Carabao Cup 2025/2026 Betting Tips
The Carabao Cup often feels like the forgotten third competition for most clubs, which actually makes it a fantastic betting opportunity. Here are a few strategies to help punters make the most of the odds on Carabao Cup markets:
When teams don’t rate the tournament highly, they often take the opportunity to rest starters and play subs and youngsters. This is in contrast to lower league teams who see a chance to create some historic moments. This could drastically affect the betting odds for Carabao Cup markets.
Some teams will take the risk of putting out a weaker team, which gives opponents a better chance of winning, this has a huge impact on the odds for Carabao Cup matches.
In the past 10 editions, only 4 different teams have won it, Manchester City (5), Liverpool (2), Manchester United (2) and Newcastle (1). Since 2000, only six teams outside of the top six have won the competition. We don’t love it, but backing the bigger teams will give you a better chance overall.
Using our Carabao Cup stats can help you to find betting opportunities which aren’t always obvious. It’s a competition with less media attention than most, so being able to get the information you need from stats can be massive.
How to Place a Bet on the Carabao Cup
Placing a bet on the Carabao Cup is as easy as a two-yard tap-in, but just in case you’re Fernando Torres, here’s a quick guide. We’ll be using the bet365 Carabao Cup odds for this example, but most football betting sites will follow a similar process.
Popular Carabao Cup Betting Markets
The Carabao Cup odds may not get as much love as they deserve, but there’s still gets a pretty good showing from the bookmakers who offer it. That means you’re likely to find many great betting markets and opportunities. These are our favourites, which tend to deliver competitive odds and value.
A classic. Bet on who you think will win the competition. Remember, the odds to win the Carabao Cup vary wildly depending on the club. The odds for Grimsby Town will be much higher than the Liverpool odds to win the Carabao Cup, who are consistently amongst the favourites.
The Carabao Cup is fast-paced, and there’s no time for replays or even extra time. A match goes from full-time straight to penalties, which means there are only two options for the method of victory. Smaller clubs will want to stay compact and take it to the roulette wheel that is penalties, giving them a better chance of qualifying. That’s why this market can be so exciting, if placed on the right matches.
Bet on who you think will score the most goals in the competition. These Carabao Cup outright odds can be tricky to predict since smaller clubs play more games and have a better chance of scoring lots of goals in the first rounds.
Another exciting outright, if you’re liking the Carabao Cup final odds today, you can bet on an each-way, meaning that you just need your team to make it to the final, and even if they lose, you’ll get a return. This opens up the chance to back a relative outsider like Aston Villa, who can make it that far, but are unlikely to win.
Carabao Cup Tournament Format
The EFL Cup has gone through another revamp. Since clubs playing in Europe enter the 3rd round, and more English clubs are making it into European competitions, a format change was needed to accommodate those clubs.
The competition is open to all 92 clubs in the EFL and Premier League, but they enter in different stages. Here’s a quick rundown .
The preliminary round features the four lowest teams in the EFL League Two who were not relegated last season, so teams in positions 19 to 22. Each play once, and the two winners move on to round 1.
This round features all the Championship and League One teams, as well as the rest of the League Two teams. It’s a straight knockout round with 35 winners progressing to the second round. The draw is split into Northern and Southern teams to avoid extra travel times for supporters.
The 35 clubs from round 2 are joined by all the Premier League clubs who aren’t involved in European competitions. This draw is also divided into Northern and Southern teams. 23 teams progress to the third round.
The 9 Premier League teams join the rest of the pack in the third round. The draws are random, but the nine European clubs are drawn separately to ensure that they don’t play against each other.
This round is pretty standard. The 16 teams are drawn at random, and the winning eight teams will qualify for the quarterfinals.
The eight teams are once again drawn at random, and the four winners will progress to the semi-finals. Remember, there’s no extra time in the EFL Cup until this point.
The final four clubs enter one last draw and will play a two-legged cup tie. Teams play one home and one away game; if there’s a draw on aggregate, teams will head to extra time and penalties.
The final is held at Wembley, and the two teams will play a one-off final. If there’s a deadlock after 90 minutes, teams will play extra time followed by a penalty shootout.

The Carabao Cup final takes place in late March. It’s the first cup final in the calendar and is played at Wembley Stadium. We suggest betting as far away from this date as possible, as the odds on the carabao cup winner will be higher.
The majority of the Premier League teams enter in the second round, but those participating in the European competitions join in the third round. The third round joiners also cannot play against each other until the fourth round.
