HIGHLAND CRYSTAL, 1:20 (Triumph Hurdle) – 16/1 with Ladbrokes

It’s difficult to judge the four-year-olds, our main contenders having only been seen in a handful of races over hurdles. With their form not settled and their full ability not yet known, unusual results can be witnessed. We’re banking on a strange result – as far as the bookies are concerned at least.

On our numbers, 16/1 shot Highland Crystal could actually be clear of this field. Based on her progression and her form with Tuesday Cheltenham winner Saratoga, all things point to a big performance from Gordon Elliott’s mare.

She’s handled by a top trainer and ridden by an excellent jockey in Jack Kennedy, which means more boxes ticked. The key thing here is the 7lbs she receives from the males, with the importance of racing weight something we often mention on our Saturday horse racing tips page. This could be one of the top Cheltenham dark horses of the week.

PANIC ATTACK, 2:40 (Mares’ Chase) – 4/1 with 10bet

Willie Mullins’ Dinoblue won this race last year in style, and her recent form suggests she is primed for another good showing. She’s not quite in Lossiemouth territory, and without that invincible feel, she remains vulnerable to an improver. We think we’ve found the right one.

The only thing strange to us is that the improvement being shown by our selection, Panic Attack, is coming when she has reached ten years old. That is unusual, but her form is rock-solid, and while she has something to find on official ratings, her latest win was achieved in an absolute canter. She’s progressing at a rate of knots, gets 3lbs from Dinoblue, and deserves to be the second of our Cheltenham Festival picks.

DOCTOR STEINBERG, 3:20 (Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle) – 4/1 with Coral

Many a punter has waited for the Festival in order to back Doctor Steinberg. The surprise is that he opened up at 4/1. Willie Mullins’ six-year-old is three from three over hurdles, with his latest win coming at Grade 1 level over two miles, six furlongs.

We have no doubt that he will improve again over this three-mile trip, and really should have too much for The Passing Wife, Espresso Milan and Thedeviluno. He’s done enough to be our Friday Cheltenham NAP of the day.

JANGO BAIE, 4:00 (Cheltenham Gold Cup) – 4/1 with bet365

This is the one we’ve been waiting for. The Gold Cup is the second biggest betting race in Britain behind the Grand National at Aintree, and is actually number one in terms of prestige on the National Hunt scene. This is what the jumps season all comes down to for trainers, jockeys, and owners. It means the world.

Cheltenham Festival predictions are hard enough, but the Gold Cup is something else. Each of the 11 runners has been primed to peak at this very moment, and it’s up to us to evaluate what that really means for each of them.

Inothewayurthinking won it last year, but he is simply not in the same form now. Gaelic Warrior (Willie Mullins) has been the one for money, but we have liked Nicky Henderson’s Jango Baie for this race all season, and we’re sticking with him.

Our ratings put Nico de Boinville’s mount 3lbs ahead of The Jukebox Man, who beat him at Kempton, and 4lbs ahead of Gaelic Warrior who was also in that race. That makes the King George Chase the key form race, and looking at the way Jango Baie finished that event, that form and our evaluation of it looks reliable.

It is no surprise that our big three also form the bookies’ top trio, and while Haiti Couleurs is admirable and is interesting in behind them, nothing should be coming out of the pack and causing a big surprise.

He didn’t get going early enough in the King George, only going down by a half-length, but now, Jango should be unchained. He gets a quarter of a mile further and that Cheltenham hill in which to either pull away, or claw back his rivals if necessary.

The 4/1 is provided by bet365, who have Super Boosts available all week at the Festival. They are also offering Winnings Boosts on Friday, giving you 25% extra.
