How Does Greyhound Betting Work?

Traditionally, greyhound betting has existed as part of the daily offering of available races for punters to back. Punters usually select the trap rather than the dog’s racing name, while races usually last a matter of seconds.

Dog races take place daily in the morning, afternoon, evening and night, in venues up and down the United Kingdom. Universally across the industry, the dogs’ race in fields of six with colour coded bibs to donate which trap the dog started in. These are as follows, Red (Trap 1), Blue (Trap 2), White (Trap 3), Black (Trap 4), Orange (Trap 5) and Black and White stripes (Trap 6).

We are going to get into the strategy behind greyhound racing shortly, but in terms of the actual process of betting on a greyhound race, it really could not be easier. Here is a quick breakdown of how to bet on greyhound racing.

  • Sign into your chosen betting site. If you are not registered to any betting site, you will need to do that first. This should only take a few minutes and will require details like your e-mail, age, and address.
  • Deposit funds if you do not have any funds already in your account. If you have only just signed up and have not yet entered any payment details, you will need to do so now. As always, never deposit more than you can afford to lose.
  • Pick a race. They should be easy to find, if there is not one that takes your fancy on the homepage, greyhound or greyhound racing should be available on the list of available sports. From here, you can choose from races taking place now or in the near future. There is rarely a lack of choice here so don’t worry about finding one.
  • Choose your betting market. From here the greyhounds and markets you can bet on should be made clear to you. So, make your pick, this can be as simple as clicking on the greyhound you wish to back.
  • Place your stake. Once your pick has been made you will usually be directed to the betting slip where you can enter your stake. Generally, this will also be where you can see your potential returns.
  • Place your bet. Now all that has been selected, its just a case of hitting the “place your bet” button, or whatever name your operator has chosen to confirm, and that is it. You have now placed a bet on greyhound racing online. Nice and easy.

Greyhound Racing Betting Tips

There is a lot of people out there with different opinions about the best ways to approach greyhound betting from a strategic perspective. Some of these ideas are good, some of them are not so good. We are here to break down five of what we think are the best pieces of advice out there for beginners, so you know where to start.

1. Study the racing forms

When it comes to putting on a greyhound bet this is the most commonly given kind of greyhound racing tips, and it is with good reason. Most of us are not dog race experts who have an encyclopaedic knowledge of the form of each participant from the last few months. Therefore, the racing forms, where you can find out how each greyhound has finished in recent races, with details, is vital to understanding the dynamics of a race. They are often very comprehensive and are the best way of educating yourself on a fundamental level so you can make a smart, informed betting decisions.

2. If you are new, start with To Win and Each-way bets

There is a lot more betting variety in the world of greyhound racing than many initially realise, and we do think these markets are worthy of your consideration. However, if you are new to this type of betting, it may be worth sticking to the simple To Win and Each-way betting markets to find your feet before looking to more complicated options.

To Win is exactly what it sounds like, you are backing that greyhound to win that race. Each way bets sees you place another bet, meaning you can win if the greyhound places. Because of the small number of participants placement usually only stretches to second place. These markets are simple enough for you to get your head around the basics, which is vital to future success.

3. But do consider more markets when ready

When you feel you understand the basics consider the other betting markets that are available. There is plenty of variety offered by greyhound bookmakers. Examples include straight forecast, where you need the first two dogs in the correct order. Reverse forecast is the same, but your two picks can finish in each other’s places and still be successful. A straight tricast sees you pick the first three dogs in order for even bigger stakes. On top of that there is a whole host of multiple bets to choose from. In other words, take advantage of everything greyhound bookies have to offer.

4. Do not just go with your gut

Well, ok, go with your gut if that is what you think will bring you the most enjoyment. If your greyhound picks name sounds like your favourite show and you want to back it for that reason, go right ahead. Betting is always supposed to be about enjoying yourself. However, if you want to make as smart a bet as you can, then this is not the best way of going about it.

5. Do not believe any impossible promises

Most of us have heard of some greyhound tips that someone claims are an absolute certainly. Our last piece of advice is really simple, there is no such thing. Like all forms of gambling greyhound racing is about chance and probability, and there is no magic piece of advice, tip or trick that can ensure success. You can make smarter, more considered bets, through good research and careful thought to maximise your chances but losing is always a possibility. And, considering that there is no such thing as an absolute certainly, never bet more than you can afford to lose.

Greyhound Racing Glossary

If you are new to the world of greyhound racing you may be left confused by some of the words you see and hear. But there is no need to worry, it is all very simple once you break down what they actually mean. We have gone through 20 common phrases you are likely to come across when getting into greyhound racing so you can go into these markets as informed as possible. Do note that there are specific to greyhound racing as opposed to general betting terms.

Greyhound betting term Description
Average early speed As the name would suggest, this is a vital statistic based on the average early speed of a greyhound, taken from the last six races. This gives you a good idea of how fast a greyhound is generally.
Box This is the post position that the greyhounds begin the race from.
Dead HeatA term used to describe when it is impossible to tell the winner between two greyhounds passing the finishing post.
DoubleheaderWhen there are two meetings at the same track on the same day.
Forced Out This term is used in a situation where one greyhound is pushed, blocked off or crowded from the inside track by other participants.
Grading system In order to ensure that greyhounds compete against participants of a similar standards, there is a grading system from A to D for adult racers.
InfieldThis is the inside of the oval track, naturally providing a strategic advantage, that is why being forced out is such a disadvantage.
InterferenceOccasionally there is contact between greyhounds, which can affect their ability to win the race, which is known as interference.
JudgeThe person that decides the winner of the race in the case of a dead heat.
Kennel Many of us are familiar with kennels, here they are specifically contracted to tracks to take care of racing greyhounds.
Lure A mechanical device that drives around the racing oval, used, as the name would suggest, to lure the greyhounds after it.
Muzzle A device that is fitted over the greyhound’s mouth, the white tip is used to help in photo finishes.
Post Time The time that the race is set to begin.
Program A book of statistics for all the races that day, traditionally handed out in physical form, online versions of all this information should be readily available.
Scratch This term is used when a greyhound has been withdrawn from the race before it begins.
Sprint A race that takes place under five sixteenths of a mile is known as a sprint.
Take Out The money taken from the betting pool for the profit of the track itself.
Tote BoardThis is where you will find odds and pay-out information, the online version of this will be found where you would find their sporting markets and odds generally.
Winners Circle At the end of a race, the winner often goes to the winner’s circle, where there is a ceremonial presentation.
WireThe line the greyhounds must cross to finish the race.

Greyhound Betting Types

While we have listed the four most popular ways to bet on greyhounds, in fact there are all manner of ways to bet on dog racing and what follows is a mere taster of what you can expect when greyhound betting.

Single To Win

Betting on a dog to win a race, or perhaps a cup some point in the season, is a straightforward matter of selecting your winner and putting your money on. Note, some people choose to bet by trap number or colour rather than by the dog’s name but any of these are fine and acceptable. Once you have selected your pick, put your stake on with your bookie and hope for the best. If your dog wins, so you do you and if it doesn’t, you lose. Unless you have bet each way of course.

Multiples Bet

Multiply your winnings by selecting more than one pick and stack up your selections for greater returns. There are plenty of ways to do this such as betting on doubles, trebles and four folds, etc or even by placing your dogs in a combination or system bet such as a yankee, Canadian and/or a Heinz. These are all super fun and no way as complicated as they might first appear to be. Plus, the potential winnings are huge!

Forecast And Reverse Forecast Bet

For those that don’t know, forecasts are race bets that apply to dogs and horses where your bet nominates the first and second place finishers. It follows then, that a reverse forecast does exactly the same but covers you as a winner whichever order the pair finish in. This is something that straight forecast bet will not. Think of the reverse forecast as the each way equivalent of forecast betting. You lay down two stakes in order to cover both eventualities, just needing your chosen greyhounds to be the first two dogs over the line.

Tricast and Combination Tricast Bet

In greyhound betting, there are two types of tricast bets available to a bettor. Firstly, the straight tricast, often referred to as a trifecta. With a straight tricast, your three greyhounds must win in the order that they have been selected and displayed on the betting slip. Where, as with a combination tricast the same three selections can come home in any order. Maths wizards among you may have worked out that combination tricasts count as six forecasts bets, which is correct.

Greyhound Racing Legends

Of course, a sport that has been held for as long as greyhound racing will have its fair share of legendary names. Some of these we have listed below.

Dogs

Mick the Miller

Perhaps the most famous and iconic name in British dog racing, Mick the Miller was actually born in Ireland and destined to race in the US before a vicious tornado destroyed St. Louis, Missouri put an end to the deal. Instead, a catholic priest by the name of Father Martin Brophy entered him into the British racing circuit where he remained for three years. Overall, he won 51 of the 68 races that he entered with his main achievement being a 19-race winning streak that included two successive English Greyhound Derbies.

Patrcia's Hope

Patricia’s Hope was another iconic dog that oozed class and determination. In his first year alone, Pat won 8 out of 13 races and was the long odds winner of the 1972 Derby by four lengths, quite remarkable given the speed and distance in a dog race of this quality. This white and fawn champion successfully defended his crown a year later becoming, at the time, only the second dog in racing history to win the derby two times after Mick the Miller.

Ballyregan Bob Greyhound

Ballyregan Bob remains to this day one of the most successful dogs in the history of British racing, remembered for many accomplishments but mainly his incredible 32 race winning streak. Over his career, he raced a total of 48 times, only being beaten six times. Even in his farewell performance, he set a new world record before retiring to stud.

Rapid Ranger

Rapid Ranger became the third dog in racing history to win the English Greyhound Derby on more than one occasion when he took it for a second time in 2001. He was an Irish male brindle greyhound who actually lost his first two races before setting off on a remarkable career in which he would also attempt to win a third Derby race, and the immortality that would have given him but it wasn’t to be.

Scurlogue Champ

Back in his day, Scurlogue Champ was one of the most popular greyhound racers in the UK, who amassed a huge support all over the country. Not many dogs have the pleasure of having a football chant made in their honour, but such was Scurlogue Champ’s popularity, this was the case. It was par for the course to hear chants of ‘Scurrrrrlogue, Scurrrrrlogue, Scurrrrrlogue’ whenever he raced. Scurlogue Champ would later break 18 track records up and down the British Isles, chalking up 51 wins from 63 races.

Dog Racing Betting Main Events

Britain is the home of greyhound racing and as such the UK is the home of more prestigious events than anywhere else. We have listed some of these below but it is also worth noting that there are lots of other highly rated races in the UK such as the Golden Jacket which takes place at Crayford in South London each February, plus the Oaks, the Scurry Gold Cup, the Regency, the Essex Vase and the Romford Puppy Cup.

English Greyhound Derby

The gold standard of British dog racing, the English Greyhound Derby is by far and away the most prestigious greyhound racing event, some might say in the entire world and with good reason too. A summer event, this race normally goes off in June or July and was first run in 1927. Back then it was staged at White City stadium, before moving to Wimbledon followed by another move to Towcester but these days goes off at Nottingham after relocating in 2018 following Towcester’s closing.

Scottish Greyhound Derby

The Scottish Greyhound Derby dates back to 1928 and is held at the Shawfield Stadium in Rutherglen, South Lanarkshire, running in April each year. Greyhound Betting FAQs

For us, the best greyhound betting system is simply doing your research and placing smart bets using stats and sounds strategy. This is alongside choosing bookmakers with quality odds for the best value.
While betting on the traps closest to the inside track may yield a small advantage, except in the case of virtual greyhounds, it pales in comparison to the importance of the quality of the greyhound. Base your decisions on participants, not traps.
You win dog racing bets by correctly predicting the outcome of the race, your ability to do this successfully will be helped by proper research and strategy.
In the UK, the typical standard is for 6 dogs to line up in a race.
The greyhounds are distinguished by their coloured bibs which are relevant to the traps they start in.
Dogs coming out of trap one will be wearing red, trap two dogs were blue, trap three leavers wear white, orange bibs are for dogs in trap five, while dogs chasing the hare from trap 6 will be dressed in black and white.
