England face a testing task in the last 16 as they travel to the Azteca Stadium, the scene of their 1986 exit to Argentina, to face co-hosts Mexico. It is not just memories of Diego Maradona that will be haunting England fans in the buildup. Mexico are a very good side with a phenomenal record at Estadio Azteca with only two defeats in 89 competitive internationals. A huge factor in this is the altitude; Mexico City is approximately 2,240 metres above sea level which means that if England are to make the quarterfinals, they will be doing it the hard way. I feel this one is too close to call, so I have avoided predicting a winner when putting together my 34/5 boosted bet builder.

Under 3.5 Goals
I don’t want to be negative about Thomas Tuchel’s side’s chances, but England have struggled against low blocks and well drilled defences. Mexico are extremely solid at the back having kept a clean sheet in all four of their matches in the World Cup so far. On the plus side, the co-hosts have a very low xG. Our Kickform stats show that all of Mexico’s matches and 75% of England’s games have seen less than four goals. In short, neither team will give too much away, and I am expecting it to be tight. The odds for this bet on their own are not great, but it is a solid way to kick off the bet builder.
BTTS: Yes
While I would be most surprised to see four goals or more, I definitely do not envisage a blank scoresheet. It is a big ask to shut Mexico out at the Azteca Stadium, and England have enough proven game-changers to make me think that they will find a way through, even if it might not be pretty. Despite their problems against low blocks, the Three Lions have had xGs of 2.8, 1.29, 1.4, and 2.04 in their four matches, and I back them to convert at least one chance. The World Cup betting odds of evens for BTTS make this a great second wager.
Jude Bellingham 2+ Shots
Jude Bellingham has made a difference in the final third throughout the tournament and has consistently managed to get shots away. The Real Madrid star has had nine shots in four matches, with six shots on target. Bellingham has had nine shots overall at an average of 2.58 per 90 minutes. I think he will have at least two shots against Mexico.
Julian Quinones 2+ Shots
Julian Quinones has impressed since the very start of the tournament. He scored the first goal of the 2026 World Cup when he was on target inside 10 minutes against South Africa. He has gone on to score another two goals and bag an assist and, as an attacker who starts on the left and cuts in, could get a lot of joy considering England’s injury woes at right-back. Quinones has averaged 2.97 shots per 90 minutes throughout the tournament, and I believe that he will shoot at least twice in this one.
