BMW PGA Championship Betting Tips & Predictions 2021
It's the second event of FedEx Cup Playoffs and penultimate tourney of the PGA season. It gets underway this Thursday at the Caves Valley Golf Club in Maryland. Yes, the BMW Championship swings back into life this week at its sixth home in as many years as the PGA Tour makes a stop in Baltimore for the first time since 1964.
The course here has been lengthened to over 7,500 yards which could provide some hope to the big hitters. In all, 69 of the leading 70 golfers in the FedEx Cup standings will be involved with the only absentee being Patrick Reed who has had to withdraw from the last two Tour events. Prices are a little shorter this week due to the tourney having a 70 player field limit leaving us with the top 22 players in the market all 35/1 or less. By Sunday afternoon, only 30 players will be left who will be able to progress on to the Tour Championship.
The previous PGA event, the Northern Trust Open, ended up finishing a day late following tropical storms in New York but was eventually won in the tie breaking playoff by Tony Finau, marking his second win on the Tour and first since 2016. Finau is now at the top of the FedEx Cup standings ahead of Jon Rahm and Australia’s Cameron Smith, who was the unlucky runner up in New York. Both finished -20 with the world's top player, Jon Rahm, back in third on -18. The Spanish star blew his chance when looking set to win but it was still another top 5 finish for the world number one, and he is the short-priced favourite to win in Maryland this week.
Could Tony Finau be in for another big week following his first win in five years? Yes, it is very possible so long as a day’s less rest between events hasn’t left him jaded and exhausted – particularly given that it went down to a playoff too. The same could be said for Mexico’s Abraham Ancer, who took down the WGC-St. Jude Invitational and is showing good form.
Patrick Cantlay hasn't finished outside the top 25 in six starts other than at Royal St George's where he missed the cut. Such consistency was further rewarded this week where he made a top 11 at The Northern Trust. The Maryland course should his game too, as he is in the top 25 for Driving Distance on the PGA Tour and enjoys this surface to put on. Cantlay also won the Memorial at Muirfield Village, a par 72 course such as the one he faces this week.
With the Northern Trust over running by 24 hours, perhaps it is worth looking at the players that were out of contention at the Liberty National on Monday. This list would include Patrick Cantlay as well as Xander Schauffele and Brooks Koepka plus Dustin Johnson and Collin Morikawa who both exited the Northern Trust on the Friday after missing the cut. World number two Johnson does boast a fantastic record in the FedEx Cup playoffs but has not been in great form of late, missing two of his last three cuts and you have to go all the way back to November for his last tournament win when he won the 2020 Masters at Augusta.
Finally, Louis Oosthuizen finished second at the US Open and the PGA Championship and also tied third at The Open Championship. Oosthuizen has now sat out the last two PGA Tour events so he should be fully recharged to take on this second of three FedEx Cup playoff events.

Popular BMW PGA Championship Betting Markets
Golf is one of the most popular of all the sports to bet on. There are a number of reasons for this, such as the size of the competing field which keeps the value high even on the favourites, as well as the sheer number of alternative bets that punters can place on the game. As for the BMW PGA Championship betting, there are a number of options – take a look at the following suggestions for some of the most popular bet types for this event.
Outright Winner Betting
There is nothing complicated about an outright winner bet. Here, you are simply placing a wager on the golfer that you think will win the event outright, and if they do, your bet gets paid as a winner. Another way to bet on player performance is to bet on who tops the leaderboard at the end of each day. In this scenario it doesn’t matter where your pick finishes overall, just that they are in the lead at the end of your nominated day.
Best BMW PGA Championship betting site for outright winner: bwin
Like an outright bet but with added “runner up insurance”, each way bets work in two ways (and stake twice) because half of your bet goes on your pick to win the event, and the other half depends on your pick sealing a finish among the places. How many places are paid depends on your bookmaker and whether or not they are running an extra place paid promotion. (Hint: they probably are, so be sure to check).

Two-ball betting works by bookmakers coupling up golfers for a round and you, the punter, betting on which of the two will shoot the better round. Two – or three – ball betting is great in the early rounds and works well in accumulators.

Make the Cut Betting
After two day’s play at a stroke play event such as the BMW PGA Championship, a cut is enforced to trim the field of competitors in half. For players, it is critical that they make the cut and continue participating in the final two days of competition but sometimes form and luck goes against them, and they miss out. Whether or not certain players make the cut can be bet on at most online bookmakers.

Tournament Structure for the BMW PGA Championship
The event is played on the par 72 West Course at the Wentworth Club in the English county of Surrey. The Wentworth Club actually hosted the precursor to the Ryder Cup in 1926 and has been the venue for many more famous championships. The West course was originally designed by Harry Colt in the early 1920s.
The tournament itself is a four-day, stroke play event with an enforced cut after two days' play. Stroke play is golf’s most common scoring system in which players scores are directly related to the amount of strokes they have taken over the tournament. The less amount of strokes, the better.
The event begins on a Thursday and concludes on the Sunday, when the player with the highest below-par score will be crowned the champion. In the event of a tie, a three-hole playoff will ensue in order to find a winner. The winners here receive automatic entry into that year’s US Open, as well as enjoying a three-year exemption for the Open Championship.
Points awarded in the PGA Championship will go toward the Race to Dubai leaderboard. The Race to Dubai competition lasts throughout the entire European Tour season and is a league table for players who have won points based on their performance over the season. The top 60 players qualify for the DP World Tour Championship which is the Race to Dubai climax. In 2021, the competition carried a purse worth €3,000,000.
History of the BMW PGA Championship
The BMW PGA Championship was founded in 1955 by the Professional Golfers’ Association (PGA), and was originally called the British PGA Championship. For the first 30 years of its existence, the championship was rotated around several of the UK’s most prominent courses before settling down on the West Course at Wentworth Club in 1984. The tourney has enjoyed a number of sponsors over the years, but from 2005 onwards has been under the BMW banner. The first ever winner was Ken Bousfield from England, who won at the Pannal Golf Club in the tournament’s inaugural year.
In 2020, the BMW PGA Championship, its 66th renewal, was originally supposed to be held 10–13 September. However, it was delayed by two months and was played from 8–11 October. For 2021, the Championship will return to its normal place in the European Tour calendar and will, all being well, have full crowds in attendance.
