Alfred Dunhill Links Championship Betting Tips & Predictions 2021

After the conclusion of the 2021 Ryder Cup, golf bettors’ attention turns towards the east coast of Scotland this week for the European Tour’s much loved pro am event, the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship. A decent field is expected to show up, all in the hunt for a slice of the cool $5 million prize fund. The tournament was cancelled 12 months ago because of Covid but makes a welcome return this year to its regular three distinguished Scottish links courses, the Old Course at St Andrews, Carnoustie and Kingsbarns.
Over the last 20 years golfers from the British Isles and Ireland have tended to dominate this event. 13 of the previous 19 renewals have been won by players from England, Ireland or Scotland, with three of the other six taken down by Scandinavian players. There is not much reason to think that might change this year although there are only three members of the defeated European Ryder Cup team – Shane Lowry, Tommy Fleetwood and Tyrell Hatton – registered to take part.
US Ryder Cup winner Tony Finau was going to be the highest ranked golfer in the field and has finished inside the top ten on each of the two occasions he has played this tourney in the past. The American has since withdrawn but his countryman and recent PGA Championship winner Billy Horschel remains in the field. However, the favourite according to the bookies is Irishman Shane Lowry. 2019 Open champion Lowry usually goes well on the links and has been playing well enough to threaten for the past six months now.
Tommy Fleetwood has twice been runner-up in this event and has a trio of top five finishes also, while Tyrrell Hatton has won this event on two prior occasions. There is plenty of reasons to bank on any of these but factoring in what the Ryder Cup and the subsequent transatlantic flight has left on them mentally suggests fresher options such as world number 18 Horschel and former world number 8 Alex Noren might also be a wise strategy. Noren has an ok record in the Dunhill and recently posted a couple of top ten finishes in the FedEx Cup play-offs.
Only on two occasions in the past 20 years has a player that took part in the Ryder Cup gone on to win this title. This year’s losing European Ryder Cup captain Padraig Harrington did so in 2002 while Germany’s Martin Kaymer did the same in 2010 but on both occasions the tourney was held in Europe. Other names to look out for include Branden Grace who won this event with a record score back in 2012 and has 14 titles to his name, while Kaymer, part of Harrington's backroom team at Whistling Straits, is seven years without a win now and looks closer than ever to ending that poor sequence.
