Arguably, the most prestigious individual prize at the 2026 World Cup is the Golden Ball winner. It’s a betting market that I love to attack each time it lands, as the odds for the winner generally start at around 10/1 and up, there’s loads of value. I’ve got three Golden Ball betting tips for you below and a little bit of sauce about why they’ve made the grade.

What is the World Cup Golden Ball?

Basically, the World Cup Golden Ball is awarded to the tournament's best player. It’s not necessarily the top scorer, although that does help some of the time, but more players who’ve had a significant influence on helping their nation progress.

It’s awarded by FIFA’s Technical Study Group – whoever they are – who analyse data, video and tactical observations to determine who is best. It’s subjective, so it can make it harder to call, but you can generally have a feel for who might be leading the running based on past winners.

2026 World Cup Golden Ball Betting Tips

I’ve got three picks who I think offer good value for the Golden Ball market this year. As you can see, since 1982, all winners have at least made the semi-final, so I’m taking that into consideration here.

Bet 1: Michael Olise – France

I wouldn’t say that Michael Olise has flown under the radar coming into the 2026 World Cup, but he certainly doesn’t get the column space that the likes of Laine Yamal, Harry Kane and Kylian Mbappe do.

That said, he’s one of the favourites for the Golden Ball, and I think justifiably so. He’s had an incredible season with Bayern Munich, fully silencing the critics who questioned whether he could make the step up from Crystal Palace.

With 15 goals and 19 assists, it’s quite the output for one of the most exciting players in the world right now. He’s going to form a formidable partnership with Kylian Mbappe in that French side, and for me, they’re the ones to beat.

His World Cup odds of 10/1, even though he’s one of the favourites, look generous and would be my NAP for the Golden Ball. Oh, and he’s just bagged a hat-trick in France’s final warm-up game against Northern Ireland as well, which cements my pick even more.

Bet 2: Kylian Mbappe – France

Logic would suggest that, if I think France are going to avenge the ghosts of four years ago losing on penalties to Argentina, and Olise does not win the Golden Ball, my next pick would be a certain Mr Mbappe.

To think that Mbappe is still only 27 years old, about to take part in his third World Cup and needs just four goals to be tied as the top goalscorer of all time, is pretty wild.

He’s had a turbulent year at Real Madrid, with large segments of the fanbase deciding it’s his turn to be the scapegoat for underperforming this season, but there’s no better stage than to stick it to the haters than the biggest stage, is there?

It would be typical Mbappe to go and tear this tournament apart, and I couldn’t begrudge anyone getting involved at 10/1 for the Golden Ball.

Bet 3: Bruno Fernandes – Portugal

I wanted to add someone who is a little more, outside the box, shall we say. There were a few in the running, such as Spain’s Pedri and Lamine Yamal, Vinicius Junior for Brazil, Ferreira Vitinha for Portugal, and even our very own Declan Rice and Harry Kane.

But Bruno Fernandes just gets the nod at 20/1 (check out the latest World Cup betting offers for any price boosts). The Portuguese midfielder has been in fine form for Manchester United, breaking the record for most assists in a season and helping Man Utd to somehow finish third in the league.

Whether Portugal can win it all, I’m not so sure, but they’re one of those teams that no one will want to play. Cristiano Ronaldo will be involved at some point, walking frame and all, but it’s Bruno who holds the key for them now.

A good run to the semi’s, a couple of goals and assists, and dragging them through games they should probably lose, might be enough, you know. I’d take Olise and Mbappe over him every day of the week and twice on Tuesday, but for an outside pick, he’s the next cab off the rank for me.
