The Ebor Festival is far too good to waste time easing ourselves in, so my York Ebor Festival day 1 tips feature three bets on a cracking Wednesday card. The Juddmonte International is the headline act and I’m getting involved there, while the Great Voltigeur Stakes also makes the betting slip – and provides my NAP.
There’s plenty more to get stuck into besides, but from all the York racing tips today, these are the three horses I reckon are worth parting with a few quid for.
Wednesday Quick View

My top three bets for Wednesday at York include a slightly different angle on the Juddmonte International. William Hill are betting without the favourite, which conveniently removes Ombudsman from the equation and opens up a more interesting market. Maltese Cross in the Great Voltigeur is my nap of the day.
The prices on my horse racing tips today were provided by Betfred and William Hill, two of our best horse racing betting sites. You’ll find my full preview and reasoning for each bet below.
York NAP of the Day
Maltese Cross – 3:00 (Great Voltigeur Stakes)
The Great Voltigeur is a cracking Group 2 over just shy of a mile and a half, as well as an important trial for races such as the St Leger and even the Arc.
My nap is William Haggas’ Maltese Cross, ridden by Tom Marquand. The Sea The Stars colt was second to reopposing Christmas Day in the Derby despite the race not really playing to his strengths, before improving plenty to win the Group 1 Grand Prix de Paris. He handles any ground and, for me, there’s still more under the bonnet.
Ryan Moore prefers Christmas Day to stablemate Pierre Bonnard, who receives 5lbs from the two principals, but Maltese Cross looks a real top-notcher in the making.
The Ebor itself will feature in my Saturday horse racing tips, but this is the first of my York Ebor Festival betting tips, and hopefully it’s the one that gets Wednesday off to a profitable start.
Why I’m Backing Maltese Cross
-
Has done nothing but improve this year
-
Strong stayer, despite possessing lots of class
-
Handles any ground and will relish York
York Ebor Festival Tips – My Next Best Bet
Item – 3:35 (Great Voltigeur – Without Ombudsman)
The £1.5m Juddmonte International is one of the best races in the world, and last year’s winner Ombudsman returns rated a world-leading 132, looking to become the first back-to-back winner in 30 years. He’s been backed from 11/10 to odds-on and, good as unbeaten Eclipse winner Constitution River is, I think the favourite will have too much for him.
It’ll be great for racing if he pulls away and wins this well. At that price though, I’m looking to remove him altogether from the best race at the 2026 Ebor Festival for betting purposes.
We’ve backed Item before on these pages, and Andrew Balding’s Frankel colt has won both the Dante and York Stakes over this course and distance in 2026. He hated conditions in the Derby but is otherwise unbeaten and looks ready for another career best.
Recently as short as 5/1 outright, William Hill now offer 7/2 for Item without Ombudsman in the race. He’s around 7/1 otherwise. That looks more than fair and makes Item one of the stronger Juddmonte International tips.
Why I’m Backing Item (Without Ombudsman)
-
Arguably ahead of where Constitution River was after 5 races
-
Could win this race anyway, but betting without Ombudsman adds insurance
-
Loves York – he’s 2 from 2 over the course and distance
York Horse Racing Tips – My Value Bet
Ruler’s Pride – 5:20 (Nursery Handicap)
My final bet comes in a maximum field of 22 for the closing six-furlong nursery, so nothing can possibly go wrong here! There’s pace right across the track, although I’d give the lower numbers a very slight advantage.
Dubai Champion has attracted support, The Dancing Pirate is solid, and Henley On Thames looks well handicapped. However, I reckon Ruler’s Pride is just as well treated and is a fair bit classier.
Karl Burke’s Wathnan Racing colt made a terrific debut before things went against him at Royal Ascot. He then drifted like a barge before running at Glorious Goodwood, but everything appears to be fine now.
I’ve got him down as a future Group horse, so a mark of 93 is very interesting. At a big price with William Hill, who offer free bets to new customers, Ruler’s Pride looks one of the best-value York Ebor Festival betting tips on Wednesday.
Why I’m Backing Ruler’s Pride
-
Group horse in a handicap – even in a nursery
-
Six furlongs at York should be perfect for him
-
Trainer Karl Burke and jockey James Doyle are both in great form
