Popular Bets for the St Jude Invitational
Golf is one of the world’s number one sports for betting on; in fact, it is hard to think of another sport that naturally throws up as many betting opportunities.
Below, we have listed a few of the most popular bets for this tournament – however, you can check out our more detailed golf betting guide here.
Outright Bet
This is nothing more than a one stake bet on the player that you believe will win the tournament; in this case, the St Jude Invitational. Unless you are betting each way, in which case your player can finish among a predesignated number of places, then your selection must win the St Jude Invitational in order for you to collect your winnings. Anything less and your bet will be declared a loss and the bookie will keep your stake.
Three-Ball Betting
With three-ball betting, players are bracketed into groups of three and your bet centres on selecting which of the three will perform the best. For the purposes of this bet, you can forget all about the wider tourney, as your three-ball bet will apply to one round of golf and only to those three players alone. So long as your pick outperforms the other two in that group, your bet is a winner.
Winner’s Nationality
This is simply a bet on the nationality of the potential winner of the St Jude Invitational. So, if you think that the winner might come from South Korea, and there are five South Korean players taking part, then any one of those golfers can win in order for your bet to be paid as a winner.
PGA TOUR Player of The Year or Winner of The Jack Nicklaus Award
This is a season-long bet in which punters can predict the winner of the Jack Nicklaus Trophy, which is better known as the PGA Tour Player of the Year. This is awarded to the top performing player on the PGA Tour and open to betting on. If you place a bet at the start of the season before a ball has been driven without knowing player form at the time, it will pay out better.
Tournament Structure for the St Jude Invitational
As an invitational event, the WGC-FedEx St Jude Invitational has a reduced field in comparison to other events, and should start with about 75 players, roughly half the number for a standard professional golf event. Invitations are handed out to members of either Presidents Cup teams or Ryder Cup teams, depending on whatever event was played most recently.
These are joined by players ranked among the top 50 on the Official World Golf Ranking within one week or two weeks before the event tees off. Winners of global events that have taken place in the 12 months following the previous St Jude Invitational, and which have an Official World Golf Ranking Strength of Field Rating of 115 points or higher, are also invited to participate. Other invitees include the winner of one selected tournament from each of the PGA Tour of Australasia, the Sunshine Tour and the Asian Tour, as well as two selected tournaments from the Japan Golf Tour.
The tournament itself is a standard stroke play event that runs for four days in early July, starting on a Thursday and finishing on a Sunday. The winner is the player who has the highest below-par score after four days play, or the winner of a three-hole playoff which is triggered if the scores are deadlocked after 72 holes. There is no cut enforced at this event.
History of the WGC-FedEx St Jude Invitational
The event came to life in 1999 to replace the outgoing World Series of Golf. Until 2005, the WGC Invitational was sponsored by NEC who also put their name to the World Series. In 2006, the tournament changed sponsorship when tyre manufacturer Bridgestone took over as title sponsor.
In 2019, FedEx became the title sponsor and relocated the tournament to TPC Southwind in Memphis, Tennessee. Its original home was the South Course of Firestone Country Club in Ohio, where it had been held since its inception with the one exception of 2002, when the event was played at Sahalee Country Club in Sammamish, Washington.

ThePuntersPage Final Say
The first WGC event after golf’s major season, the WGC-FedEx St Jude Invitational is a literal showcase of top-quality golf at TPC Southwind. As an invitational event, the reduced fields here usually number around 75 players, who are all there on invitational merit thereby guaranteeing pedigree.
The tournament is organised by the International Federation of PGA Tours, and the prize money is made up from both the PGA Tour and the European Tours. The winner is awarded a Wedgwood trophy called The Gary Player Cup, of which Tiger Woods has won a record eight.
TPC Southwind is a par-70 course set 22 miles from Memphis that measures almost 7,250 yards and is rightly considered to be one of the toughest courses on the PGA Tour, with tight fairways that must be avoided at all costs. But, at the end of the day, these challenges only serve to make this event all the more exciting.
