Belmont Stakes Betting Tips
We have studied the form and have looked carefully at the US flat racing season to develop our Belmont Stakes betting strategy. Check out our ante-post Belmont Stakes tips.
Sovereignty to win (2/1 odds at William Hill)
Sovereignty is looking to be the first non-Triple Crown winner to claim victory at Belmont since 1995. Bill Mott, the winning trainer at Belmont in 2010, chose not to race Sovereignty at the Preakness Stakes, meaning he will be well rested here. We think that he will have what it takes to outperform the competition and that 2/1 is a good price.
Journalism, a good each-way bet (9/4 odds at William Hill)
Journalism is an extremely consistent horse, and you can expect him to put up a good performance. He won the Preakness in superb style, after missing out to Sovereignty in the Derby. He could win this but finishing in front of Sovereignty might be a tall order. We think he is a great each-way, given that he rarely runs a bad race.
Baeza to place (5/1 odds at bet365)
On the surface, Baeza looks like a bit of a leftfield choice, given that he has only one victory under his belt. However, he performed superbly in Kentucky and ran well at Santa Anita. If Sovereignty and/or Journalism falter, he could take advantage. Worth backing each-way.
How We Select Our Belmont Stakes Betting Tips
To compile our Belmont Stakes betting tips, we analysed the relevant stats and data available. We weighed up the performances from the horses, the trainers and the jockeys over the season, along with the following factors.
Age is often a key factor in horse racing, but here it is not that relevant. This is because all the horses in the Belmont Stakes are three-year old thoroughbreds. Each horse will have competed a limited number of times, so performances over the season must be studied.
This is a Grade 1 race, so experience at the top level is important. Horses who have performed well in previous top-tier races can have an advantage. Most Belmont Stakes winners have victories, or at least places in graded stakes races to their name. The Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes, the first two legs of the Triple Crown, can be a good indication.
The distance is usually 1 ½ miles (12 furlongs), making it the longest race in the Triple Crown. However, the temporary move to Saratoga due to renovation work at Belmont Park means that the race was shortened to 1 ¼ miles, the same as the Kentucky Derby. The 2025 edition will again be at Saratoga. So, look at horses who have performed well over that distance and who can produce that sort of time on a dirt track.
Look at how a horse has been performing recently. Obviously, victories and consistent places are a big factor. However, looking at the results of the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes are a good indication. Plus, a horse who has been racing well since the start of the season might not hold that form. Look for a horse who has started steadily and is hitting form leading up to the race.
It might be 10 furlongs on the flat, but the weather, especially rain, can alter the going on a dirt track. Horses who can perform on dry, fast tracks and who can still hold their form on heavier, muddier tracks are more likely to preform to expectations regardless of the weather. Given the nature of the course and the distance, horses who can run from, or just off the front, are more likely to succeed than those who make a late run for home from further back.
Weather conditions can be a huge factor in horse racing. Some horses can perform well in high temperatures, while others wilt. Some need warmer temperatures to get going, while others can operate in cooler climates. Rain can make the dirt track either slippery or heavy, and some horses cope better than others when this happens. This must be factored in when looking at Belmont Stakes tips.
Belmont Stakes Jockey & Trainer Stats
Researching trainer and jockey form is vital when betting on horse racing. Looking at successful trainer/jockey combos, and the form of individual trainers and jockeys alongside, is very important when developing a Belmont Stakes betting strategy.
Training a racehorse and getting them into top shape for the races that matter is about finding a system and a regime that works. This includes nutrition, schedule, facilities and recovery. Jockeys are very much part of this, and the most successful trainers work with jockeys who can get the best out of their horses.
We’ve gathered the top performing trainers and jockeys, considering the flat racing season, so far, in North America, to help you with your research.

Belmont Stakes Latest Trends
Upon analysing several sets of data, we have come up with some observations and stats to help you make your Belmont Stakes betting picks.
-
Front runners have an advantage: This year, as in 2024, the race will be held at Saratoga Racecourse. Looking at Saratoga’s biggest race, the Travers Stakes, we can see that horses that run from the front or stalk the leader usually take the first two places.
-
Closers worth an each-way punt: Horses who come through the field are unlikely to win at this venue but have a good record for finishing third or fourth in the Travers Stakes. So, this year you might want to back a form horse who usually makes a late, decisive move each-way.
-
Preakness could be a weakness: Over the last 22 editions of the Belmont, three horses who won the Preakness Stakes claimed victory. However, they were the only Belmont Stakes winners in that time who competed in the Preakness. Recovering from the Derby, racing at the Preakness and then being recovered for the Belmont is a big ask.
-
Derby Runners can Produce in Belmont Stakes: 14 winners of the Belmont Stakes over the last 22 years have competed in the Kentucky Derby. 11 out of 14 won the Derby and then didn’t race again until the Belmont. The fact that two of those winners won the Triple Crown speaks volumes. Getting three-year-old thoroughbreds to be in racing condition for all three Triple Crown Races is not easy. Only exceptional horses can win a triple crown, and recover after the Derby, before going for a second peak at the Belmont, is a tactic of many trainers.
-
Pletcher and Baffert are the trainers to watch: Both Todd A. Pletcher and Bob Baffert have trained Belmont Stakes winners twice between 2015 and 2024. Pletcher’s victories came in 2017 (Tapwrit) and in 2022 (Mo Donegal). Baffert’s winners were American Pharoah in 2015 and Justify in 2018, with both these triumphs securing the Triple Crown. From 22 runners over the past 10 races, Pletcher has two wins and nine places, while from four runners in that time, Baffert has two wins and two places. Betting on horses trained by these two, for the win or each-way, could be a winning Belmont Stakes strategy!
-
Outsiders can upset the odds: Only six favourites in the last 22 Belmont Stakes have won. Nine of the last 22 winners have had a starting price of 10/1 or higher.
-
Graded stakes winners stand a better chance: Experience in graded stakes races is vital. Since 2003, 15 winners of the Belmont Stakes had a graded stakes victory under their belt. Six of the seven winners have, at least, finished in the places at a graded stakes race.
-
Wins by fillies are rare: Only 24 fillies have competed in the Belmont Stakes, producing three winners, in 2007, 1905 and 1867.

Saratoga Racecourse Tips
As in 2024, this year’s Belmont Stakes will be held at Saratoga Racecourse. The change in venue means that the race will not be over the traditional 1 ½ miles but will drop to 1¼ miles. So, the profile of a potential winner at the Belmont Stakes will be different to normal, giving the different distance and the different challenges presented at Saratoga.
Saratoga’s main track has a 11/8-mile (9 furlong) circumference. The dirt track was upgraded in 2017, leading to better drainage, meaning the going is unlikely to get too heavy, unless there is a huge amount of rain.
Looking at races over 1¼ miles at Saratoga, over the past five years, we can see that it is suited to certain types of horses and certain tactics. Frontrunners who push the pace and those who like to get up to the front but stalk the leader, rather than pushing the pace themselves, have a greater success rate.
Since 2020, over 50% of winners over that distance have been won by horses who were between one and four lengths off the front at the first checkpoint. Over 30% of winners in that period were either leading or within a length at the first checkpoint. So, the course suits jockeys and horses who get upfront early on and hang on. Those who prefer to stay off the pace and make a late run through the field have a low success rate.
The post positions also have a bearing, with horses drawn 1-3 from the inside faring better, especially if they prefer to lead early and hang on. Horses that prefer to stalk the leaders can perform well from any post position on this course.

bet365: Competitive odds, extra places, a top horse racing bookie
Chris - Horse racing in the United States is covered superbly by bet365, featuring livestreams when broadcast rights allow so. They present their ante post odds promptly, and their frequent odds boosts, in-depth markets and user-friendly website make them our top betting site for the Belmont Stakes.
Belmont Stakes Betting Sites With Livestreaming
Sky Sports holds the rights to the US Triple Crown. Due to this, you won’t be able to watch the Belmont Stakes on any of the usual livestreaming betting sites. Should you want to follow the action live, you will need a subscription, or a venue that is showing the race.
Most Popular Belmont Stakes Betting Markets
Being the final leg of the US Triple Crown, there is a lot of interest in the Belmont Stakes, therefore there are plenty of betting markets available. We have identified the most popular.
A winner bet is as straightforward as it sounds. It is a wager placed on the outcome of the race. You are simply betting on the horse you think will win. When picking your selection for the Belmont Stakes, remember that you will only get your money if your horse is first past the post, regardless of how well it performs. Unless your horse wins, you don’t get a payout with this type of wager.
Each-way bets have two parts. The first part of the bet is a wager on your pick to win and the second part of the bet is a place bet on your horse to finish in the places. Usually, this would mean ¼ of the odds for a horse to finish in the top three. However, for important events like the Belmont Stakes, bookmakers will often run promotions offering extra places for each-way bets, so, keep your eyes peeled for these offers. If your research has convinced you that a horse will run well, then it could be time for an each-way bet.
Forecast bets are wagers where you select two horses to come 1st and 2nd, in this exact order. The amount that the forecast pays is announced after the race. A reverse forecast will carry shorter odds. For this, you need to predict the first two horses, but in any order.
Tricast bets work in the same way as forecasts and are a regular betting option in horse racing. The difference is that you must place three horses rather than two. Naturally, this is harder to predict, so you will get longer odds. Landing a bet such as this one, in a high-quality race, is not easy. A combination tricast allows you to win if your horses finish in the first three, in any order, but your bet must be multiplied by six.

Belmont Stakes Betting FAQs
The best three Belmont Stakes betting sites are bet365, Unibet and Ladbrokes.
Sky Sports holds the broadcasting rights to the US Triple Crown, so UK bookmakers will be unable to livestream the event.
Anything before race day is classified as ante-post, therefore an ante-post bet at the Belmont Stakes is a wager made ahead of the event. The advantage to betting ante-post is that the odds are usually higher, but the flip side is that you lose your stake if they don’t run. Some bookmakers, for example bet365 and Coral, offer non-runner no-bet (NRNB) insurance to cover this.
The Belmont Stakes race is scheduled to take place on Saturday, June 7. The Belmont Stakes Festival runs from June 4 until June 8.
The Belmont Stakes Festival runs for five days. The showpiece race, the Belmont Stakes, is traditionally 1½ miles (12 furlongs), however, due to renovation work at Belmont Park, the 2024 and 2025 Belmont Stakes were relocated to Saratoga. This means the race distance is 1¼ (10 furlongs).
Dornoch, ridden by Luis Saez and trained by Danny Gargan, won the Belmont Stakes in 2024.
