My Friday horse racing tips concern runners at Sandown and Ascot, but I’m already looking forward to Saturday’s King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes, one of the biggest races of the season. Over the weekend, we have a chance to build up our profits for one of the biggest festivals of the year, Glorious Goodwood, which comes next week.

Make sure you’re signed up for our free Glorious Goodwood Cheat Sheet, landing on Tuesday morning with exclusive betting insight.

You can back these horses with Betfred, one of our best horse racing betting sites.

With no terrestrial television action, we’re short on early odds for today's horse racing tips. No matter. I’d suggest joining Betfred now, and grabbing the odds when available, or backing these horses from 8:00am on Friday to take advantage of best odds guaranteed. Take the odds offered, and if your horse wins at a bigger SP, you are paid at the higher price.

Friday Best Bet

Study Of Words – 4:05 Ascot

The nap of the day runs on Ascot’s afternoon card in the mile-and-a-half handicap. Al Azd is the chief opposition having gone so well at the royal meeting, but he’s covered some miles this season already and is a little exposed.

Merveilleux Lapin is a solid type, a decent each-way play, but the big dog for me is Charlie Appleby’s Study Of Words, ridden by title-chasing jockey Billy Loughnane.

This impeccably bred Frankel/Dubawi cross produced the wow factor last autumn when winning his maiden by 15 lengths. This year, there was insufficient pace for him when he was third on his handicap debut, and he didn’t want the extended mile and three quarters last time out.

He was favourite for both of those races, and there’s a proper beast in there somewhere. He is very well handicapped against this field, and with the cheekpieces removed as he goes down in trip, he can get the job done.

Why I’m Backing Study Of Words

  • List Icon

Potential prices of 9/2 or 5/1 would present genuine value

  • List Icon

Top pedigree, owner, trainer, and jockey

  • List Icon

Has the ideal conditions for the first time this season

Friday’s Next Best Bet

Cyrano De Bergerac – 6:55 Sandown

Another of the best horse racing tips today represents the same ownership as Study Of Words in the shape of Godolphin. This time, the horse in question is trained by John & Thady Gosden, and he makes his first handicap start.

Three-year-old Cyrano De Bergerac, son of John Gosden’s former stable star Palace Pier, won easily against limited opposition last time out in preparation for this. That has helped to keep his handicap rating down, and he looks too good for Hot And Cold of Sir Mark Prescott’s yard.

At 6/4 in the betting forecast I don’t expect anything massive, but this task should not be in any way beyond him.

Why I’m Backing Cyrano De Bergerac

  • List Icon

Solid form in maidens and novices in prep for his handicap bow

  • List Icon

First foal of French Polish, who improved plenty between runs as a 3yo

  • List Icon

Young apprentice Luke Catton takes off a handy 3lbs

Friday Value Bet

Lorca’s Waltz – 7:30 Sandown

The last of my horse racing betting tips for Friday comes in Sandown’s one-mile handicap. Lorca’s Waltz, representing the King, trainer William Haggas, and jockey Tom Marquand, looks in good nick for his first handicap run.

Having fought hard to win his maiden at Beverley, the three-year-old has wisely been given enough time between races by Haggas, and he can show himself to be a bigger, stronger specimen now. Cristo is consistent, including round here, so he’s a good yardstick, but our lad looks better off at the weights.

A tissue price of 11/4 looks good to me. Something like this when the odds open up would be solid, considering the relative lack of opposition.

Why I’m Backing Lorca’s Waltz

  • List Icon

    Represents top connections

  • List Icon

Well treated for his first run in a handicap

  • List Icon

Limited opponents are more exposed than him

Build Your Betting Bank Before Goodwood

Before last weekend, my ‘best bet’ and ‘next best’ runners were going at 50% for July, producing a return on investment of 91%. On Friday, Prizeland (6/1) and Nabati (3/1) both finished second. Wins for those two would have given this table a very different look and yeah, there was some choice language around here!

Goodwood starts on Tuesday, and I’m looking to grow my betting pot across today’s runners, and via my Saturday horse racing bets featuring the King George.
