Betfair Chase Betting Tips & Predictions 2021

We are less than a week away from the 2021 renewal of the Betfair Chase and with minimal rain forecast throughout the week, the going at Haydock Park should remain quite fixed to what it is right now, which is good to soft. There will be plenty of people hoping a little water will fall to soften things up a little further. Perhaps none more so that Nigel Twiston-Davies who once again enters three times winner Bristol De Mai, whose only defeat in this race came in 2019 when he finished in second place to Lostintranslation.

Owned by Simon Munir and Isaac Souede, Bristol De Mai is more than capable of working well on this surface but would ultimately prefer hock-deep ground if he is to equal the record of the legendary Kauto Star and win a fourth Betfair Chase at Haydock on Saturday.

Bristol De Mai has won just three of his 16 starts on good or good to soft going, but the majority of those have been in Group One company whereas his six wins in 13 starts over fences that came on soft or heavy ground were not. The ten-year-old five times Group One winner has twice won here on heavy ground and also beat the previous season's Gold Cup first and second placed pairing of Native River and Might Bite on a decent surface in 2018.

He faces a challenge in his bid for historical equalisation though, and that comes from Savills Chase winner and Gold Cup number two A Plus Tard who is now the short price favourite, even if he hasn’t had a run out since his excellent performance at the Cheltenham Festival in May. A Plus Tard is a worthy favourite whatever the ground is come Saturday and in terms of his CV and his accomplishments he is streets ahead of his rivals in this race. Plus, even at seven years old, he is still, along with Royale Pagaille, one of the more youthful sprinters in an otherwise ageing field.

Lostintranslation along with Chantry House and Champ were not listed in Monday’s nine confirmations, leaving Next Destination, Royale Pagaille, Imperial Aura and Waiting Patiently as the other horses priced up in single figures. Of those praying for rain are Imperial Aura, Royale Pagaille and Chatham Street Lad as well as the 2018 runner-up to Bristol De Mai, 11-year-old Native River. But it’s the two right at the top of the betting that, while they might both prefer a little rainfall, are generally speaking less reliant on a change in the weather in order to put on a show. That, plus their extra little bit of class, means that those two will take some stopping.

Popular Betfair Chase Betting Markets

The Betfair Chase is one of the most competitive horse races drawing a large audience. Just like the Grand National event, there are numerous betting markets for horse racing with exceptional odds by the best leading online bookmakers . The plethora of betting opportunities makes choosing a suitable bet rather challenging, so here’s a breakdown of the most commonplace horse racing bets for the Betfair Chase 2021 and a few useful betting tips.

Outright Race Winner Betting

The most straightforward and easiest of all markets, an Outright Race Winner lets you place a bet on a horse to win the race outright. Because of its simplicity, this wager tends to be the most popular at all bookies offering horse betting. For your bet to win, your chosen horse has to pass the finishing post first.

Each-Way Betting

With an each-way bet you can place a stake on a horse to win, and double the bet to back the horse to finish in chosen places as well. You get a payout if your horse wins, and also if it comes in among your chosen places.

Forecast Betting

A forecast bet requires picking two horses you believe will finish in first and in second place during the race. To win the bet, both choices need to be accurate in the precise order you enter them in the betting slip. You can also double your bet by placing a reverse forecast bet, whereby both horses can come in first and second in any order.

Top Jockey Betting

An alternative option is to bet on the jockey that performs best throughout the entire day’s racing. Although the bet isn’t that commonly available, when it is, you can try something a little different with decent odds at most online bookies.

Placepot Betting

Placepot betting is an interesting option whereby you are wagering on all of the races over the entire day’s meet in this case Betfair Chase Day. A placepot bet is a matter of looking at a single day’s race card and selecting one or several horses to place in each of the races over the entire event. With a bit of luck, your wager carries on throughout the event competition until the final race, and it will then pay out accordingly.

Tournament Structure for Betfair Chase

The Grade 1 Betfair Chase is a National Hunt steeplechase open to horses older than five years. Haydock Park is the venue with a distance of 3 miles, 1 furlong, and 125 yards. There are 19 fences to be jumped, and the race takes place in November each year. The test is the season’s first Grade 1 Chase in the UK and also the first race of the campaign.

The fences are notoriously challenging for horses to jump over. The weight requirement for the horses is 11st-7lbs for males and 11st for females. Horses that run well often go on to more success. Multiple winners include Kauto Star, Cue Card, Bristol De Mai, and Silviniaco Conti.

The Betfair Chase attracts the leading contenders for the Cheltenham Gold Cup, with only a few horses winning the Chase Triple Crown. They include Kauto Star, Waiting Patiently, Might Bite, and Native River. This relatively new fixture on the racing calendar has quickly transformed into a highlight of the National Hunt season.

In 2020, the race had a purse worth £160,000.

History of Betfair Chase

The Betfair Chase has a short history, first starting in 2005 when the online bookmaker Betfair first established it as part of a £1 million bonus scheme called the Betfair Million. As the name itself implies, the latter offered £1 million to the winner of this race and two subsequent other races, later confirmed as the King George VI Chase and Cheltenham Gold Cup, and rebranded as the Chase Triple Crown.

The Betfair Chase has become a crucial stage in the run-up to the Cheltenham Festival, where the best chasers clash at Haydock Park. The race was initially over three miles long; however, it was later extended slightly so runners have a longer stretch towards the first bend.

The Betfair Chase was first registered as the Lancashire Chase, and is the perfect preparation for horses running in the King George VI Chase at Kempton Park. The Lancashire race takes place a month before the Christmas spectacular. There is a mouth-watering £1 million bonus for winning the Chase Triple Crown, which was reintroduced in 2015 by the Jockey Club, adding extra spice to the Betfair Chase.

The Betfair Chase is the initial leg of the Chase Triple Crown, with the Grade 1 contest having legendary runners like Kauto Star, who won the Betfair Chase no less than four times. He remains the only horse that managed to win the Chase Triple Crown.

Because of this, the trophy for this achievement has been named the Kauto Star Trophy. It takes a particular horse to win the treble, and so far, no one has matched that incredible feat. If any horse can pick up the Betfair Chase, King George VI Chase and Gold Cup, the prize will be £1 million.
