The 2024 Africa Cup of Nations is poised to be the 34th edition of the tournament, and is set to take place from 13 January to 11 February 2024.

Initially set for summer 2023 to avoid clashing with European football, the tournament was moved to early 2024 due to Ivory Coast's seasonal weather concerns. Hence, this year's event is often referred to as AFCON 2023 or CAN 2023.

Betting on an international tournament of such pedigree is quite simple, with all the best bookmakers offering AFCON odds. Here’s how to get started:

  1. Select your preferred bookmaker from our above list of the best AFCON betting sites.

  2. Create an account with said bookie, making sure to claim the welcome offer.

  3. Browse AFCON matches, found under the international tournament section.

  4. Place your bets, keeping in mind the best betting strategies for the African Cup of Nations.

There’s a lot of value for punters to be found in the Africa Cup of Nations. Let’s go through some popular betting types at the AFCON, and how you should approach them:

Full-Time Result Betting

The simplest bet of them all, full-time result allows you to predict the outcome of a single match. There are three possibilities here: Team A wins, draw, or Team B wins.

Value will be rife throughout the tournament – look out for teams that are being wrongly priced for one reason or another, and take advantage of these situations.

Watch as many games as you can, prepare yourself with the latest team news and stats, and, most importantly, keep a cool head.

Under Goals Betting

The Africa Cup of Nations is known for having a lot of cagey affairs, with teams unwilling to commit many men forward, resulting in a lack of goals. In fact, if we compare the goal statistics for recent AFCON tournaments with the World Cup, the Euros and the Copa America, it quickly becomes apparent that this tournament is the most goal-shy.

TournamentAverage Goals Per Game
AFCON 20211.92
AFCON 20191.96
World Cup 20222.69
World Cup 20182.64
Euro 20202.78
Euro 20162.12
Copa America 20212.32
Copa America 20192.31

With UK punters accustomed to goal fests in the Premier League, Champions League, World Cups and Euros, this data may suggest that a mentality shift is required when betting on the Africa Cup of Nations. With goals hard to come by, under 2.5 goals could be the market to bet on here.

Outright Betting

Outright betting typically involves predicting the winner of the competition in question.

Unlike the World Cup, which has been dominated by a small group of teams and only claimed by 8 countries, the AFCON has seen 15 different winners. While predicting who that will be is no easy task – especially before it starts – analysing a team’s form in the run-up to the tournament can give you a good insight as to who might go all the way. In fact, the group stages present an excellent opportunity to recognise which teams are thriving.

If you’re not confident about that, another outright involves predicting the group stage winners, or which teams will advance to the knockout stages. This is the part of the tournament where the best teams can really assert their dominance against the lesser-ranked ones.

Moving away from team betting, betting on the top scorer or Golden Boot winner is one of the most entertaining bets you’ll find. With superstars like Mohammed Salah, Sadio Mané, Riyad Mahrez and Hakim Ziyech all taking part, there’s plenty of talent to get behind.

Keep in mind, though, that the Golden Boot winner is not necessarily linked to the team that wins the tournament. In fact, none of the top goal scorers in the previous 3 AFCONs played for the tournament winners.

All this basically boils down to the following piece of advice: back the player, not the team!

A giant killing playground, the AFCON boasts a vast mix of supreme talent and relative minnows. That makes creating Africa Cup of Nations betting tips somewhat tricky. Just to put things into perspective, after one round of matches, there have already been five upsets (including Tunisia losing to Namibia) at the time of writing.

AFCON Betting – Outright Markets

Morocco

Current favourites in the African Cup of Nations odds, the Atlas Lions are flying high after their historic World Cup performance. The team hasn’t changed much since then, so their dominance feels imminent.

Odds: 4/1

Senegal

The defending champions are a team to watch, with the likes of Sadio Mané, and break out star Lamine Camara already leaving their marks on the tournament. They’re a valuable choice for African Cup of Nations outright odds, and if Camara can keep up his goal scoring tally, he’s a shoe-in for the Golden Boot (pardon the pun).

Odds: 9/2

Ivory Coast

The home of Didier Drogba, Yaya Touré, and this year’s AFCON, the host are third favourites. The Elephants will benefit from an electric crowd pushing them forward for their third title. Don’t underestimate the home advantage – eight of the 15 AFCON winners have won it at home at least once. Will they be the ones to tip the scales to 9 out of 15?

Odds: 11/2

AFCON Betting – Other Markets

  • Over 1.5 goals: From the 12 first-round matches, 10 ended with scores over 1.5. It’s goals galore, although only four matches finished with over 2.5 goals.

  • To draw: Five matches ended in draws with four of them being 1-1 draws – an exact score bet is risky, but will give you some great returns.

  • Both teams to score: There have been six matches in which both teams scored, as well as six teams who kept a clean sheet. Both are interesting markets to bet on.

  • Yellow cards: So far, 10 out of 12 matches saw both teams receiving one card each. There were also nine out of 12, which saw over 2.5 total cards.

  • List Icon

Africa has arguably never been blessed with this much talent at the same time. Sadio Mané, Mohammed Salah, Achraf Hakimi and Mohammed Kudus are just a few big names who are expected to sprinkle their magic at this competition.

Discover Africa’s next breakout stars. AFCON is a glorious opportunity for young players to showcase their talent to the rest of the world.

Expand your football horizons. Exploring new tournaments is a great way to broaden your understanding of football and betting.

A total of 24 teams compete in the African Cup of Nations, which usually takes place every 2 years. The hosts – Ivory Coast, in this instance – qualify automatically, while the other 23 teams earn their place in the tournament through a qualifying stage featuring 54 countries.

After a preliminary round through which 6 of the lowest-ranked 12 teams qualify, 48 teams are divided into 12 groups of 4, with each team playing each other twice. The top two teams from each group will progress to the tournament finals. Qualification for the 2023/24 AFCON, was played between March 2022 and October 2023.

Once the final 24 teams are confirmed, a draw will take place to split them into six groups of four teams. Each team faces every group member once during this stage, with the top two from each group proceeding for the knockout stage automatically. On top of the 12 group winners and runners-up, the four third-placed teams with the highest points also progress to the next round.

In the knockout stages, winners are decided through a single-legged fixture, with extra time and penalty shoot-outs taking place to decide the winner if necessary. Teams start off in the round of 16, with the winners progressing to the quarter-finals, followed by the semi-finals. The losers of the semi-finals compete in a third-place play-off against each other, while the winners face-off in the final to decide the winner of the competition.

The final will take place in Alassane Ouattara Stadium, in Abidjan, the economic capital of Ivory Coast.
