It’s the final major of the year, and even though there’s a lot of golf still to play, it’s time to go big or go home. So, after doing a bit of research and trawling the bookies, I’ve found one of the biggest Open Championship betting tips you’ll see anywhere: a 24/1 accumulator.

You read that right. We’re taking on the 72-hole matchbet market with Betfred and have five picks that I think are bankers for the week ahead.

How Betfred's Matchbet works

A Matchbet is a 72-hole three-way market where you bet on theoretical match-ups set up by the bookmaker. The winner is the player with the lowest score through 72 holes. If a player misses the cut, they are deemed the loser. If both players miss the cut, the player with the lowest score wins. Ties are an option in the market, so players with the same score can be tied.

Bet 1: Chris Gotterup to Beat Collin Morikawa

Given that I’ve backed Chris Gotterup as one of my The Open Championship golf tips, I have to take him on to beat Collin Morikawa head-to-head. I love where his game is right now, and he had a sniff at a late run last week at the Scottish Open.

This will be only his second Open Championship, after finishing third in his debut at Royal Portrush in 2025, but it’s a tournament perfectly set up for him. He’s a feel player, and you need that around places like Royal Birkdale, which should prove to be an advantage.

Morikawa is playing decently, but I think his decision to miss the Scottish Open will backfire. Of course, he’s already had a taste of the Claret Jug, but his game is nowhere near the consistency of 2021, and Gotterup at even money is the pick of the bunch.

Bet 2: Alex Fitzpatrick to Beat Joaquin Niemann

There’s an argument that Alex and his brother, Matt Fitzpatrick, are two of the best players in the world right now. For Alex, it’s been a dream three months, securing his PGA Tour card, getting his first win and then following that up with five top-20 finishes in his next six events.

For Joaquin Niemann, he might be cleaning up on LIV Golf, but he can’t figure out how to translate that to the biggest stage in the majors. Two top-10 finishes in 28 major starts is not good, and The Open has not been kind, missing three cuts in six starts.

It’s pretty wild that Fitzpatrick is the favourite to win this one, but it says a lot about how each player handles the pressure when asked to step up.

Bet 3: Justin Thomas to Beat Jordan Spieth

A Matchup for my fellow golf sickos reading this. It wasn’t all that long ago that these two were among the best players in the world. Now, Thomas is clinging to a spot in the top-20, and Spieth has drifted outside of the top-50.

I’ve been watching quite a bit of the practice rounds on various social media outlets, and Spieth’s game does not look to be in the sort of shape needed to compete at majors. He sprayed three balls off the Par 4 8th hole, and each went in a different direction. Golfers will always say that, when they play their best, they have a consistent miss. For Spieth, it could go anywhere right now, and it’s actually sad to see, even if he did win here back in 2017.

For Thomas he’s shown a lot of fight in 2026. He’s had top-20 finishes in five of his last six starts, and it’s that consistency that makes him good value at 4/5 with the best betting sites to beat Spieth.

Bet 4: Robert MacIntyre to Beat Cameron Young

There will be a lot of people backing Robert MacIntyre this week, and rightly so. He loves the links and played fantastically well for much of last week’s Scottish Open, finishing in a tie for third.

I think there are questions about whether he can win The Open Championship mentally, but you’d have to say that he’s undoubtedly got the game for it.

I’ve picked him this week to better Cameron Young as his form is a little concerning. Young has finished outside the top-40 in each of his last three starts, and the purple patch of the spring swing seems to be fading quickly.

MacIntyre is the favourite at 8/11, but he’s still good value at that price.

Bet 5: Rory McIlroy to Beat Scottie Scheffler

And now for the big one. How much you can read into Scottie Scheffler’s missed cut at the Scottish Open last week, I’m not sure. But it’s clearly less than ideal coming into Royal Birkdale. Will it light a fire or are we going to start to see the form that has him flirting with greatness fizzle out?

Time will tell, but Rory McIlroy, for me, is one to watch this week. He should have been in contention at the Renaissance Club, but for a strange third round where he played himself out of it. He rallied, as he always does, for another top-10, but that will all be as part of a warm-up this week.

It will be intriguing to see how Scottie bounces back after the first bit of adversity since his meteoric rise, and I like Rory’s chances of getting the knockers over him. It feels like a coin-flip market, so getting 23/20 for McIlroy to beat him looks like huge value and is the final pick for my Open Championship acca bet.
