Palmeiras vs Al Ahly Cairo – Over 2.5 Goals
If Gary Barlow were a sports reporter, he’d suggest things can only get better in Group A as both games failed to produce a single goal in the opening matches.
If truth be told, it wasn’t a fair reflection of either game, and both of today’s opponents, Palmeiras and Al Ahly Cairo, will rue chances missed that saw them each hover around the 2.00 xG mark without anything to show for it.
We saw enough in both games to realise they both offer a significant attacking threat. Trezeguet’s penalty miss for Al Ahly was a huge opportunity squandered, but aside from that, he worked superbly well as part of an exciting front three alongside Ali and Ashour.
Palmeiras do things a little differently, and their more controlled build-up play brings midfielders Anderson, Piquerez and Rios into the game. Frontman Roque had a quiet opener, so he needs to improve tonight to get something from the game.
It’s one of those fixtures where the game just needs that opening goal, and the floodgates will open. Over 2.5 at even money is the first of today’s Club World Cup tips.
Inter Miami vs FC Porto – Inter Miami to Win
In a week where Inter Miami owner David Beckham was informed that he would be knighted for services to sport and charity, it was an opening night to forget for his team on the pitch, as they struggled to break down a dogged Al Ahly team.
A gulf in class between the MLS and more established leagues like the Egyptian Premier League was clear for all to see in the opening stages of the game. But they grew into the game, which was impressive to see.
Things won’t get any easier against FC Porto for Messi and his minions. The thirty-time Primeira Liga champions are the highest-ranked team in the group, but they flattered to deceive in their opener versus Palmeiras.
They were out xG’d by 2.08 to 0.78 and dominated in vital statistics like total shots, shots on target, big chances created, accurate passes, total passes and possession.
Porto looked like a team that really didn’t want to be there after a long season. Inter Miami have the chance to pounce, and odds of 5/2 for a team that includes the likes of Messi and Suarez look good enough value to get involved.
Seattle Sounders FC vs Atlético Madrid – Over 2.5 Goals
Seattle will have left the stadium after their 2-1 opening round defeat to Botafogo RJ, thinking what on earth happened?
Aside from the opening 30 minutes, it was a game they dominated and were unlucky not to get at least a point from. Their xG of 2.20, compared to 0.91, provides a brief overview, but the Sounders were superb in transition and a credit to the MLS in terms of style alone.
Atletico Madrid will pose a much sterner task. The La Liga outfit got their churros well and truly handed to them by PSG, so it’s another must-win game for both teams.
Both games covered the over 2.5 goals market in their opener, albeit on the back of defeats, but at odds of 21/20, it looks like the value play here once again. If Atletico get going, then they can cover the line on their own with a resounding win, so we’re happy to take a punt on this one.
PSG vs Botafogo – PSG to Win -1.5 Asian Handicap
It feels like we’re heading into a dominant era with PSG. For years, we’ve been wondering when things will finally click, and after spending billions of euros on the best players in the world, it turns out an investment in youth was the right play all along.
Their win over Atletico was imposing. Sure, Lenglet’s red card on 77 minutes made it easier than it might have been in the last 15 minutes or so, but it didn’t change the course of the result as they were rarely out of second gear at 2-0 before that.
Botafogo rode their luck against Seattle, but they won’t get the same luxuries against the current Champions League winners.
It’s a matter of by how many, and odds of around 8/11 on -1.5 on the Asian Handicap look superb value.
