The BNP Paribas Open is an annual tennis tournament that takes place in Indian Wells, California early to mid-March. It can also be called the Indian Wells Open or the Indian Wells Masters. Since 1987, this tournament has been part of the Grand Prix Super Series, a set of nine tournaments that rank just below the four majors in importance.
This is a hardcourt tournament and the largest combined ATP (Men’s) World Tour and WTA (Women’s) tennis tournament in the world. It is normally one of the best-attended tennis tournaments outside the four Grand Slams, which are the only events that offer larger prize money. Indian Wells has the second-largest tennis stadium in the world after New York’s Flushing Meadows’ Arthur Ashe Stadium. Aside the Miami Open, this tournament is one of two tour events aside the majors that typically last longer than eight days.

Popular Tennis Bets for BNP Paribas Open – Indian Wells
There are a plethora of ways to bet on tennis, which helps keep this market fresh and exciting. Below we have listed a few examples, but these are by no means all of the ways that you can bet on tennis.
Outright Tournament Winner
An outright tournament winner bet is simply a bet on the winner of a tournament. Tennis is normally a seeded competition and draws are implemented accordingly to determine which players will face one another throughout the tournament. The handy thing about this is that bettors are able to look ahead at potential match-ups as soon as the tournament draw is released. This will help you select the players that you think might enjoy a deep run at a tournament. The third seed, for example, will not meet the tourney favourite until the semi-final, whereas seed number two won’t face the top player until the final, which is worth bearing in mind.
A match winner bet is the most popular form of tennis betting. This is a bet who will win a particular match in which a draw is not a possible outcome. Because of the nature of a tennis match, shock results are rare but do happen so, although the best player will usually win, form is important so pay attention to it. It is also worth noting the past results between the two players as some players, no matter how good they are, struggle against a certain playing style such as big, powerful serving players. Another factor that can determine the result of a match, or tournament for that matter, is the playing surface. Some players are practically unplayable on certain surfaces, think The King of Clay Rafa Nadal at the French Open. For note, grass is the fastest, less bouncy surface, while clay is the slowest with the hard court somewhere in the middle.
This is the tennis version of a correct score bet because in tennis you bet on the score in sets. Most games are a best of three sets affair, but in the majors and other premier events, the men will play best of five set matches. So, in a five set match, a player can win 3-0, 3-1 or 3-2 for example. Again, this is a good bet for players that start slowly or drop off slightly in the middle of a match or aren’t likely to drop a set at all. Either way, this can help build some value in a sport where favourites are generally low priced.
First Set Winner
This is a simple monetised prediction on which player of the two will win the first set of the match. There will be stats available that will help you make such a prediction so that you can be happy to back it up with money. Stats that would suggest whether or not certain players tend to start slowly or they take charge of the match and typically win the first set. Once you have concluded which of the two is the more likely to win the first set, you can place this uncomplicated wager in no time.
Tournament Structure for BNP Paribas Open – Indian Wells
The BNP Paribas Open is a knockout event which builds to two finals, one for women and the other for men, and includes the top 75 ranked singles players on the WTA and ATP Tours. This event offers the same prize money for men and women across singles and doubles competitions.
History of BNP Paribas Open – Indian Wells
The tournament began in 1974 in Tucson, Arizona and was originally an ATP fundraising event. Two years later the tournament was relocated to Mission Hills Country Club in the Coachella Valley, California where it remained for five years. The competition spent another half decade staged at the La Quinta hotel where it got bigger every year until it eventually and inevitably outgrew the tennis facilities there and needed to move again to a new tennis facility in nearby Indian Wells.
By 1987, a top women’s professional competition was held in conjunction with the men’s event, though prior to the men’s rather than concurrently. This changed in 1996 when they were scheduled to take place at the same time after the ATP and the WTA agreed to combine both events. The tournament continued to grow and by 2000 construction of the Indian Wells Tennis Garden was completed where it continued to grow in attendance. In 2009, the French bank BNP Paribas came on board as the sponsor of the event and remain so to this day.

With the largest gates and prize money outside of the four tennis majors – Wimbledon, US Open, Australian Open and French Open – the BNP Paribas Indian Wells Open is a really, really big deal. One of the few tournaments to offer the same prize money to players from both tours, this is a seriously popular event for the players too and always draws the biggest names, save for the William sisters for a time, in the game but who is likely to come out on top this time around?
