Michael Flynn has been sacked by League Two Cheltenham Town, the club has confirmed. A grim start to the 2025/26 has seen the Robins pick up just four points from their opening nine games, and following a 3-0 defeat at home to Oldham on Saturday, the board decided enough was enough as the next Cheltenham Town manager odds go live.

Michael Flynn sacked as Cheltenham Town manager as search starts for replacement

It’s been a turbulent few days at Whaddon Road following the midweek resignation of director of football, Gary Johnson, in a decision that Flynn admitted “came as a surprise”. Flynn has, for the most part, done well for the club, steadying the team to a mid-table reset in 2024/25, backing that up with an EFL Trophy quarter-final.

However, seven defeats in nine for 2025/26 have brought insurmountable pressure on his role, and he admitted after Saturday’s defeat that “performances like this get you the sack”. Later that evening, the board confirmed Flynn’s fears by relieving him of his duties as the search started for the next Cheltenham Town manager.

Steve Cotterill

Steve Cotterill is the bookies' favourite, priced 1/2 with BetVictor, to make a return to Whaddon Road some 28 years after his first managerial stint there. He led the team to the FA Trophy in 1998, Conference Title in 1999 and promotion via the play-offs in 2002. He’s a bona fide Robin and knows what it takes to get a tune out of a club where he once played his trade as a budding centre-forward in 1986.

His resume is vast, and after leaving his role at the helm of Forest Green Rovers in June 2025, he would be an ideal replacement for Flynn to try to save Cheltenham Town from relegation. At 61, this might be a short-term to mid-term project for Cotterill, and the board will no doubt take this into consideration. But the reality is that he’s got the most experience on the shortlist and will be a popular appointment with the fans.

Next Cheltenham Town manager odds of 1/2 are short, but this move makes sense for both parties, and even at this price, there is enough value for us to get excited about.

Jon Brady

Jon Brady has been out of work since resigning at Northampton Town in December 2024. He was openly reflective about getting back into management this summer, but has yet to find a potential suitor.

Brady brings in a ton of League Two experience and, most notably, a promotion with Northampton Town in 2023. He had them settled as a mid-table League One side and carved a clear identity for the club with a front-foot, high work rate side that was keen to create pathways for young players to get first team experience.

The stumbling block with Brady, and why we think this move won’t develop, comes down to budget. Or lack of it. He will want control and assurance that there is money to spend, but the owner, Mike Garlick, can’t offer that. At 3/1 to take charge, we’d rather swerve this, favouring a move for Cotterill instead.

Adam Hinshelwood

Former York City boss Adam Hinshelwood is priced at 6/1 to be the next Cheltenham Town manager. This move appears to be a total non-starter, given that Hinshelwood has no experience in League Two and the Robins are far from in a position to gamble with new managerial talent. With Cotterill and Brady both viable options, we’d be shocked to see them opt for an unproven Hinshelwood at this time.
