Greyhound Betting Tips for Beginners
If you’re new to dog racing, we have a number of pointers to keep you up to speed. Check out our tips on greyhound betting to find the maximum value in your wagers.
Study the form:
In common with other sports, you can increase your chances of success in greyhound betting by doing your research. This means studying the form. You need to check out how each dog has performed in their last five or six races, including looking at times recorded over particular distances at particular tracksTrap draws matter:
The trap number a dog draws can have a significant effect. You can investigate their trap history as some dogs perform better from different starting position. Which trap is best usually depends on a dog’s strengths and weaknesses.
Trap 1 (on the inside) usually gives the dog the shortest route. However, if they are not suited to breaking quickly, they could get caught up in congestion and/or bumped. Dogs in the middle need to get out quickly. If not, then they can get bumped on corners. The outside traps obviously leave the dog with a greater distance to run. But they are less likely to be bumped and if they are very quick but do not like contact, then this draw gives them the best chance to perform well.
Competition level. Check the grade:
Look into the grade each dog has been running at. A dog might have a lot of wins, but they could have been at a lower standard. A1 is the highest level of competition in the UK. The A Grade goes all the way down to A10 which is for entry level dogs. When compiling our greyhound racing betting tips, we always look into how dogs perform at different levels and how they deal with a step up in class.Research tracks and track conditions:
A greyhound’s performance can vary from track to track. Some are more suited to tighter turns, while others prefer a circuit where the turns are more gradual. Some dogs just appear to be more comfortable at certain venues. The weather can also play a part. Rain can make the track heavier causing some dogs to struggle but allowing stronger dogs to thrive. These are key factors we consider when making our tips for greyhound betting.Look at the race distance:
Greyhounds will perform better over certain distances than others. Sprint distances are classed as those under 500m.Choose the markets you know:
Make sure that you understand the betting markets. Start off with win and each-way bets before experimenting with more niche markets such as forecast and tricast wagers.
Popular Greyhound Betting Features
There are a number of features available at greyhound betting sites in the UK. Check out the best ways to enhance your experience and find value in online greyhound betting.
Know Your Bet Types
There are several different types of bets available at the best UK betting sites. Therefore, when greyhound betting online, it is important to understand how these different bets work to find the best value and to make the most of the experience. We have explained the most common bet types for you below.
This is the most straightforward bet. You are simply wagering on which dog will come first.
An each-way bet means that your bet is in two parts. One for your dog to win, the other for it to finish second. This reduces the odds and therefore your payout, however, if there are two evenly matched dogs in a race, it is a good way to give yourself a bit of a safety net.
This is where you select more than one pick and stack up your selections for potentially greater returns. There are plenty of ways to do this, such as betting on doubles, trebles and four folds, or even by placing your dogs in a combination or system bet such as a Yankee, Canadian, and/or a Heinz. This could involve backing different dogs across different races and different venues. Remember, while the greyhound betting odds will get longer with each selection, meaning that your potential payout will be greater, you are making your chances of winning harder with each addition.
These bets are popular in horse and dog racing, and are available at the best online greyhound betting sites. Forecast wagers involve predicting which dogs will finish first and second. While the odds are much higher, it’s a lot harder to predict. A reverse forecast is the same principle, but it covers you if your predictions are switched meaning that your picks can finish in the first two in any order for your bet to be successful.
This is the same principle as the forecast; however, you need to predict the first three for a tricast and then get the top three correct in any order for the combination tricast. Here’s how a combination tricast is broken down into six bets based on a selection of Trap 1, Trap 2, and Trap 3.
Finishing Order.
1, 2, 3 = Win
1, 3, 2 = Win
2, 1, 3 = Win
2, 3, 1 = Win
3, 1, 2 = Win
3, 2, 1 = Win
Any other combination would not win.
Obviously, the greyhound betting odds are longer and payouts larger for tricasts over forecasts as they are more difficult to land.
Greyhound Betting: Live Streaming
Live streaming of greyhound racing is common in the UK industry and the best greyhound betting sites allow you to follow the action live.
Different greyhound betting sites have different criteria to access the live streams. At bet 365, you must have placed at least £0.50 to win or £0.25 each-way on your pick to stream a race.
At other bookies, for instance Coral, a funded account will suffice. You can also access radio commentary. William Hill is another bookie to provide radio commentary as well as visual streaming. Betfred guarantee punters radio commentary, but a bet of £1 on the race you want to watch is enough to unlock the stream.
The Best Greyhound Betting Markets
Along with the different types of bets we have outlined, there are a range of markets available at the best greyhound racing betting sites in the UK. Check out some markets you might want to investigate.
Available at bet365 among others, this allows you to get some value out of races where one dog in the race looks significantly better.
Similar to each-way betting, you can either bet on a dog to finish in the first two or the first four. Obviously, in a six-greyhound race, the betting odds are significantly shorter for the top four.
For this market you can bet on a specific trap number to produce the most winners across a whole meeting or several selected races at the same or multiple venues. Coral and William Hill are two of the bookmakers who offer this type of market.
Bet on whether the race winner runs from the inside traps (1,2,3) or the outside traps (4,5,6).
You can bet on a greyhound to finish in a specific place, for instance 2nd or 3rd.

Greyhound Betting Sites FAQs
There is no guaranteed way to win when betting on greyhounds. However, if you do your research, study the form, and look closely at the markets you are betting on, then you are more likely to make informed choices.
SP means starting price in greyhound betting. This is the odds of a particular entry in the fixed odds market at the time that the race begins.
A reverse forecast is where you select two dogs to finish first and second in the race. Unlike a forecast, where you have to pick the correct order, in a reverse forecast, your two picks can finish in any order.
A tricast is where you pick the first three dogs to finish in the correct order.
There are typically six dogs in a greyhound race.
