The Canadian Open is an annual golf tournament on the PGA Tour, co-organised by Golf Canada and founded way back in 1904. Read on for all you need to know about this event, including our top Canadian Open tips and predictions, the latest odds, the most popular betting markets, and more!

Tournament Structure for the Canadian Open

As with all PGA Tour events, play starts on a Thursday and finishes on a Sunday. On each of the four days of play, the golfers involved are required to play through 18 holes, aggregating an under-par score in the process. If you are unfamiliar with the term “par”, check out our guide to golfing terms here.

After two days have been played, a cut is introduced to reduce the size of the field, with any players that fall underneath that line having to exit the tournament. Those that have a higher score and are above the line will have made the cut and carry on into the two days of the weekend.

By the end of play on Sunday, the player at the top of leaderboard is the golfer with the lowest complete tournament below-par score. This can sometimes end in more than one player finishing with the same score, in which case a playoff will be contested by the tied players in order to find a winner.

Popular Canadian Open Betting Markets

Betting on golf is as good as sports betting gets, due to the sheer amount of markets to be found. In addition, the size of the field means that you can get good value prices even on the world’s best players. There are many golf betting markets for an event such as this, and below we have highlighted some of the best available for the Canadian Open.

Outright Winner Betting

The outright winner allows you to bet on the golfer that you believe will emerge victorious after four days. Of course, this will be the player that finishes the tournament with the lowest below-par score. All you need to do is click on the odds next to the player you think will win. This will send you to your betting slip, where you can enter your stake and place your bet.

Top 10 Finish Betting

With this bet, you will be wagering on a golfer to do well – enough to finish in the top ten. While not an outright victory, this is still a very good achievement in golf because of the size of the field. Plus, golf does tend to offer the best value odds compared to other sports.

Best Canadian Open betting site for Top 10 Finish: Coral

Make or Miss the Cut Betting

In golf, a cut is used to slice the field in half after two days' play. It is not uncommon for lower-ranked golfers to make the cut, which would pay well due to the unexpected nature of the outcome. Likewise, it is also possible for one of the world’s top players to miss the cut, again at high odds.

In-Play Betting

If you’re live streaming an event through a betting app or watching live you will be watching the events unfold as they happen in real time. Because of the launch of in-play betting, or live betting as it is also called, you are able to respond to on-course events instantly and place your bets. This includes all of the above markets, but with bets placed while the event is underway rather than before.

History of the Canadian Open

  • The first Canadian Open championship was held back in 1904.
  • In 1912, American golfing legend Walter Hagen made his professional debut in this competition at the Rosedale Golf Club.
  • Two years later, the event saw its first home winner when Canadian Karl Keffer won the event.
  • The tournament saw its biggest ever winning margin in 1919, when J. Douglas Edgar from England won by 16 strokes.
  • The 1939 renewal was won by Harold “Jug” McSpaden at the Riverside Golf and Country Club of Saint John. This course is located in New Brunswick, and it was the only time the Open has been held in Atlantic Canada.
  • Years later, in 1955, Arnold Palmer captured his inaugural PGA Tour victory when he won the Canadian Open at the Weston Golf and Country Club.
  • In the 1962 event, Gary Player was disqualified only after the first round. Unfortunately, he incorrectly recorded the wrong score on the 10th hole.
  • For the first time in his professional career, Tiger Woods missed a professional cut, an unfortunate occurrence that came at the 1997 Canadian Open.
  • In 2007, Jim Furyk joined the likes of James Douglas Edgar, Jim Ferrier, Leo Diegel, and Sam Snead in winning consecutive Canadian Open titles.
  • Tiger Woods’ memorable Canadian Open win in 2000 meant that he became the second player in history after Lee Trevino to win golf’s Triple Crown, going on to win the Open Championship and US Open in the same year.
