Understanding horse racing involves a collection of colourful phrases and terms, and hoping to win considerable sum money when your pick wins is obviously a big part of the experience overall. The sport provides a comparatively versatile way of wagering, since you're not restricted to simply betting on a horse coming in first. It depends on the type of bet; however, you can win money if your pick finishes second or third. A winning horse pays best on bets that it will end in the first place. It pays slightly less for place bets and less still for show bets. It can pay in three ways for across-the-board wagers.

Win and Place Bets

The two most prominent casual bets at the Epsom Derby are the win and place bets. You can sometimes place them in tandem with each-way bets. If you bet on a horse to win, the bet wins if the horse finishes first. The place bet refunds your money if your chosen horse ends the race first, second, or third. Bookmakers determine the odds, depending on which system you use.

Accumulator Bets

Accumulator bets are available in all variations. They require that you hit every one of a combination of wagers in order to win the bet. Since it isn't easy to hit an accumulator bet, the chances for rewards are excellent even if you stake a small amount.

Straight Bets

A straight bet is the simplest form of thoroughbred wagering. Placing a straight bet means that you are wagering on the horse to win. If the horse finishes second even by a nose, you lose. A straight bet can also mean that when you wager on a horse to finish first, second or third.

Across the Board

An across-the-board bet is when you place three bets: one for the horse to win, one for the horse to come in second, and one for the horse to come in third. If it wins, all three bets pay. If it finishes second and third, then two wagers win. You cannot collect on the first-place bet because the horse didn't cross the wire first. If the horse finishes in third place, the third-place finish pays. It is a satisfying bet if the horse wins as you effectively collect three times, and if it comes third, at least you won't lose all your money, and will get something back on your investment.

Exotic Wagers

Exotic wagers are fancier and more complicated than other bet types. They involve more than one horse, which means they are harder to win – having said that, they also pay more than straight bets. Below, you’ll find a few exotic bets.

Boxed Bet

Boxing a bet is covering all possible combinations for multiple horses to finish. For boxing an exacta, you bet that Horse A wins, Horse B places and Horse B wins while Horse A places. The bet is for when you think two horses will finish first and second, but you aren't sure in which order. Every combination represents a separate bet.

Daily Double

With a Daily Double, you are betting on two horses in consecutive races in the daily double. They are typically the first and second races. Each of your horses will have finished first.

Exacta

Exacta bets are successful when you choose the first two finishers in a race, and then end up in the exact order they finish. You could also box your bet.

Pick 3

A Pick 3 bet is essentially an enhanced daily double. You bet on the first place finishers of three consecutive races, rather than just two. Pick races may also extend to six, whereby you need to choose the eventual winners of six straight races, which can be extremely difficult.

Pick 6

Pick 6 bets do offer significant winnings, and sometimes consolidation payouts. Extended periods can pass without anyone winning a Pick 6. Some race tracks carry over the unclaimed winnings. The prize money moves forward to the next race, so the pot grows until someone eventually strikes it big.

Quinella

A quinella bet is a variation of bet boxing. You need to pick two winning horses, both win and place. The order in which they finish isn't important. Unlike a boxed exacta, which is a single bet, Quinella is technically two bets, and therefore pays less if you win.

Superfecta

The Superfecta is a complex bet as is Pick 6. You need to select the first four horses to win a race in the order they finish. You can box a superfecta; however, there are several combinations as it covers twice as many horses. It can be rather expensive if you turn out to be wrong. If just one horse you didn't anticipate gets into the top four, then you could lose quite a large stake.

The Epsom Derby is part of the British Champions Series and goes by the official name of the Investec Derby, having been sponsored by the Investec financial company since 2009. It is Group 1 flat horse race open to three-year-old fillies and colts that takes place annually at Epsom Downs Racecourse in Surrey, England over a one-mile distance, four furlongs and 6 yards in June each year. The Derby is a unique test for thoroughbreds, where they need to display a rare blend of speed, stamina, and balance to negotiate the gruelling terrain and left-hand camber. The weights of the horses are 9st for females and 8st 11lb for males.

The Epsom Derby racetrack is unique with its undulations and sharp, tight turns. Bends go both left and right, and the camber in the home straight can easily catch out the more inexperienced horses. The five-furlong track is the fastest in the country, and goes all the way downhill for a blistering test of speed. There is a draw bias towards high numbered stalls over the five and six-furlong sprints. The 7-furlong track has a sharp left-handed curve providing an advantage to drawing low over that distance.

Among the featured races, the Derby itself is undoubtedly the highlight at the racetrack track and the whole flat season. The Epsom Oaks takes place the day before and is the fillies' equivalent, along with the Coronation Cup, which has the same course and distance – for older horses, however. The 3 Group 1s are always top-class, and the prize-money is £1.5 million, and the winner bags £850,650.

This famous race has a rich history, with the racecourse itself having become become synonymous with the Derby and holds a capacity crowd of 130,000. The Derby is the highlight, and also features the Group 1 Oaks Stakes and Coronation Cup. The Jockey Club owns the course, which also shares a long history with the Royal Family. Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth regularly attends the Derby challenge, but success has so far eluded her.

The first race ever held was on the Epsom Downs was back in 1661, although it was seventy years before the course staged twice-yearly meetings. Eclipse won at Epsom in May 1769 while the Oaks inaugural running took place in 1779, and the Derby was introduced the following year. The racecourse at Epsom Downs has undergone several enhancements recently, including the new Duchess Stand completed in 2009. The new stand cost an estimated £23.5 million and caters for banquets, conferences and exhibitions.
