Betting on Ebor Festival Races

My early Ebor Festival tips are based on the likelihood of at least good ground, perhaps quicker. The form is rock-solid at this stage of the season, with few surprises, at least in the Group 1 and Group 2 events. I’ve been checking out where the money seems to be heading for the feature races of the meeting, just to give you a heads up.

Ebor Festival Betting Odds – Juddmonte International

He’s a short enough price, but this world class race is all about Ombudsman. John & Thady Gosden’s son of Night Of Thunder finished as the joint second highest rated horse in the world last year with a rating of 128, gained when winning this race. That was after he took in the Coral-Eclipse at Sandown.

Ombudsman skipped the Sandown race this year, and comes to York rated a massive 132, highest in the world, having demolished his field at Royal Ascot. The each-way value probably sits with Item at around 10/1. Fancied for Derby, Item came back strongly over course and distance to win the York Stakes in July, and represents the sponsors, Juddmonte.

Ebor Festival Betting Odds – Great Voltigeur Stakes

This mile and a half race is run at Group 2 level. It’s a fine event in its own right, but often acts as a St Leger trial as well. Already Group 1 winners under weight penalties, it’s hard to know if Derby 1-2 Christmas Day and Maltese Cross will show up here. The ante-post value therefore lies elsewhere, though these two colts head the market at around 5/2 and 7/2 respectively.

Ebor Festival Betting Odds – Lowther Stakes

Libertango is a short priced favourite for the Lowther at around 7/4, just ahead of her old rival Senorita Bonita at 7/2. Those prices could prove to be a little false, with recent juvenile scorers Moonrise (9/2) and Wild Blossom (7/1) certainly worth another look.

Ebor Festival Betting Odds – Yorkshire Oaks

This market really depends on Kalpana. She’s now the King George winner, and surely the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe is heavily on the agenda for her, just as it is for Estrange, who challenges her at the top of the market. You can back these two at 5/2 and 11/4 respectively, but we don’t know how certain it is that either shows up.

The Yorkshire Oaks is a Group 1 event, so you’d hope they’ll both be on the Knavesmire come August 20. If they aren’t, then the odds for Johanna Walsh (5/1) will start to look big. If a bit of rain arrives in time, the 16/1 about Musidora winner Legacy Link will start to look very interesting too.

Ebor Festival Betting Odds – Lonsdale Cup

With his main rival in the stayers’ division, Scandinavia, not an intended runner here, good old Trawlerman (1/1) is a strong favourite. He’s not getting any younger though, and many will be looking to the likes of Caballo De Mar (5/1) for a bit of value. Of the outsiders, Amiloc will be of interest to people at around 12/1.

Ebor Festival Betting Odds – Gimcrack Stakes

The Gimcrack is an important two-year-old race, but one that doesn’t offer us guaranteed participants. Any ante-post betting in this one for a lot of punters will involve looking at the outsiders, such as Flann Sunna, Mrair, and Dubai Champion, who are all 10/1 and bigger.

Ebor Festival Betting Odds – Nunthorpe Stakes

This is one of the best five-furlong sprints in the world. The Nunthorpe betting this year is headed by Wesley Ward’s American challenger Bacio (7/2) at the ate-post stage. American Affair (Goodwood, 8/1), and Mission Central (Royal Ascot, 12/1) are both big festival five-furlong winners already and feature prominently. Night Raider (16/1) really is capable of much better and will also be of interest to many.

Ebor Festival Betting Odds – City of York Stakes

Upgraded last year to Group 1 status, this seven-furlong contest has become awfully important. In it, Notable Speech leads the way at 4/1, but he may have one-mile targets. If we can’t rely on him taking his chance, then perhaps a look at the bigger priced runners is in order, such as Talk Of New York (16/1), Paborus (20/1), or Qirat (25/1).

York Ebor Betting

The richest handicap race in Europe, and the one this entire festival is named after. The Ebor is special, and the current market is headed by the 2025 Cesarewitch winner Beylerbeyi at 12/1. Glorious Goodwood winner Hopewell Rock is interesting at 12/1, while Opportunity is still handicapped OK at 16/1. Aegean Price (20/1) would be very interesting if getting a run at the bottom of the weights.

Ebor Festival Day 1 Tips [Wednesday] – Juddmonte International Day

Derby runner-up Maltese Cross is a fascinating potential contender in the Great Voltigeur (3:00). He hasn’t worked since winning in France though, and it may be that he heads to the Prix Niel instead with the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe in mind. Without knowing what William Haggas intends to do, I’d leave this race alone at the ante-post stage, but I’ll be covering it in my horse racing bet previews during Ebor week.

The £1.5 million Juddmonte International (3:35) is not just the biggest race of the day, it’s one of the best in the world. Ombudsman has been kept nice and fresh for this one since becoming officially the world’s highest rated horse at Royal Ascot. He will take some stopping.

Ebor Festival Day 2 Tips [Thursday] – Yorkshire Oaks/Ladies Day

It’s all about the girls on Thursday. On Ladies Day, one of the big races is the Lowther Stakes (1:50), a juvenile fillies race over six furlongs. As soon as Senorita Bonita crossed the line to beat Libertango at Newmarket, I had this race in mind. It seems her connections did too.

The Group 1 Yorkshire Oaks is the feature at 3:35. There are variables in the race. Kalpana is top class but had to put it all in to win the King George, while Minnie Hauk is also outstanding but is perhaps better at a mile and a quarter. Johanna Walsh is also very solid, further muddying the waters.

This looks ripe therefore for a value each-way shout. It’s been a very hot summer, but there could be some much-needed rain heading York’s way before this meeting. With that in mind, I’m taking the 16/1 about Legacy Link, each-way. She won at York in the Musidora Stakes, before performing so well in the Oaks. John Gosden said Ascot came a little too quickly, and she needs some juice in the ground. She is a Group 1 filly, though.

Ebor Festival Day 3 Tips [Friday] – Nunthorpe Day

The Lonsdale Cup (2:25) is a Group 2, but still attracts all the usual Group 1 stayers. Trawlerman was unlucky when clashing with the loose horse in the Goodwood Cup, but we don’t have evidence that he isn’t regressing. At eight years old, that’s very possible.

I’m not taking evens about him ante-post, and I don’t like the 3lb penalty Caballo De Mar has to shoulder. With that, the early value is with Ralph Beckett’s Amiloc at 12/1.

The Nunthorpe Stakes (3:35) is the big Group 1 feature over five furlongs. It’s chock full of quality at this stage, but with her weight allowance, the time could be right now for flying French filly Reyevka, and she is the shout as one of my Ebor Festival Friday tips.

Ebor Festival Day 4 Tips [Saturday] – Ebor Handicap Day

The City of York Stakes (3:00) enters its second year as a Group 1. Purely on the grounds of value at this confusing early stage, the 25/1 on offer about recent course and distance winner Qirat is far too big. You can back him each-way.

Finally, we can look at Ebor betting. The big race goes off at 3:35, and of course is difficult to call at the ante-post stage. Aegean Prince (Charlie Appleby) is rated only 99, a little lower than ideal, but he needs only five horses to come out to get a run. He is very well handicapped, which counts for plenty, and the trainer can get them ready first time out. His 20/1 price in the Ebor Handicap betting is just too big at present.

Betting on Ebor Festival Races – Facts, Stats & Key Insights

I’m not usually big on trends, but occasionally they can be helpful. I’ve picked out some notable tendencies in the Juddmonte International, the best race at this meeting, and the Ebor Handicap, the big betting event on Saturday. These may help to produce my final York Ebor Festival horse racing tips.

Juddmonte International 10-Year Trends

So what do I glean from that? Well, this race is genuinely among the top five or so worldwide for quality. The fact that favourites, who have won a Group 1 and are rated 120+ tend to win this, says everything. There may be an each-way opportunity, but only very exceptional three-year-olds win it. These trends speak volumes about Ombudsman’s chance.

Ebor Handicap 10-Year Trends

We tend to find that those aged between four and six are the ones to concentrate on here. As well as this, and despite the reputation the Ebor has for being a highly competitive handicap, it seems only certain types win it.

Given that some horses in the current betting won’t run, therefore odds will shrink, I looked at those priced at 25/1 and under. That whittles the 64-runner potential field down to just 18 at the time of writing. Taking out the one seven-year-old, the three who didn’t run into the first six last time out, and further couple who didn’t win over 1m4f or more, and you’re down to just 12 runners.

Eight of 10 recent winners were rated 103 or higher. Even if we say 99+ to add some insurance, that further narrows this field down to only nine.What doesn’t show in the trends is that, even having hit the right metrics, we still need horses with an upward trajectory, who could be potentially well handicapped.

Of our remaining runners, that describes only Daiquiri Bay, Hopewell Rock, Opportunity, Tarriance, Aegean Prince, Mr Hollywood, and Emit.

How Horses Win or Lose at York

The Knavesmire is probably the best track in the country. Always offering a fair surface, York can produce some quick times, but it’s not all about a short, sharp turn of foot.

From the entrance to the home straight up to the line is the best part of five furlongs. That’s a long way to go. Often, those at the front go for home too early and can be picked off late. Horses coming with a long, concerted run up the straight do best and can collar those at the head of affairs.

Look out for runners with strong form at the finish at York, Doncaster, Newbury, or Haydock, as well as having finished best of all on uphill finishes at places like Newcastle, Newmarket, and Ascot. This shows us they can last all the way to the line.

Top Ebor Festival Jockeys & Trainers

When I back horses at York, including at the Ebor Festival, 90% of my thinking will be about that equine talent. How good are they? Can they improve? Will they handle York? What does their pedigree tell me?

The last 10% however can often be about the human element. I want to know that my horse will be ridden by a competent jockey, and trained by a very good handler. Based on their past success and current trajectory, these are the people to look out for at the 2026 Ebor Festival.

The Best Ebor Festival Trainers (2021-2025)

Andrew Balding has landed 13 winners across the last five Ebor Festivals. He leads the way over the time period ahead of John & Thady Gosden (11), Aidan O’Brien (10), and William Haggas (10).

Ralph Beckett has an impressive eight winners, while Charlie Appleby (4) concentrates on quality, rather than quantity. That hasn’t stopped his main stable jockey, William Buick, racking up the winners, however.

The Best Ebor Festival Jockeys (2021-2025)

Ryan Moore and William Buick are locked on an impressive 16 winners each across the last five Ebor Festivals. They are comfortably outdoing multiple champion jockey Oisin Murphy (11), and William Haggas’ main man Tom Marquand (10).

We’ve seen some brilliant performances over the last 10 years or so at the Ebor Festival. These are just some of the highlights:

2017 – Enable’s Brilliance

Enable went clear by five lengths to land her fourth straight Group 1 win as a three-year-old in the Yorkshire Oaks, having burst into the scene in the Oaks at Epsom.

2018 – Roaring Success

Roaring Lion, an absolute iron horse, had already run in the Craven, the 2000 Guineas, the Dante, the Derby, and the Eclipse when he turned up for the Juddmonte International. He powered home for victory by 3¼ lengths.

2019 – Battaash’s Raw Speed

York’s five furlong track record, held by the brilliant Dayjur, had stood for 29 years. That was until the brilliant Battaash shattered it in the 2019 Nunthorpe Stakes.

2020 – World’s Best Horse Crowned

Just how good the Juddmonte International truly is was personified by Ghaiyyath’s performance in 2020. He was just unstoppable, keeping Magical and Lord North at bay by three lengths. That run gave him a rating of 130, the highest in the world.

2022 – Trawlerman’s Unusual Route

In the 2022 Ebor Handicap, Frankie Dettori went off-piste and took Trawlerman on a wide route in search of better ground. After rejoining the main pack in the straight, he battled on for a famous win.

2025 – Ombudsman and the Pacemaker

There’d already been much talk of pacemakers in the summer of 2025 by the time the Juddmonte International came about. The Godolphin team gave Coolmore a dose of their own medicine, sending their pacesetter miles clear with the brilliant Ombudsman the one to chase him down best of all for a commanding 3½-length win.
