’s right-handed track and offers up a prize fund of £150,000 – £85,245 of which is handed to the winner. The race takes its name from the 1970s super star race horse, Tingle Creek, who lit up British horse racing in his time. The dazzling chestnut, who had a white face and noseband, never fell in seven seasons, and won 23 of his 52 races.

The 2022 iteration of the Tingle Creek Chase will run at 3.00pm GMT on December 3rd at Sandown Park. The Group 1 race promises a fierce showdown from the best chasers aged four years or more on the National Hunt, with The Esher Course in Surrey providing the perfect venue for horses, jockeys, trainers, and owners vying to win the prestigious crown.

Tingle Creek Chase Betting Tips & Predictions 2022

  • List Icon

Defending champion Greaneteen is the favourite to win the Tingle Creek Chase for a second year in a row. Paul Nicholls’ charge put down a fine performance in the race last season, defeating his nearest rival Hitman by five-and-a-half lengths. Greaneteen is a horse that loves racing at Sandown Park, winning twice at the venue last season as he also triumphed in the bet365 Celebration Chase.

  • List Icon

His form elsewhere in the 2021/22 campaign was slightly underwhelming, though, losing out to Shishkin in the Desert Orchid Chase at Kempton Park. The two horses will face off against in a tense contest at Sandown Park, where Nicholls’ charge just might have the edge after making an impressive start to his season at Exeter in the Haldon Gold Cup to win by a dominant margin. Greaneteen has a price of 13/8, which is not fantastic value, but you cannot deny his form at Sandown.

  • List Icon

Shishkin will aim to emulate his performance from Kempton Park in the Desert Orchid Chase to defeat Greaneteen. The Irish thoroughbred has a point to prove in the race after his outstanding run of victories came to a crashing halt at the Champion Chase at Cheltenham Festival in March, when he was pulled up. His great rival Energumene won the battle after Nicky Henderson’s charge had previously won a tight contest at the Clarence House Chase. Shishkin will have to come out firing to beat a horse in form in Greaneteen. At his best, he is a stronger competitor, but, as previously mentioned, Greaneteen does love Sandown. Approach the 2/1 odds with caution.

  • List Icon

Edwardstone had a great record entering the Arkle Chase at Cheltenham, although pundits were not quite sure whether he had the race in him to defeat the Willie Mullins horses. He proved them all wrong with a brilliant run to win the event, but then took a step back at Aintree to end the campaign to lose to Gentleman De Mee. Alan King will be on the spot to see if his charge can take the step up in class, but with odds of 3/1, Edwardstone may not be enticing enough as a prospect, especially when pit against two quality operators in Greaneteen and Shishkin.

  • List Icon

Ferny Hollow has a lot of pedigree, but has been out for almost a year due to injury. Willie Mullins’ charge rides a three-race winning streak into the race, although the last of those came at Leopardstown in December 2021 in Racing Post Novice Chase. There is a lot to like about the seven-year-old, especially out of Mullins’ yard. That said, the Irishman does not have the best record in the Tingle Creek Chase, and the odds of 13/2 are not enough to convince that he could beat out horses that are in form and established chasers.

  • List Icon

Gentleman De Mee did end the last campaign with a great win over Edwardstone at the Maghull Novices’ Chase. The French thoroughbred was seemingly on the rise, but has started the new season poorly, unseating his rider in his first race of the term at Naas.

  • List Icon

Henry De Bromhead brings Captain Guinness into the race fresh off a win at the Sean P. Muldoon & Patrick F. Gormley Fortria Chase at Navan. De Bromhead has had the Midas touch at recent big races, and Captain Guinness could be the outsider to watch, worth a shout with an each-way bet at 14/1 after finishing third in the event last year.

Win the Race Betting

With this bet, punters simply need to pick the winning horse to bet on. The best way to do this is to make sure that you fully understand horse racing and know how to read the form. If you're still new to all this or need to refresh your memory, check out our horse racing beginners' guide. From there, you might be able to craft an idea as to whether or not a particular horse enjoys certain types of turf conditions. Remember, this is early December in the UK, so the soil is likely to be soft or possibly firm.

Best Tingle Creek Chase betting site for Race Winner: Betfair

Forecast Betting

Forecast betting is where punters aim to correctly predict the first two horses to cross the line in a nominated race, which, in this case, is the Betfair Tingle Creek Chase. To win the bet, the horses must finish in the exact order that the punter predicted – otherwise, the bet will fail. To get around this, many choose to place a reverse forecast which, for double the stake, allows for the same two horses to come home in either order.

Double Bet Betting

You could, as always, pick the winner and double it up with the winner of any other race you like. This way, one winning bet makes the stake for the next bet and, for the price of one bet, you could have yourself a nice pay day – should both horses win.

Of course, there is no need to stop there. You can also pick three horses for a treble or as many as you like for higher accumulators or other multiple variant bets.

Placepot Betting

Because the Tingle Creek takes place over two days, bettors have the option to place a Placepot bet on either or both days. Placepots are designed to take in an entire day’s race card and always max out at six races. Because of this, if there are seven races on the card, as is the case on the Tingle Creek Saturday, then a Placepot bet will apply to the opening six races only.

With this bet, punters pick a selection in each of the day’s races that they believe will finish among the places. To win the bet, you must get a placed selection of each leg of the Placepot, which will then pay out at a Tote declared amount relevant to a single £1.

Named after the legendary 1970s National Hunt racehorse, the Betfair Tingle Creek Chase was first held in 1979, with the eponymous horse having enjoyed a lot of success at Sandown Park. Originally designated as a handicap, the race was not originally a Grade I, but was upgraded to that status in 1994.

Attracting top equine talent from far and wide, the Tingle Creek Chase has a very impressive roll call of preceding champions such as Desert Orchid, Sprinter Sacre, Moscow Flyer (who passed away aged 22 in 2016), and Kauto Star, the latter of whom is the most successful runner in the race’s history. Unlike the common myth, this race is not a renamed version of the Sandown Pattern Chase, but rather the Benson & Hedges Gold Cup, which was also known as the Mecca Bookmakers' Handicap Chase and the Tingle Creek Handicap Chase. The latter was won by Tingle Creek himself in 1973.

Tingle Creek ran in the Sandown Handicap Pattern Chase for six consecutive years, winning three times and coming runner-up in the other three, and breaking the track record every time he won. His trainer was Tom Jones and he had three regular jockeys in the UK: Steve Smith, Ian Watkinson, and David Mould. He retired at Jones's stable, and would be paraded before his own race each year at Sandown before passing away peacefully in 1996, at 30 years of age.

From 1999 through 2001, Flagship Uberalles, the race’s most successful ever horse, won the Tingle Creek Chase three years in a row. In 2021, Bryony Frost became the first female jockey to win the event by steering Greaneteen to victory.
