Russell Martin’s tenure at Rangers looks to be under threat following another sub-par display in the 2-0 defeat at home to Hearts. The bookies are sharpening their knives over his impending exit, with the next Rangers manager odds market buzzing with potential replacements.

Martin has been in charge for a little over three chaotic months, but has failed to win over Gers fans. Languishing tenth in the league, with no wins, four draws and one defeat from five games, it’s their worst league start for 47 years.

Saturday’s rout at Ibrox felt like the final nail in the coffin. Sky Sports’ Kris Boyd lambasted that there was “no way back” for Martin, who admitted his side looked “scared” at times during the game. A worrying admission for any manager.

A 9-1 aggregate loss in the Champions League Qualifiers to Club Brugge (including a 6-0 away drubbing) was hugely damaging, not just from a competitive standpoint, but also financially.

Ongoing player rifts with Nicolas Raskin and Hamza Igamane haven’t helped, with the latter refusing to come on at St Mirren before being sold to Lille for £10.4m. Fans voiced their frustrations on Saturday with chants of “you’re getting sacked in the morning”, which means the writing is very much on the wall for Martin's exit.

But who’s next? BetVictor is the first to jump on the next Rangers manager odds, and have opened with former Everton boss Sean Dyche. Other candidates include a return to Ibrox for Steven Gerrard and José Mourinho to land his first job since leaving Fenerbahçe earlier this month.

Dyche Another Day: Rangers’ Licence to Stabilise

Sean Dyche has opened as an early favourite in the market, priced at 3/1 to take charge at Ibrox should Russell Martin exit. He’s been out of work since being sacked by Everton in January 2025 and would be a lead target for chairman Andrew Cavenagh.

If they could sell the vision to Dyche, this would be a headline appointment. He’s an organiser, culture-builder and proven firefighter, which at this stage, is just the tonic needed. His role will be to stabilise the club and get them back up the league, something that Dyche would undoubtedly back himself to do.

The question is whether he’s holding out for a return to the Premier League. We’re moving into prime silly season for the manager merry-go-round, as club owners panic after poor starts, so opportunities will arise.

Next Rangers manager odds of 3/1 feel about right rather than generous. It’s a big club, and Dyche will likely want to be back in work sooner rather than later. There’s not a ton in the way of value here, and we think Dyche will hold out for a Premier League club, meaning there’s better value in alternative picks.

Déjà Blue: Stevie G’s Second Coming?

Steven Gerrard to return to Ibrox has opened at 7/2, just a hair behind Dyche. He left his role as head of Al-Ettifaq in January 2025 and has since been out of work, moonlighting as a pundit in the meantime.

He knows only too well the pressures that come with the job, and he will have legendary status following his league title success in 2020-21, halting Celtic’s run of nine straight Scottish Premier League titles.

Sentiment will drive bets for Gerrard’s return, but there’s weight to this move. He’s always spoken about his fondness for his time in Glasgow, and you do get the feeling that he could be up for a return.

Like Dyche, he could, however, be holding out for a Premier League return. He struggled at Aston Villa, lasting less than a year, and he’s the type who will want to make amends for this. The board might be looking for a fresh start as well, meaning 7/2 looks fair, rather than packed with value.

Mou Money, Mou Problems: The Cost of a José Gamble

José Mourinho would be the dream appointment for Cavenagh. A truly box-office legend of the sport, he’d come in and provide much-needed short-term galvanising, with a European pedigree that eclipses all of the candidates in the running.

Sacked by Fenerbahçe in August 2025, this would be the ultimate out of the frying pan, into the fire scenario that Mourinho seems to revel in. He’d hold no punches and likely do a good job of getting the club back on track.

Money will play a role in this deal, and it could be the sticking point. He’ll want big bucks, and Rangers are working with a shoestring budget. At 6/1, this isn’t a deal that we think will happen, as much as it would be fun seeing Mourinho complain about synthetic surfaces at Falkirk away.

Carrick On Wayward Son? Rangers Could Eye a Long-Term Project

Rangers could do a lot worse than tap into the skillset of one of the finest up-and-coming managers in the UK. Michael Carrick’s stock continues to rise, after taking Middlesbrough to the 2023 Championship play-offs and, in the following season, to the Carabao Cup semi-final.

What’s impressive is that Carrick’s achievements have been on the back of very little financial investment, working with young players and developing talents such as Morgan Rogers, who is now flourishing with Aston Villa and England.

He’s out of work, so no compensation will be needed, and he’ll command a much lower salary than the three aforementioned. At 8/1, this is a big price and is the best pick for a long-term project coach who can revitalise the club to get them back competing at the top of the league and in Europe.
